ABOUT SAMPE
SAMPE is a global organization devoted to the promotion of technical
excellence in materials and process engineering, totalling around 15,000
engineers, technologists and materials scientists. It was founded in 1944
by Californian aerospace engineers with the goal to build a professional
network and improve the exchange of technical information. Since
those times, SAMPE has spread all over the world and is divided in
about 40 chapters.
SAMPE EUROPE has been formed to become an association
of persons of like interests in the field of material and
process engineering for all types of advanced materials
in all markets. Aerospace, Automotive, Energy &
Offshore Industry have been the main targets in the
last decade.
In Europe we have activities in more than
25 countries, organized predominantly
in national associations like those of
France, Germany, Italy, Switzerland,
Spain , Russia and sometimes also in
international groups like Benelux,
UK & Eire, Scandinavia...

members worldwide and all other
materials and process professionals
and students,
It is my honor and pleasure to warmly invite you to
Paris on the day before JEC opens its doors, in order to
participate in SAMPE Europe’s new one-day Summit event.
The conference program addresses M&P developments and
issues for a broad range of markets. High level speakers from
renown companies and institutes in Europe, Asia and the US will
present latest technology developments and market trends. During the
summit, there is ample opportunity for the exchange of ideas and making
new acquaintances during the coffee breaks, lunch and dinner.
This Summit conference is worth your while if you are
materials and process researcher, engineer or manager in
either the aerospace, automotive or industrial market.
See you on March 9th!

President SAMPE Europe
SPEAKERS
BLOCK A - AUTOMOTIVE
Dr. Luciano De Oto
Head of ACRC, Lamborghini, Italy.
“Lightweight Body in white construction: The Lamborghini Huracàn”
Andreas Wüllner
Managing Director of SGL Automotive Carbon Fibers GmbH & Co. KG. A BMW Group and
SGL Group Joint Venture, Germany.
“Carbon Fibers in automotive series production.”
Akihiko Kitano Ph. D
General Manager Automotive & Aircraft Center, Toray Ind. Inc., Japan.
“Carbon Composites; Transition from Aircraft to Automotive, Challenges and
Opportunities”,
This lecture presents first a brief history of carbon fiber development and an introductive
characteristic of carbon composites. I then show application examples of carbon
composites in aircraft and automotive including materials and manufacturing processes.
BLOCK B – ADVANCED PRODUCTS & ENGINEERING
Ralph Resnick
National Center for Defense Manufacturing and Machining (NCDMM) & America Makes –
National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Institute, USA.
“When America Makes America Works! – The Additive Manufacturing Program in the USA.”
Michel Glotin
Directeur Scientifique Matériaux, Arkema, France.
“Thermoplastic Composites for automotive structural parts: meeting the 2 minutes
challenge.”
One of the remaining challenges for composite technology to enter the automotive mass
market is to reach an overall part production cycle time well below 2 minutes, which
translates in ever shorter curing times for the matrix resins during the HP-RTM manufacturing process. Moving to
Thermoplastic Composites could offer several advantages on final part properties and recyclability, but also on cycle
time reduction.
Rogier Mandos
Business Development Manager R&D, Polytec Group, Austria.
“Composite Solutions for Automotive Mass Production.”
A hybrid composite-aluminium bottom plate for passenger cars is one of the examples of
recently developed products for future mass production.
BLOCK C – ENERGY & OFFSHORE INDUSTRY
Dr.ir. Roel W. Schuring
Vice president engineering, LM Wind Power A/S, Denmark.
“Windpower blades materials technology: the challenge of high loads and reliability at
low costs”
Using relatively cheap materials such as mainly glass fibers and polyester, LM Wind Power
builds blades that exceed aeronautical loads in many respects. The contribution will give
an overview of the technologies that LM uses to do so. The contribution will continue with an overview of contemporary
challenges to boost reliability even further whilst reducing weight, after which technical solutions will be suggested.
 inze J. van der Schuit
R
CEO Fibremax, NL.
‘’High-tech materials needs high-tech production methods’’ - Endless wound precision
cables for offshore & energy industry.
The usage of high-tech materials like, Carbon, Aramid, HMPE e.g. in the industry is
upcoming. This means that production methods have to evolve also. FibreMax developed
a way to produce high tech cables/tendons with a technology called ‘’endless winding’’.
They are used in cranes, mining, aerospace and renewable energy industry as a standard since 2010.
Dr. Niccolo Pini
COO Kringlan Composites, Switzerland.
“Hybrid wheel new key factor for fuel economy in automotive”; Development and
Manufacturing of Thermoplastic Carbon Wheels.
Thermoplastic carbon wheels offer a high strength, lightweight solution
to help automakers improve performance and fuel economy. The revolutionary
wheel design and the material technology, upon which it is based, can also offer sustainability advantages with
reduced emissions during operation, less environmental impact from manufacturing compared to conventional
processes and full material recyclability. 2013 the second generation of Kringlan wheel design has been successfully
tested, followed in 2014 by the release of our first hybrid wheel.
BLOCK D – AEROSPACE
Guy Larnac
Materials and structures technical coordinator -TSOEM AIRBUS Defense & Space, France.
“Airbus new challenges and vision in design, structures and technologies for future
developments.”
The next generation of spacecraft and launchers, due to a more and more aggressive
competition make mandatory to envisage the development and qualification of
technologies in a different way.
Prof Xiaosu Yi
Beijing Institute of Aeronautical Materials, China.
“Development of high-performance structural composites with multifunctionality for
aerospace application.”
A new development has been performed to simultaneously improve the electric
conductivity and the impact damage resistance of the carbon-fiber reinforced composite for
aircraft application. It is called Functionalized Interlayer Technology (FIT).
Alain TROPIS
Chief Operating Officer Development at STELIA AEROSPACE (Airbus Group), France.
“Composite In aerostructure, evolution and future challenge.”
