A word about communion. We serve an open communion here
at HRMCC. That is, you need not be a member of this church or of our
denomination to participate. We follow the practice of our denomination in
offering a brief prayer of thanksgiving and blessing with you as you are
served. We serve unfermented grape juice to honor any who might be in
recovery. If you are unable to come to the table, please let an usher know
and we will bring communion to you at your seat. Please use the time while
others are served as a time of prayer and reflection.

ministry to the world! Amen.
Let us declare the mystery of our faith!

Scripture Readings for Today’s Sermon

1 Corinthians 8: 7-13
It is not everyone, however, who has this knowledge. Since
some have become so accustomed to idols until now, they
still think of the food they eat as food offered to an idol; and
their conscience, being weak, is defiled. ‘Food will not bring
us close to God.’ We are no worse off if we do not eat, and no
better off if we do. But take care that this liberty of yours
does not somehow become a stumbling-block to the weak.
For if others see you, who possess knowledge, eating in the
temple of an idol, might they not, since their conscience is
weak, be encouraged to the point of eating food sacrificed to
idols? So by your knowledge those weak believers for whom
Christ died are destroyed. But when you thus sin against
members of your family, and wound their conscience when it
is weak, you sin against Christ. Therefore, if food is a cause
of their falling, I will never eat meat, so that I may not cause
one of them to fall.
Mark 1: 21-28
They went to Capernaum; and when the Sabbath came, he
entered the synagogue and taught. They were astounded at
his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority, and
not as the scribes. Just then there was in their synagogue a
man with an unclean spirit, and he cried out, ‘What have
you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are, the Holy One of God.’ But Jesus rebuked him, saying, ‘Be silent, and come out of him!’
And the unclean spirit, throwing him into convulsions and
crying with a loud voice, came out of him. They were all
amazed, and they kept on asking one another, ‘What is this?
A new teaching—with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him.’ At once his fame began to

“Authority Over Afflictions”
During the next several Sundays, our sermons are going to take
a closer look at the wondrous ways Jesus’ power can be manifested in our lives. Today’s readings call us to acknowledge and examine the despised, defiled, and demonic things in our daily lives.
The first reading looks at some thing that has been deemed
“unclean”. The second reading then looks at someone who has
been deemed “unclean”. Jesus’ “power” (authority) transforms
that which has been declared unclean, and makes it “clean”.
The Apostle Paul discusses one of the hot topics of his day;
whether or not it’s okay to eat food that has been offered to idols.
Paul asks his readers to be accountable for the possible negative
influence we may have on others by what we do and say. Just because we may know that something is okay doesn’t mean that
others around or on the sidelines know or understand. Paul is admonishing us to be sensitive and mindful that our laxness and
comfortableness with certain issues may become a source of confusion and despair for others. He uses the term “stumblingblock”. Rather than presume that people will understand, accept,
and adapt, (or just mind their own business) we are to share the
reality that tolerance and acceptance is also a part of God’s plan.
When we perceive that someone is struggling with a “growth barrier”, we can either help them through it or contribute to the crash
into it. We should never avoid opportunities for educational and
constructive dialogue with those of more restrictive beliefs and
perspectives. All parties will learn and grow.
The gospel reading shows us a person deemed unclean. As the
scene unfolds, we realize that although the man needs healing, so
too does Jesus’ audience. Jesus’ authority and power are displayed as the man receives healing and deliverance. However,
Jesus’ audience was merely “amazed” at this “new teaching”, and
seemed apathetic to the suffering man’s plight. They kept their
distance because the man was “unclean”. Jesus’ power and authority impressed them, but it was intended to open them and heal
them of their ambivalence. Jesus’ authority (his teachings of
