TITAN WEEKLY February 1 , 2015 st Creativity is intelligence having fun. ~ Albert Einstein Student Spotlight CONGRATULATIONS to GREG GUTIERREZ for receiving a Silver Medal at the Region 6 SkillsUSA Leadership Competition in Extemporaneous Speaking!! What’s New PRINCIPAL’S FORUM COMMUNICATION TIPS SENIORS NEEDING FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE ATHLETES-TICKET TO PLAY FRESH FLOWER LEIS FOR GRADUATION WINGS ‘N’ THINGS DANCE FUNDRAISER The Next Principal’s Forum, formerly known as Principal’s Coffee will be on Wednesday February 4th @ 8:30 am in K-1. The Principal’s Forum is more than just coffee! All are invited to attend and this week we will be discussing how to support your student. It is a chance for parents to engage in workshops, discussions and other learning opportunities! Navigating the teen years is very scary for both parents and teens. Experts in communication offer these tips: use open-ended sentences (but remember that teens may only give you partial truths); asking their opinions on issues that come up in the news will allow you to see their perspectives and can give you “red flags” for situations that come up in their own lives; when talking to them about values, make sure to tell them WHY not just “DON’T” (for example: “the reason I don’t want you to drink is because it is dangerous and things happen…” instead of “it’s against the law.”). For more tips, go to “What I Wish My Parents Knew” March 31st at RBHS or contact the Student Services Office. For seniors who might need financial assistance, the guidelines are that students must have at least a 2.0 GPA and no U’s on their report cards. For every $10 of assistance being requested, we ask that students do one hour of community service. For example, if prom is $60 then a student would need to do six hours of community service for a free ticket. We can help with prom, yearbooks, Grad Night, and caps and gowns. For more information, contact Traci Barker-Ball in Student Services at [email protected] 858 748-0245 ext. 5393. The deadline for ticket to play paperwork for Spring Sport Athletes Deadline is Feb 10, 2015. Returning Athletes-pick up your ticket if on file. Fresh Flower Lei From Hawaii for your Senior. The goal of the family conference is to build on family strengths while encouraging self-advocacy and awareness of community services that support student well-being. For more information visit: http://www.powayusd.com/depts/student_support/caringconnection.shtml COMMUNITY SERVICE As opportunities arise for students to do community service, announcements are updated @: http://powayusd.sdcoe.k12.ca.us/pusdphs/Studentservices/communityservice.shtml. While PHS does NOT have a community service requirement to graduate, some programs require community service and colleges LOVE to see many hours accumulated. Students should STUDENT SERVICES keep track of their own hours throughout their high school career. TUTORING AFTER-SCHOOL In need of a peer tutor? Donations can be dropped off at the main office or Student Services. FOOD DONATIONS SOUGHT The Student Service Office feeds about 30 students every day from food donations from parents. Nonperishable items such as Cup-O-Noodles, microwaveable mac and cheese (individual sizes), granola bars, fruit snacks, popcorn, etc. are always appreciated. The students who benefit from these donations are students who forgot their lunch, didn’t have any money for lunch, and/or don’t qualify for free/reduced lunches. All colleges will utilize your highest score, whether that is from the SAT or the ACT. The UC system will utilize your highest test score from a single test date, while the CSU system will “super score,” taking your highest sections scores even if they come from multiple testing dates to create an overall highest score.
