Coach of the Year Eric Houle is in
his 22nd season as head track and
field and cross country coach at
Southern Utah University. Since his
arrival at SUU in 1992, the Thunderbirds have won 38 conference
championships, including seven
Summit League titles, 31 MidCon titles combined in track and
cross country, an American West
title and one NCAA Mountain
Regional cross country championship.
In addition, Houle has coached 577 all-conference athletes,
217 individual conference champions, 1 Big Sky most outstanding performer, 33 conference athletes of the year, 28
conference newcomers of the year, 35 NCAA national qualifiers, 118 NCAA West regional qualifiers and five NCAA
All-Americans, including Cameron Levins, who picked up the
title in track and in cross country.
Houle was inducted into the Utah Summer Games Hall of
Honor in 2004 and Southern Utah’s Coaching Factory Hall
of Fame in 2012, in recognition of his career coaching accomplishments.
SUU TRACK AND FIELD TRADITION AT
UW INVITATIONAL CONTINUES
CEDAR CITY, Utah - Jan. 29 - Southern Utah University indoor track and field will
split to two different meets this weekend. The distance team will travel to Seattle,
Wash. to compete at the UW Invitational. The UW invitational holds history with
SUU where former athlete and olympian, Cam Levins, set two meet records and the
fastest 3000-meter time in the world. The meet in Seattle will feature the top distance
athletes from SUU who met the qualifying standard marks to race. The rest of the
team will compete another weekend in Northern Arizona.
“We pick the right meets, for the right athletes, at the right time,” head coach, Eric
Houle, said. “We came to Washington because this is where the best distance runners are. If we don’t hit these kinds of meets we miss a golden opportunity. We take
the sprinters to the south because that is where they will get the best marks.”
The UW Invitational will feature six women from SUU. Ashley Hawks will compete
in the mile and 3000-meter after racing to a first place finish in the 3k two weeks
ago at the NAU Night Duals. Freshman, Ashley Tyndall and Angie Nickerson, will
also compete in the mile and 3000-meter. Mid distance athletes, Aubrey Bryson and
Paige Cardiff, will race in the 800-meter while Jasmyn Hildebrandt will race in her
first 5000-meter run this season.
On the men’s side, Liam Kennell, Shinano Miyazawa, Istvan Szogi, and Mike Tate
will all compete in the mile. Mike Tate comes back to action after a first place, and
conference qualifying time in the 800-meter run two weeks ago at NAU. Last year’s
Big Sky 800-meter champion, Eric Sandall, will race in the 800-meter run after a #2
all-time SUU record and conference qualifying time last week in the 800. Freshman,
George Espino, will also compete in the 800-meter. Nate Jewkes, Skylar Riggs, and
Hayden Hawks will all compete in the 3000-meter run.
“Washington is a good tradition for our school and people are aware of Southern
Utah when we come here,” Houle continued. “This is a tradition that our athletes
enjoy and are ready to live up to the standard that has been set.”
Arnold Carrillo comes back to action this week at NAU after a huge performance
two weeks ago in the 400-meter dash where he set a #2 SUU all-time record and Big
Sky Conference qualifying mark. He will compete in the 400-meter and the 4x400meter relay. Sprinters, Myra Franco, Hayley Harris, Jamila Pullum, and Andrea
Martinez are set to race in three events each this weekend including the 4x400-meter
relay. Multi athletes, Alex Anderson and Stephen Wilson return to action this week
after setting conference qualifying marks previously in the season.
The UW Invitational is scheduled for two days starting on Friday, Jan 30 with the
men’s and women’s 5000-meter at 6:20 pm at the University of Washington. The
meet will continue on Saturday starting at 9:45 am. The NAU Mountain T Invitational
is scheduled to begin on Saturday at 8 am at the Walkup Skydome in Flagstaff, Ariz.
T-BIRDS RACE TO BIG PERFOMANCES AT NAU
FLAGSTAFF, Arizona - Jan. 16 - The indoor track and field season continued this
weekend as the Thunderbirds competed at the Friday Night Duals at Northern
Arizona University. Three men hit the Big Sky Championships qualifying mark in
their individual events. Arnold Carrillo set the stage with a huge performance in
the 400-meter. His time, 47.65*, marks the second fastest 400-meter ever run in
SUU school history. Mike Tate qualified for conference with seconds to spare in the
800-meter run with a time of 1:52.23*. Jumper, Alex Anderson, also qualified for his
place in the championship in the triple jump with his mark of 14.03m (46-00.50).
