Yes, you can have it all! Tension, chronic frustration
and a deep down belief that you are not performing
as well as you should. Type-E people are pushed
into action by a set of unrealistic expectations
about themselves and life. These expectations
create images of perfection, which become the
standards by which we measure ourselves. The
result of these standards is a stress level that
is so high, that minor upsets can trigger major
reaction. This creative learning experience for the
health professional will explore the characteristics
of Type-E behavior and investigate methods of
handling Type-E stress. Topics will include role
confusion, excellence anxiety, sabotage of our own
best interests and how the Type-E person impacts
healthcare delivery.
1. Define Type-E stress.
2. Identify components of excellence anxiety.
3. Define role confusion.
4. List five methods for managing Type-E stress
and the impact it has on healthcare delivery.
5. Understand process and impact orientation.

and women view success and failure and how
these views impact healthcare delivery.

Childhood and adolescent depression has
increased dramatically in the past fifty years. During
this time, the average age of onset has decreased.
Diagnosis of depression in children is not always
clear. Although depressed children suffer from
the same symptoms as depressed adults, they
express themselves differently. Parents often think
their child is going through a phase and because
of this, depression in children, is often overlooked
and untreated. Participants will increase their
understanding of the characteristics of depression
in children and what therapies are appropriate in
treating it.
1. List the common symptoms and behaviors
associated with depression in children and
adolescents.
2. Discuss the theories related to causes of
depression in children.
3. Discuss the various diagnoses related to

In cases of Domestic Violence, people often want
to know why this behavior happens. Anyone who
has been in a long term relationship realizes it is
not possible to live with an intimate partner day
in and day out without ever experiencing conflict
and anger. Why is it that some relationships
can experience this type of conflict and
navigate through in a non-violent way, and other
relationships escalate into violence? There is no
easy answer because the issues related to intimate
partners are so complex.
1. Discuss the prevalence and background information about domestic violence.
2. Identify current psychological models for domestic violence.
3. Explore the relationship between domestic violence, and power and control, as well as
learn about the types
and symptoms of domestic violence.
4. Discuss the behavioral indicators of domestic
violence, as well as characteristics of abusers,
victims & children
affected by domestic violence.
5. Explore the cycle of violence.
6. Assess family violence in terms of assessing
level of risk, documenting violence, handling a
disclosure of violence, and assisting the victim
in developing a safety plan.

Accurate and timely documentation is one of the
most important things any nurse can do. It is
often said, “If it wasn’t charted, it wasn’t done.”
Through documentation, you prove you provided
quality care and met nursing standards. It’s often
how your facility is reimbursed and how you can
get paid. Documentation is the tool we use to
communicate with other members of the healthcare
team so we can provide consistent, appropriate
care and protect both our patients and ourselves.
Nurses will gain knowledge and skills related to
the documentation of information in the patient’s
medical record.
1. Define documentation.
2. List at least five purposes of documentation.
3. List several established protocols for documentation.
4. List the types of documentation.

While stem cell research offers exciting possibilities
for treating and possibly curing such illnesses and
diseases such as Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s,
stroke, spinal cord injury, heart disease, and
diabetes, it also poses highly controversial debate,
originating primarily from the issue of how these
stem cells are obtained. The best source of stem
cells is human fetal tissue. Harvesting the stem
cells destroys the embryo, which many may see
as morally and ethically wrong. The purpose of
this study is to enhance the student’s knowledge
of the science, ethics and regulatory mechanisms
involved in stem cell research.
1. Discuss the potential benefits of stem cell based
therapies.
2. Explore the science of stem cell research.
3. Discuss terminology related to stem cell

Parkinson’s disease is one of the most common
degenerative diseases of the nervous system,
affecting approximately 1% of the population over
the age of 50. The disease pursues a slow but
progressive course for 15 to 20 years, culminating
in severe invalidism. Because there is no known
cure for Parkinson’s disease at this time, the aim
of treatment is to keep the patient comfortable and
functional for as long as possible. This home study
will explore the seven types of Parkinson’s disease
and the management of the disease.
1. Differentiate the 7 types of Parkinson’s disease.
2. Describe the clinical course of primary Parkinsonism.
3. Discuss the role of the various caregivers and
utilization of physical, speech and occupational
therapy in the management of Parkinson’s
disease.

Grief support is important for children largely
because the death of a significant person in
a child’s life can affect the child’s subsequent
development. Bereavement is a life crisis that
presents both an opportunity for growth and a
potential obstacle to completing developmental
tasks. Caring adults may help children and youth
move toward their pain, find safe and appropriate
ways to mourn, and assist them in adjusting to the
changes in their lives caused by their losses. Join
us for this self-study as we discuss understanding
