Call for Proposals for the Global STS-Design Network — due date of January 31, 2015 Join us for an exciting week of knowledge sharing and learning in the beautiful university town of Leuven. This will be an integrated learning journey featuring first research on Monday and Tuesday, then case studies on Wednesday, followed by the Global STS-Design Network session on Thursday and Friday that focuses on the underlying STS design theory and practice. The offerings of these days are being provided by three groups that are connecting for the first time … International Workshop on Teamwork (IWOT), European Workplace Innovation Network (EUWIN), and the Global STS-Design Network. Research -- September 7-8th IWOT addresses various aspects of teamwork in organizations and includes research from a variety of perspectives, disciplinary backgrounds and geographical areas. IWOT covers all aspects of team working but with particular view to the future of teamwork and virtual teams. This year the focus is on team working in health care. IWOT will soon be issuing their call for papers with a deadline for abstract submission of Friday May 8th. Case Studies -- September 9th EUWIN engages practitioner, researchers, and policy makers to gather expertise, share knowledge, and raise awareness regarding workplace innovation. EUWIN is a Europe-wide learning network, launched with the 1 specific objective of improving the performance of organizations and the quality of jobs on a truly sustainable basis. EUWIN is open to practitioners, social partners, policymakers, and others with an interest in the workplace. The EUWIN program will feature numerous cases drawn from their own network and keynote presentations from international thought leaders. This is a great opportunity to hear first-hand about current best practices in Europe. The Global STS-Design Network will be sponsoring one track on STS Design. During the last 60 years the theory and practice of designing organizations and workplaces from a Sociotechnical perspective has evolved and broadened. This 6-hour workshop will offer an overview of the major streams of practice, including but not limited to, “Classical North American STS-Design” (both the routine and non-routine work applications), the Emery Participative Design Workshop approach, the Lowlands-De Sitter based STS-Design approach and the currently evolving approach to the design of networks and ecosystems. The workshop is intended for those new to STS Design as well as those interested in the history of the last 60 years. STS Design Concepts, Tools and Practices – September 10-11th Global STS-Design Network - STS Roundtable (North America), Ulbo de Sitter Institute (Lowlands), STS Australia, and hopefully others - is a global network of business leaders, researchers, trade unionists, academics, managers, practitioners, and students who share the values, principles and practices of socio-technical systems theory and a common interest in developing more humane and innovative organizations. The session is being jointly designed by the STS Roundtable with our colleagues from Europe and will include keynote presentations, 90-minute workshops, site visits, Pecha Kucha presentations, star European cases in health care and manufacturing, and an Innovation Gallery (interactive poster sessions). Following is an overview of the week’s learning journey and the Network session activities. 2 OVERVIEW OF THE GLOBAL STS-DESIGN NETWORK SESSION IN LEUVEN, SEPTEMBER 2015 Designing Healthy, Innovative Organizations and Workplaces: STS-DESIGN CONCEPTS, TOOLS AND PRACTICE Monday & Tuesday September 7-8, 2015 Wednesday September 9, 2015 Thursday September 10, 2015 STS Design Concepts, Tools and Practices Case Studies Research EUWIN SESSION (under design) AM IWOT (under design) One track – STS-Design History & Introduction PM EVE Networking Session (to bridge EUWIN & Global STS Design Network participants) Welcome & Introduction to the Network Session Learning Journey from first 3 days What’s happening in the World? Wrapup and reflections on the week Bridge to 2016 Walking Dinner through Leuven looking at the intersection of work and art Gala diner We invite you to submit your ideas and proposals for the 90-minute workshops, Pecha Kucha presentations, and the Innovation Gallery. There will be two sessions in the program for the 4 concurrent 90-minute workshops – one set on Thursday morning and the other on Friday afternoon. We are looking for highly interactive sessions -- cases or new tools/models/approaches -- that require a bit more time to share with your colleagues. The focus of the concurrent sessions will be the four themes initiated in Montreal: STS Network Design STS Workplace and Organizational Design STS Design and Stakeholder Voice STS Design and (ICT) Information Communication Technologies 3 PechaKucha sessions are informal and fun gatherings where creative people get together and share ideas in the PechaKucha 20 x 20 format. The 20 x 20 format is simply a presentation format where you show 20 images each for no longer than 20 seconds. The images advance automatically and you talk along to the image. Like the classic elevator pitch, 20 seconds x 20 images, is a bit longer but the idea is the same: short, concise, fast paced presentations. The Innovation Gallery (an interactive poster session) venue is a unique opportunity to engage with your colleagues in a more informal and interactive fashion regarding a case or a project, a new tool or approach - in general the work you are doing. There will be several rounds during which there will be brief 4-5 minute presentations followed by 10 minutes of Q&A and discussion. The proposals do not need to be very lengthy or elaborate. All we need is your title, the format you prefer (Pecha Kucha, 90-minute workshop, or Innovation Gallery), a brief description, and the relevance of your workshop/presentation/interactive poster. The due date for proposals is January 31, 2015. The Proposal Review Team is composed of Doug Austrom, Geert Van Hootegem and Pierre Van Amelsvoort. Deadlines: January 31, 2015 Submission date for completed proposal for workshop, Pecha Kucha or Interactive Poster Session Early spring Notification of acceptance for presentation at the conference For North America and Australia, please send proposals (and any questions) to Doug Austrom [email protected] <mailto:[email protected]> .
