welcome
To a brand new edition of Translink Expresslines
Welcome to our new look Winter Edition of
Expresslines. Since joining the Marketing
Department in July my feet simply have hit the
ground running. There have been many exciting
projects to work on and I have had a great time
finding out about so many interesting people
that work for the company.
I started on my quest for inspiration and
was amazed to see how many issues of
Expresslines have already preceeded... a count of 67 since
Translink formed.
67 is particularly significant to me as it’s the year I was born.
There were many interesting highlights in 1967; the Rolling Stone
Magazine was published in 1967 and even the QE2 first took to
the waves. The most relevant fact I found was that our very own
Ulsterbus Tours began in 1967. It seems fitting we are offering a
fabulous weekend for 2 in the West Coast of Ireland as our prize
in this edition. (see page 35 on how to enter)
In this issue we welcome our new Group Chief Executive David
Strahan and you can read his message on page 5.
Sport and in particular Golf continues to provide a major opportunity for
shared experiences and we feature our very own inaugural championship
'The Translink Cup'. Our Inspectors vs the Drivers hoping for some
'McILroy Magic' from his home turf at Holywood Golf Club.
(see pages 26 & 27)
Special mention to media veteran and railway fanatic Robin Morton
on his coverage of Noel Playfair's life on board the The Great Merlin
85 and is a great read for all our rail enthusiasts who love all things
Steam! (pages 23 & 25)
It never ceases to amaze me people's generosity. Employees across
the company came together to take part in the Macmillan World's
Biggest Coffee Morning and have raised to date in excess of £15,000.
(see pages 28 & 29)
Seven of our colleagues have sadly passed away this year and we
extend our sincere sympathy to their families and friends.
We would like to get better at what we do and that the most effective
way to do that is share our best ideas, tools and practices to make
Expresslines the best staff magazine it can be. If you want to become
part of the features team to expand Expresslines, please email me at:

WELCOME
DAVID STRAHAN
Group Chief Executive
We’d like to give a warm welcome
to our new Group Chief Executive,
David Strahan. He took up post
on the 27th October and since
then has taken time to visit many
departments of the organisation,
meeting many of our staff who
deliver front line services.
David said “Since joining Translink I have been very
impressed by the professionalism of all our staff and the
commitment to giving our customers a great service. We
each play a vital part in ensuring we continue to grow
passenger numbers and deliver bus and rail services to the
highest standard.”
David acknowledges he is joining Translink at a time of
challenge; in his Group Chief Executive Weekly Update he
commented “You will all have heard the Minister’s recent
announcement concerning the future funding challenges
we face. This is a reflection of the significant pressures
on public finances and in no way reflects how well the
company has been performing.
The proposed cuts in funding have not been finalised and
are out for public consultation. Irrespective of the outcome
of this consultation, by continuing to be a successful
and growing business we will be best placed to meet the
challenges that lie ahead.
Meantime, as we are approaching a busy holiday period –
thank you to everyone who will be working over the next
few weeks providing services to our customers. To all of
you, it remains for me to say stay safe, drive with care and
to wish you and your loved ones a Happy Christmas and
peaceful New Year."

A word of thanks and praise to staff in Central Station and
on Enterprise for help from customer with 'particular needs'.
S B, Twitter
Our school is possibly your best customer with around
12 Translink buses which leave our school each day.
The service we get is exemplary, bus drivers who are
courteous, respectful and very professional and great
back up service from Gerry D’Arcy who is our schools
link person.
We are only too happy to be involved with Translink
in particular the Ulsterbus drivers at Besbrook. yLink
is an imaginative initiative and our pupils will benefit
greatly from it. Finally, sincere thanks for allowing us
to be the first school to sign up. We always love being
one step ahead!

ABOVE> Inspector Brendan Kelleher and Driver Dee McEvoy
Our very own Superheroes Metro driver Dee McEvoy and Inspector
Brendan Kelleher were fast off the mark to assist an elderly lady who
was the victim of a robbery. Their swift robust approach restrained
the perpetrator, holding him until the police arrived and saw the bag
returned to it's rightful owner.
My friend and I were passengers on a recent 261 service
from Enniskillen to Belfast. Shortly after this bus left
Dungannon my friend became ill. The driver of this service
was extremely caring and sympathetic and the way in
which this driver chose to deal with this situation made her
feel a lot more at ease. (Driver Raymond Ross, Ulsterbus
Dungannon).
The lady closed the conversation to Translink Customer
Service by saying “the driver was really brilliant and a
credit to himself and to Translink”.
Would just like to say that I think N I Railways staff are
all salt of the earth! I travel every day during the week on
the Belfast-Londonderry/Portrush line and every day each
conductor is very friendly and helpful.
A N, Facebook
In other rather more unusual news, I’d like to thank
good Samaritan Brian Coates from Ulsterbus
Newtownards for doing me a good turn this week...
On Monday I rather foolishly left my Kindle on the No.5
bus leaving it to do laps of Belfast while I recorded the
Social Club podcast. I only noticed its disappearance
on Tuesday morning when I boarded my morning bus.
Realising my error, I assumed that my Kindle was gone
for good.
Thankfully, bus station cleaner Brian Coates saved
the day. He not only rescued my Kindle but trawled
through my device to find my details, so could contact
me via Facebook to inform me that my e-reader was
waiting for me at Newtownards Bus Station. Thanks to
Brian for renewing my faith in mankind.
Stephen Logan, Sports Reporter

On behalf of Carnalea care home I would like to thank
your staff for the great service. In particular Fergal
McCloskey and Peter McCuaig. Both gentlemen were
more than helpful in their role as driver and assistant.
Our residents annual trip was booked through Strand
depot for Mossley Mill Museum, but on arriving it
was clear that this wasn’t suitable for some of our
residents. Your staff Fergal and Peter came back for
us and took us to a shopping centre turning a bad
day into a very enjoyable one. Both men were very
assuring, friendly and patient with all our residents.
Carnalea Care Home
I just wanted to drop a quick line in regarding the Ulsterbus
service which brings me to and from Moneyreagh to Belfast
every day for work. I would like to make you aware that
the drivers that work on this route are brilliant. They are
courteous, friendly, helpful and I cannot rate them highly
enough.
The service is excellent, it always runs on time in the
morning and is so dependable. People generally use these
forums to complain, so I thought I would do the opposite and
commend the drivers of this service and I hope you are able
to pass my thanks on to them.

Yesterday, my wife and I got on the 4A bus at the Knock
road stop on the Upper Newtownards Road around 9.40am.
This was the first time we have used the bus, and as the
lady driver said, "we were learners!" I would just like to
thank her for such great service, she was a real gem, and
explained where and when we would get our return bus.
A great mode of transport, great service with great staff.
Well Done, we will be back.

ENTERPRISE TRAIN REFURBISHMENT
ENTERPRISE
REFURBISHMENT
Major overhaul
work is well
underway
at York Road
Workshops
in Belfast to
refurbish and
modernise our
Enterprise rail
services. This
refurbishment
work will
transform the
cross-border
travelling
experience for
our customers.
First introduced in 1997, the Enterprise service offers a premium cross-border rail link
between Belfast and Dublin, after 17 years in service, the trains have now reached their
mid-life refurbishment requirement. This has presented an excellent opportunity to bring the
vehicles up to modern day standards, indeed, once this project is completed, the service will
look and feel like a brand new train. Translink N I Railways are leading this exciting £12.2
million project which is financed through the European Union’s INTERREG IVA Programme,
managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB), with support from the Department
for Regional Development.
The work involves a significant overhaul to the train’s mechanical systems, new look
interiors, new style seating with at-seat power sockets, new internal and external livery,
replacement passenger information systems, a new electronic passenger reservation system
and installation of CCTV. As this involves major work, trains have to come out of passenger
service and are being completed on a rolling programme basis in order to minimise overall
disruption for our passengers. We are working closely with our Irish Rail partners on this
Project. Some of you may have already seen the Irish Rail ‘Rotem’ train which recently
substituted one of our Enterprise trains and is now operating some of our cross-border
services. This has allowed us to maintain overall frequency and journey time for passengers.
Also, our Irish Rail colleagues are carrying out the major engineering works to the
Enterprise Locomotives as part of the project. With two Enterprise trains currently in York
Road Workshops, our Engineers and Technicians are busy stripping out the interiors ready
for refit, repairing and repainting the exteriors dealing with any flaking or damaged paint as
well as replacing all the on-board electronic systems. Each train will take around four to five
months to complete from start to finish.
In addition to these works, an Aesthetics Design Team made up of Translink and Irish Rail
representatives from Marketing, Rail Operations and Engineering as well as Interfleet,
(interior design advisors), have been developing a new innovative image and style for the
Enterprise brand. This has included refreshing the overall branding and livery, internal
colour schemes for both First Plus and Enterprise Class as well reviewing the style and
comfort of the seating, tables, lighting and other internal fixtures and fittings. The catering
car is also being refurbished to reflect the modern style and image and will also see the
installation of 15 seats and tables for more comfortable dining. All these enhancements
will create visual changes for the customer and will create a real ‘wow’ factor that will help
to enhance the overall perception of comfort and quality, provide a warm and welcoming
environment as well as an ambience of sophistication and contemporary style to attract
more people to use the service. To continue this new brand image, we also plan to have new
uniforms for our on-board employees and catering staff which will reflect the fresh new
colour schemes.
We are very much looking forward to seeing the first finished train next year when the hard
work and commitment of all involved will be revealed. All four of the Enterprise trains will
be completed by the end of next year.

PARK & RIDE
520 SPACE
PARK & RIDE
FOR DUNDONALD
Commuters travelling into Belfast from
Dundonald, Newtownards and the
surrounding areas will be able to use a
new Park & Ride facility.
PAGE 10
Translink celebrated the official opening of
the new 520 space Park & Ride facility at
Dundonald on the 1st December.
The new Park & Ride site will be operated
by a new dedicated, limited stop Metro
4X service during peak hours and by
Ulsterbus service 5, 5D, 5F, 7A, 9 and 10,
throughout the day, providing a 15 minute
frequency to and from the City Centre
during peak periods. Customers can park
free of charge and travel from just £2.80
per day with a Smartlink card.
Metro 4X will be operated by new Euro6
double deck vehicles, which have a striking
bespoke livery to help generate awareness
of the new facility and service.
Passengers can also avail of Metro 4A
and 4B services which operate every 10
minutes from Upper Newtownards Road
during peak times.
David Strahan, Group Chief Executive said,
“The opening of the new Park & Ride will
benefit thousands of commuters travelling
into the city. The popularity of Park &
Ride across Northern Ireland continues to
go from strength to strength. This latest
facility gives customers even better travel
choices; so we are looking forward to
welcoming more new people on board to
enjoy hassle free journeys with more time
to relax."
PAGE 11
PARK & RIDE
The new Park and Ride was officially opened
by Transport Minister Danny Kennedy who commented:
"There is a significant and growing
demand for Park & Ride facilities which
highlights the success brought about by
my Departments investment in public
transport in recent years, success that I
would intend to continue to build upon."
Dundonald Park & Ride will form a key part of the new Belfast
Rapid Transit system; initially three Belfast Rapid Transit routes are
planned to link Dundonald in East Belfast, the proposed Colin Town
Centre in West Belfast and the Titanic Quarter via the City Centre.
David Strahan, Danny Kennedy MLA
The Minister added: "Belfast Rapid Transit is an innovative and
ambitious project that will create a modern and dynamic public
transport system for Belfast, one that will provide people with
better access to jobs, hospitals, shops, schools, colleges, leisure and
entertainment facilities.” BRT services are expected to start in the
Autumn of 2017.

Eco-Schools Manager, Carmel Fyfe said "We’re looking forward to
working with local schools to tackle the school run congestion and
help make life better for more families across Northern Ireland. Thanks
to the on-going support from Translink we are seeing more and more
pupils getting involved in the Travel Challenge each year and choosing
sustainable forms of transport for the school run from walking and
cycling to scooting and taking public transport. Less cars on the road
is also helping to reduce carbon emissions which is better for the
environment too.”

Eco-Schools launch challenge for
HEALTHIER AND
HAPPIER SCHOOL RUN
Translink has teamed up with the international Eco-Schools programme
to launch a sustainable travel challenge that will cut down car
congestion around local schools and boost the health and happiness of
participants. The two-week travel challenge targeting Key Stage 1 – 3
pupils encourages more sustainable forms of travel including walking,
cycling, bus and train. Recent independent research reveals people
who use sustainable transport for the journey to and from work have
a significantly lower BMI and are happier than those who opt to use
private transport. It’s hoped that parents and pupils will also embrace
these benefits and leave the car at home.
Launching the initiative, Communications Manager, Lynda Shannon said "It
will be a good opportunity to introduce young people to a more sustainable
lifestyle and inform them about the environmental, safety, health and
cost benefits of more active forms of travel. We want to encourage pupils
from a young age to adopt good travel habits that stay with them as they
grow up and become the next generation of commuters travelling to work.
Although the challenge lasts a fortnight we hope that many participants
will opt to continue using sustainable transport."

Monkstown residents warned
OF ANTI-SOCIAL
BEHAVIOUR ON
TRACKS
Following several recent incidents of
antisocial behaviour near the railway tracks
at Monkstown, Translink N I Railways, PSNI
and the Policing and Community Safety
Partnership at Newtownabbey Borough
Council are advising residents in the
Brambles and Oaklands developments of
the risks associated with trespassing on the
railway network.
“We’re aware of incidents of trespass on
railway property at Monsktown by young
people from this area," commented Keith
Pollock, Level Crossing Safety Coordinator
with Translink. He adds “we’ve found
evidence of anti-social behaviour including
drugs and alcohol use on the tracks”.
We have just delivered information
leaflets to around 500 homes in the area,
reminding residents of the risks associated
with trespassing on the railway tracks.
Keith goes on to say, “the safety of our
employees, passengers and local residents
is N I Railways’ top priority, but if the risk
of serious injury or even death isn’t enough
to deter, we are highlighting the fact that
Translink will prosecute trespassers, leading
to a fine of up to £1000 and/or a criminal
record.”
Newtownabbey and Carrickfergus PSNI
Area Commander Chief Inspector Stephen
Reid said, “The PSNI wants to keep people
safe. The dangers around railway lines are
obvious, however young people seem to be
oblivious to this and they must take heed of
our warnings. The risk of injury and death
through misbehaviour in an area where
high speed trains operate is extremely high
and the use of drugs and alcohol adds to
that risk."

50 YEARS SERVICE
50
YEARS
UNBROKEN
SERVICE
WITHOUT
A DAY OFF!
Sometimes in life you get the pleasure to meet one of life’s unsung heroes. I certainly had one of those
moments when I travelled to Ballymena to meet Willis McWilliams. 50 years working in the same job,
never had a sick day and never travelled out of Ballymena I was a little intrigued. We had a fun time
as his colleagues, management and friends gathered for a surprise reception to officially mark his
unbroken service to the company. He was proud as punch and clearly excited that for one day everyone
was celebrating him. I found him most unassuming, quiet and genuine. “A true gentleman” said Ciaran
McHugh, SDM Ballymena who in fact organised the reception, “He will be missed but we wish Willis
well in his retirement."
PAGE 16
Willis even had a resounding mention in the Chief Executive's weekly update
"William ‘Willis’ McWilliams is an Ulsterbus Clerical Officer based in
Ballymena Bus Station. This month Willis celebrates 50 years working
for the company and has never had one day of sick leave which is
truly remarkable! Ask any of his colleagues in Ballymena and they
will speak of Willis’ loyalty and the fantastic job he does day in, day
out. Willis is retiring from Translink at the end of the month and I
would like to once again thank him for his longstanding commitment
to the business – a real inspiration!”
Gordon Milligan, Interim Group Chief Executive
What does your current job involve?
All jobs relating to the Booking Office –
dealing with Drivers and their pay-ins,
railway staff and their pay-ins, lodgement

and might even go to Coleraine by train if

to my current Clerical position in 1968 where
I remained until I retired this year on 30th
September 2014.
If you won the lottery, where would you like

do it – will probably live my life out happily
in Queen Street Ballymena.
What special qualities do you need for
your job?
Patience, patience and more patience.
What aspects of your job do you enjoy most?
Dealing with the drivers, their daily pay-ins
and any problems they may encounter with
their ticketing machines. There is always a lot
of laughs and definitely a lot of banter!
What do you find most challenging about
your job?
Not having the time to deal with everything.
The public have less patience now when
dealing with their complaints or lost property
enquiries. Everyone expects you to jump to
their attention, which is not always possible
as you are doing other jobs.
Who do you report to?
Karen Hoey the Chief Clerk and Ciaran
McHugh, SDM Ballymena.
What colleagues within the company do you
have contact with through your job?
The staff connected to the Bus and Railway
Stations within the North Eastern Area and
also Parcels, Cross Channel, Ulsterbus Tours
and Treasury Department.
What do you like to do in your free time?
Walk the dog and meet with friends.
Where has your favourite holiday destination
been?
I have never been out of the Country although
now that I have more time I may travel. I am
looking forward to travelling by Bus to Belfast
What car would you love to have money
no object?
I love to drive but am happy with my
automatic Volkswagon Passat.
If you had to change career, what would you
like to be?
My career days are over now - although
maybe it would have been nice to have been
an astronaut!
Do you remember your first day?
Yes, it seems a long time ago and the
Ballymena bus building was where the
railway building is now. I was met by Bobby
Doran who was Chief Clerk at that time.
Eleanor Ramsey, Sam King, Norman Kenny
and Sam McCrea were in the Booking Office.
Everyone was very friendly and Jack Roaan
showed me the ropes.
What are the biggest changes you’ve seen
over the years?
There are no members of staff in Ballymena
that were here when I started, although there
are a few colleagues with over 30 year service.
What has been your most memorable
moment or moments during your career?
The friends and colleagues at Ballymena have
been brilliant over the last few months. They
had a 65th birthday celebration for me and
we celebrated 50 years in the Company on
the 1st September with Gordon Milligan and
Ciaran Doherty in attendance with tea, cake
and buns with members of the public on my
final day Tuesday 30th September 2014. They
arranged a retirement meal for me on Saturday
4th October and I also had an invitation to the
Mayor’s Parlour at Ballymena Braid Centre
on Wednesday 8th October. It has been an
exciting time for me and one which I will
cherish for years to come. I have smiled until
my face is sore.
I have never been out of
the Country although
now that I have more time
I may travel. I am looking
forward to travelling by Bus
to Belfast and might even
go to Coleraine by train if
Mr Alan McWilliams will

OUR HEALTH & WELLBEING
‘GO BUS’ TAKES TO THE ROADS!
PAGE 18
In October, we launched the new
Translink ‘Go Bus’, a mobile venue to
help us better support and engage with
employees across the network. It is like
no other bus on the road!
We are always looking at different ways to support our
employees. The ‘Go Bus’ will be an important resource to
reach employees to offer health checks and information on
various health and wellbeing topics. It will also be used to
support some of our Go Safe and Go Eco activities including
talks to local schools.
Bus engineers have done a fantastic job of transforming
the single deck bus into an eye-catching venue on the road.
Inside, there is a private room for health checks or
consultations; a TV for presentations, it's Wi-Fi enabled
with seated areas for group discussions.
The ‘Go Bus’ is now in Derry~Londonderry for scheduled
visits to local schools. A calendar of when and where the
bus is going will be published later in the New Year. Keep an
eye out for the schedule and the 'Go Bus' could be coming to
your place of work very soon!
Well done to everyone who has contributed to the ‘Go Bus’.

30 YEARS!
Seamus started with Ulsterbus in 1984 as a shunter
cleaner. After a few years he moved to a bus driving role
in Armagh. A vacancy arose in his home town of Keady
in 1991 and he moved to the sub depot. Seamus was
driver-mentor both in Armagh and Keady and took up
the post of Relief Inspector in Armagh before taking the
opportunity to go part time. In all his 30 years Seamus
had an exceptional attendance record and was never
off sick.
In his spare time he is an avid gardener and likes to spend
many hours looking after his flowers. Seamus is also
seldom seen without his video camera. Another interest
of Seamus is his keen interest in driving and is a qualified
instructor. Seamus is described as a real character who
always has a saying or rhyme to tell. His colleagues say
his humour will be missed about the depot and we wish
Seamus our best wishes in his retirement.

CYCLE TO WORK
James Macauley
We have teamed up with sustainable transport charity Sustrans
to launch a new cycling initiative for staff to get active and
use cycling as a means of transport. The Sustrans ‘Go Active’
project, funded by Active Belfast in partnership with the Belfast
Health Development Unit, will aim to get staff in Central Station,
Milewater and Falls to use walking and cycling as a way of
getting to work. The project offers staff a range of incentives
and activities from led walks and cycles to bike maintenance and
National Standard cycle training courses.
Health and Safety Manager William Patton said:
“We are excited to be working with Sustrans to encourage staff
to get more active whether for the commute, at lunchtime or at
home. This project also compliments our Cycle to Work Scheme
which has been very popular with staff, where a bike and
equipment are tax free via the salary sacrifice initiative.”
Sustrans Workplace Officer Ross McGill commented:
“The project is a great way for staff to get advice about local
routes and to try their commute by foot or bike and it also offers
them the opportunity to avail of free training. For example,
the bike maintenance sessions and on road cycle training have
proven very popular with other companies.”

NOEL PLAYFAIR
The Great
STEAM
DRIVER
Twenty-five years on the footplate of RPSI trains and looking
forward to the same again – that is Noel Playfair, the senior
steam driver at N I Railways. Noel, who has been the mainstay
of The Railway Preservation Society of Ireland's (RPSI)
mainline operation in Northern Ireland over the past quarter
century, shared with Expresslines about where it all began and
how he rates the various locomotives.
Courtesy of Robin Morton, Steam Railway
When the young Noel Playfair used to gaze
out of the window of his primary school at
Whitehouse and see the steam-hauled spoil
trains pounding past, he often dreamt that one
day he would work on the footplate.
That aspiration became a reality 25 years
ago in 1989 when Mr Playfair was first rostered
to fire an RPSI engine on the mainline. Then
came promotion to the rank of steam driver –
and over the years since he has been a familiar
and popular face on the footplate of countless
RPSI trains.
He told Steam Railway: “Thanks are due
to the members of the RPSI who have made
it possible for people like me to live out my
dream. I am now aged 53 so I have a few years
left yet but if I am in good health I may, like
some of the West Coast Railways personnel,
work on after retirement.”
Mr Playfair, who joined NI Railways in
January 1979 as a General Porter in his now
home town of Carrickfergus, rose rapidly up
the ranks, becoming a conductor and then a
trainee driver at Larne Harbour in 1983.
After passing out as an N I Railways diesel
driver he first served as a trainee fireman on
the RPSI’s 2-6-4T No. 4 on the Bangor Belle in
August 1987.
“That day the locomotive was crewed by
Inspector Frank Dunlop, along with drivers
Bobby Quail and Billy McCaughley. As this was
my first day, I kept out of the way and watched
the masters at work.”
Mr Playfair was a quick learner and by early
1989 he was first rostered to fire on his own. As
he became more proficient the drivers would
on occasions let him drive.
“This was the side of the footplate I liked
best,” he recalled. “It was always my ambition
to become the driver on RPSI trains.”
In 1996, Mr Playfair was passed out as a steam
driver – and as senior colleagues gradually
retired, he had to shoulder more and more
responsibility.
“Thanks to the generosity of drivers like the
late George Gaw, I had gained considerable
experience at driving,” he said.
“I have enjoyed my 18 years as a
steam driver. For many years I have
had excellent firemen in terms of
people like Gary Moore and Steven
Glass.
Over the years Mr Playfair has been at
the regulator as RPSI trains have covered the
N I Railways network time and again, as well as
the Belfast-Dublin line.
So, from his unique perspective, how does
he rate the RPSI fleet?
“I have enjoyed working on them
PAGE 23
PAGE 24

RPSI celebrates their 50th anniversary.
“When No. 4 returned to traffic in
2001, I was impressed by its power,
especially on the banks, and at how
smooth it was. It was always such a
clean locomotive, so much so that
I didn’t bother with overalls while
I was driving it – my normal diesel
train uniform sufficed.”
But what about No. 85 Merlin, the Great
Northern Railway (Ireland) Compound?
“Although not holding the no. 1 spot for
me, this engine certainly has character,”
he admitted. “When we pass through the
countryside people turn and stare at the
bright blue engine. Sometimes when we pass
stations with other locomotive, some people
don’t even notice. But with No. 85, everyone
can feel its presence and this gives those of us
on the footplate a sense of pride.”
Mr Playfair recalled that he first made the
acquaintance of No. 85 back in the 1980s in
the company of former Great Northern driver
Bobby Quail, who instructed him in the art of
Compound driving.
The RPSI’s other operational engine at
present, 2-6-0 No. 461 is, according to Mr
Playfair, in common with now retired 0-6-0
No. 186, happiest on shorter trains and shorter
runs, but well able to rise to the challenge.
“Looking to the future I am relishing
the challenge that the restoration of former
GNR(I) 4-4-0 No. 131,” he said. “I am sure
that in 1970, no-one could have predicted
that a Compound would be storming up the
Wellington Bank from Dundalk in 2014.
“Impressive as the exhibits in a museum
are, steam locomotives make much more of
an impact when they are alive and working.
“I must pay tribute to the talented
volunteer workforce of the RPSI who
give up so much of their free time to
allow the public to witness a steam
train in full cry. Nothing can match
that sight.”

all but one or two stand out,” he said. “No. 171
Slieve Gullion is in my view the most useful
engine. It is quick, very steady, a good climber
and most useful of all, has an exhaust injector
which is very handy.
“No. 4, the 2-6-4T, is the locomotive I
remember from my childhood. I have fond
memories of Sunday School excursions from
Whiteabbey to Portrush, and of watching
spoil trains passing my primary school at
Whitehouse.

Prostate cancer is a disease that starts in
the cells of the prostate gland. Cancer occurs
when normal body cells get out of control,
multiply and spread. These cells clump
together to form a cancerous or malignant
tumour which can then grow and damage
healthy parts of the body.
Prostate cancer usually grows slowly,
especially in older patients. It may be a
long time before it leads to troublesome
symptoms or needs treatment. Some men are
never aware that they have prostate cancer.

changing their appearance and growing a
moustache for the 30 days of Movember,
to spark conversation and raise funds while
helping to promote men’s health.
To some casual observers Movember may be
so ‘last year’. But for Darren Herron it’s been
an eye opener and for many of his colleagues
at Europa they were only too glad to get
on board and don a little more facial hair to
support this worthy cause.
For men living with and beyond prostate
cancer, the impact of the disease on their
everyday life is significant. As treatment
for men with prostate cancer is completed,
many men report fear of recurrence, fatigue,
distress, anxiety, depression, erectile
dysfunction and urinary incontinence.

Westport, Achill Island & Co Mayo
To celebrate the launch of the 2015 Ulsterbus
Tours Escorted Coach Holidays brochure we
have a fantastic prize on offer of a 5 day break
to the west of Ireland.
Westport in Co Mayo is known for its charisma and continental flavour, and has
become one of Ireland’s most popular and cosmopolitan holiday destinations.
The cheerful, multi-coloured shop fronts jostle for attention with an attractive
selection of shops, pubs, cafés and restaurants.
The hotel for this tour is the 3* Clew Bay which offers all the facilities you would
expect from a good family-run property along with a fascinating programme of
evening demonstrations. Its central location in Westport means you will have the
opportunity to enjoy many of the attractions on offer in this very popular resort.
Of course, its location offers an excellent base from which to explore Achill
Island, Slievemore Deserted Village, the Céide Fields, Ballina and Galway city.
This great prize is for 2 people in shared accommodation for 4 nights and is
valid for any scheduled tour departure from April through to September 2015.
