All:
Almighty God,

The Proclamation of the Word
First Reading:
Deuteronomy 18: 15-20
read by Grace Stephens
The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your own people; you
shall heed such a prophet. This is what you requested of the Lord your God at Horeb on the day
of the assembly when you said: “If I hear the voice of the Lord my God any more, or ever again
see this great fire, I will die.” Then the Lord replied to me: “They are right in what they have
said. I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their own people; I will put my
words in the mouth of the prophet, who shall speak to them everything that I command. Anyone
who does not heed the words that the prophet shall speak in my name, I myself will hold
accountable. But any prophet who speaks in the name of other gods, or who presumes to speak
in my name a word that I have not commanded the prophet to speak—that prophet shall die.”
Psalm 111

1 Corinthians 8: 1-13
read by Darlene Acton
Now concerning food sacrificed to idols: we know that “all of us possess knowledge.” Knowledge
puffs up, but love builds up. Anyone who claims to know something does not yet have the
necessary knowledge; but anyone who loves God is known by him. Hence, as to the eating of
food offered to idols, we know that “no idol in the world really exists,” and that “there is no God
but one.” Indeed, even though there may be so-called gods in heaven or on earth—as in fact
there are many gods and many lords— yet for us there is one God, the Father, from whom are all
things and for whom we exist, and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things and
through whom we exist. It is not everyone, however, who has this knowledge. Since some have
become so accustomed to idols until now, they still think of the food they eat as food offered to
an idol; and their conscience, being weak, is defiled. “Food will not bring us close to God.” We
are no worse off if we do not eat, and no better off if we do. But take care that this liberty of
yours does not somehow become a stumbling block to the weak. For if others see you, who
possess knowledge, eating in the temple of an idol, might they not, since their conscience is weak,
be encouraged to the point of eating food sacrificed to idols? So by your knowledge those weak
believers for whom Christ died are destroyed. But when you thus sin against members of your
family, and wound their conscience when it is weak, you sin against Christ. Therefore, if food is a
cause of their falling, I will never eat meat, so that I may not cause one of them to fall.

The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St. Mark (1: 21-28).
Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
They went to Capernaum; and when the sabbath came, he entered the synagogue and
taught. They were astounded at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority, and not
as the scribes. Just then there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit, and he cried
out, “What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who
you are, the Holy One of God.” But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent, and come out of
him!” And the unclean spirit, convulsing him and crying with a loud voice, came out of him. They
were all amazed, and they kept on asking one another, “What is this? A new teaching—with
authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him.” At once his fame began to
spread throughout the surrounding region of Galilee.

The Reverend Arlene Young
Celebrant: Let us confess our faith, as we say,
All:
We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all
that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally
begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not
made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our
salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from
the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he
suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures;
he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory
to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father. With the Father and the Son he is
worshipped and glorified. He has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic
and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the
resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.
The Prayers of the People
led by Keith Spencer
Celebrant: Dear friends in Christ, God is steadfast in love and infinite in mercy; he welcomes
sinners and invites them to his table. Let us confess our sins, confident in God’s
forgiveness.
Celebrant: Most merciful God,
All:
we confess that we have sinned against you in thought word, and deed, by what we
have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole
heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we
humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive
us, that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your name.
Amen.
Celebrant: Almighty God have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins,
confirm and strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life through Jesus
Christ our Lord.

People:
It is right to give our thanks and praise.
Celebrant: We give you thanks and praise, almighty God, through your beloved Son, Jesus Christ,
our Saviour and Redeemer. He is your living Word, through whom you have created all things. By
the power of the Holy Spirit he took flesh of the Virgin Mary and shared our human nature. He
lived and died as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all. In fulfilment of your
will he stretched out his hands in suffering, to bring release to those who place their hope in you;
and so he won for you a holy people. He chose to bear our griefs and sorrows, and to give up his
life on the cross, that he might shatter the chains of evil and death, and banish the darkness of sin
and despair. By his resurrection he brings us into the light of your presence. Now with all creation
we raise our voices to proclaim the glory of your name.
All:
Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, (2x)
heaven and earth are full, full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest, hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest, hosanna in the highest.
Hymn Book #735
Celebrant: Holy and gracious God, accept our praise, through your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ;
who on the night he was handed over to suffering and death, took bread and gave you thanks,
saying, “Take, and eat: this is my body which is broken for you.” In the same way he took the
cup, saying, “This is my blood which is shed for you. When you do this, you do it in memory of
me.” Remembering, therefore, his death and resurrection, we offer you this bread and this cup,
giving thanks that you have made us worthy to stand in your presence and serve you. We ask you
to send your Holy Spirit upon the offering of your holy Church. Gather into one all who share in
these sacred mysteries, filling them with the Holy Spirit and confirming their faith in the truth,
that together we may praise you and give you glory through your Servant, Jesus Christ. All glory
and honour are yours, Father and Son, with the Holy Spirit in the holy Church, now and for ever.
People:
Amen.
Celebrant: As our Saviour taught us, let us pray,
All:
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be
done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we
forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from
evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen.
Celebrant: We break the bread of life, and that life is the light of the world.
All:
God here among us, light in the midst of us, bring us to light and life.

The Social Justice Action Team is planning a Labyrinth walk for Saturday, February 14th, in the
Parish Hall, at 4:00 PM. If you have walked the labyrinth before, you know that it is one approach
to meditation. If you have not walked the labyrinth before, this would be a good chance to try it.
There will be a social time following the walk, and you may bring refreshments, if you wish.
Nancy and Shandip Saha are coordinating the event, and look forward to seeing you there .
Inner City Pastoral Ministry Service and Luncheon: Sunday, February 22nd 2015
This is an annual event that Christ Church has supported one Sunday each
year, for over a decade now. It is a wonderful opportunity to help out our
inner city brothers and sisters. This year we are partnered with St. Matthew’s
(St. Albert) and together we will be serving lunch to 300 people at the Bissell
Centre (10527-96 St. NW).
There are several ways to show your support as a member of our congregation:
1.
2.
If you have time to bake finger desserts like cookies or squares, or make a couple of loaves
of sandwiches at home, that would be terrific.
If you are able to purchase some fresh fruit or veggies; that would be much appreciated.
3. Perhaps you are able to make a small financial donation so that supplies for this lunch may
be purchased. Simply put your donation in an envelope marked ICPM on the outside and place
it in the collection plate any Sunday up to and including Sunday, February 22nd.
4. We also need a few more people to help serve the food at the luncheon itself on Sunday,
February 22nd. Volunteers will carpool from Christ Church at 8:45 AM to set up the lunch,
attend the church service led by the Inner City Pastoral Ministry team, and then serve the lunch.
Clean-up follows and we will be done by about 1:30 p.m.
Please consider how you might help and add your name to the sign-up sheets in the hall,
just outside the kitchen door. If you have any questions, please contact Diane Morgan at
780-444-5964.
Save the Date!! The Social Justice Action Team & the Men’s Group will host a special
event on March 8th at 1:00pm in our hall. It will be a presentation with a panel of 5
experts and a moderator to discuss the question: “What would be a good death?” and
how euthanasia/physician-assisted death might or might not contribute to a good death.
We will have physicians, an ethicist, and professionals from different faith perspectives
on the panel. Henry Schuurman, from our parish, will be the moderator. This is a great
opportunity to hear and raise many issues and questions on this important issue. All are
welcome. Please invite your friends and family.
Do you love working on a team? Do you have great organizational skills? Are
you creative & full of ideas? If so, how would you like to be a part of one of
Christ Church’s most exciting annual events? This year’s Oliver Community
Festival is fast approaching and we are looking for a co-chair from Christ
Church. The overwhelming response from our volunteers last year was that they
wanted to see Christ Church continue to be involved with the festival but that will not happen
if we do not have leadership. Please let Kathryn know if you are interested in this exciting
collaboration with our friends in Christ at Robertson Wesley, Oliver Community League & the
124th St. Business Association.
