FREE! 015 UARY 2 R B E F CORK B7 2 whazon.com “Love is in the air…” Can you feel the love tonight? It's written in the starlight, it's everywhere you look around, everywhere you go, Actually, this is easy. I could simply cobble together soppy love song tosh and pass it off as a piece about the luvviest month ever in the whole wide year. The thing writes itself. But I'm not going to do that. That would be pretty cynical. Afterall what is Valentine's Day with all its pink teddy bears, shiny heart-shaped helium balloons, and oversized novelty cards if not a sincere, beautiful, unaffected old world celebration of love. No, it would be a cheap shot to have a go at it. I'm above that. And anyway, I'm not sure it's entirely fair that 'love' can be singly associated with just one date on the calendar. Surely 'love' is for those who love, a 365 kind of proposition (with one day off for bitter recrimination on Leap Years). Surely 'love' is, to borrow from horticulture, perennial. It keeps coming back. It may have its time in the sun, get burned, seem to die back. But come spring, maybe around Valentine's Day it begins to grow again. To quote Michaleen Flynn in The Quiet Man 'Impetuous! Homeric!'. Some of our good friends will be putting on special days and evenings so that you may have an opportunity to romance your completely better half (let's face it!), so check inside to see if anything tickles your fancy. Down on bended knee is entirely optional but see how you go…you never know. The champagne may weaken her resolve, Sean! February for us is really the month where things start kicking off again. And this month is no exception. We're off to a flying start! Our listings are packed with stuff. The Everyman has an awesome opera coming in Faust (who doesn't love opera?), and a new festival arrives on our block – the Quarter Block Party. Give it the respect it needs and deserves. And some early notice for the Forte Music Festival and le Cork French Film Festival in March. Formidable! Entrez, s'il vous plaît. I'll leave the last few words on love to the irrepressible Michaleen 'Have the good manners not to hit the man until he's your husband and entitled to hit you back.'* Ed. *WhazOn does not endorse the use of violence within the marital home.
