Professional Studies
Programmes:
At Cronton Sixth Form we are committed to ensuring
that all students realise their academic potential. We
also recognise that our students set their ambitions
high and must be equipped to compete within the
most prestigious professions.
Progression to prestigious universities is becoming
increasingly competitive and entry into the top
professions demand that students can demonstrate
high level employability skills.
To ensure that our students can realise their dreams
we have a unique programme of study which will
equip them to compete with the very best and prepare
them to be true professionals.
Our professional studies programme focuses on three
highly competitive career pathways:
● Tomorrow’s Doctors
● Tomorrow’s Lawyers
● Tomorrow’s Teachers
These individually designed programmes have been
developed by specialists in their professional fields
with extensive experience of supporting students in
their career development.
How does it work?
The professional studies programme is delivered
in addition to your A Level subjects and will form
part of your timetable, providing over four hours of
targeted specialised activity. In some cases additional
qualifications will be achieved, and some of this
time will be spent on work placements or entering
national competitions.
You do not need to put the professional studies
programme on your initial application form, but if
you would like to be part of one of the programmes
you will need to discuss this at your admissions
interview. The admissions tutors will work with you
to make the right A Level subject choices to access
university degrees in these professional areas and
make sure that the professional studies programme
is right for you.
Students completing a professional studies pathway
will be stretched and challenged academically to
ensure that they achieve the very best results whilst
developing essential professional skills which will set
them apart at university and in future employment.

A Levels are changing:
What does it mean for you?
Subjects content is being
changed over two years does this mean some of my
subjects will be new and
some will not?
It is likely that you will be studying a mixture of
‘old’ and ‘new’ subjects in September 2015.
Changes are being made nationally to A level qualifications and the way
they are studied and examined. At Cronton students will still choose four
AS subjects to study in their first year, and then decide which three to
take on into their second year.
The first subjects to change are Biology, Chemistry,
Physics, English (Language, Literature and
Combined), Art & Design, Business, Computer
Science, Economics, History, Sociology and
Psychology with others following over the next two
years.
What are the main changes?
Course content will change. 13 subjects will
change in 2015, and by 2017 all of the A level
subjects will have changed.
Will this mixture mean
changes to the way I study?
The amount of assessment completed via
coursework will be reduced in some subjects
or removed completely.
You will continue to take 4 subjects in the first year
of study and whether a subject is ‘old’ or ‘new’ you
will still sit AS exams.
●
●
Students will now sit all exams at the end of the
2 year course. Resits will no longer be available.
The AS qualification which students sit exams
for at the end of the first year will still be part
of the programme, but the grade achieved will
not count towards the students final A level
grade in that subject. However, the AS grade in
the fourth subject will still carry UCAS points
which will support entry to university.
●
●
You will then choose your 3 strongest subjects
to continue into the second year. This approach
means that you will have more choice and ensures
that you have the greatest opportunity to gain 3 full
A levels at the best grade possible.
There is little practical change to the way students
have studied A level courses over the last decade.
However course content will be different and there
will be no resits available as there were previously.
Studying 4 subjects is almost like having insurance,
in that if one subject emerges as your weakest, you
can take your strongest three and move into your
second year with the strongest profile possible.
The AS qualification that students do not take on
to their second year will still carry UCAS points
which can be added to their A Level UCAS points to
support their entry to University.
How are tutors at Cronton
getting ready for the
new course content and
examinations?
The majority of our tutors are also A level
examiners and as such will be trained in marking
the new qualifications, and will therefore know
how best to gain the highest marks.
A level staff have been involved in awarding body
training and consultation events and have played
an active part in contributing to the reforms so
that they are right at the forefront of responding
effectively to these changes.
If you have any questions, come
along to one of our Open Events
or ask out Admissions Tutors at
your interview.
Why take 4 subjects in
the first year?
Some Colleges will be offering an A level
programme which requires students to undertake
3 subjects in the first year. This approach can carry
risk in that if you decide you don’t like a particular
subject, it isn’t what you expected or there is one
subject where your performance isn’t strong then
you cannot discontinue it without falling below
having 3 full A levels.
