The Center for International Private Enterprise (CIPE) is one of the four non-profit core
institutes of the National Endowment for Democracy, funded by the U.S. Chamber of
Commerce.
Mission: To strengthen democracy around the globe through private enterprise and
market-oriented reform. CIPE works alongside business leaders, policymakers, and

Backgrounder: Center for International Private Enterprise
The Center for International Private Enterprise (CIPE) is one of the four non-profit core
institutes of the National Endowment for Democracy, funded by the U.S. Chamber of
Commerce. It stands at the intersection of economic freedom and political liberalization
to promote the progress and development of democracies worldwide.
Mission:
Since 1983 CIPE has worked to strengthen democracy around the globe through private
enterprise and market-oriented reform. CIPE works alongside business leaders,

society. CIPE's overall purpose is to encourage the growth of private enterprise principles
and organizations that contribute to democratic development
Objectives:
By building business organizations committed to the values of private enterprise and
democracy, CIPE plays a key role in encouraging and sustaining democratic transitions
through specific objectives. CIPE aims to support the growing interest in market
economics and private enterprise among government and society; promote business
participation in the democratic process; increase the base of business talent in the
developing world; to encourage an emergence of privatized state-owned firms; and
deregulate the economic system. CIPE also aims to enhance public perception of the
economic importance of entrepreneurship; and build independent business organizations.
Key Programs:
CIPE develops partnerships to support grassroots networks in developing countries,
capacity building programs, and technical assistance through field offices. CIPE’s key
program areas include anticorruption, advocacy, business associations, corporate
governance, democratic governance, access to information, the informal sector and
property rights, and women and youth.
Areas of Impact:
CIPE has established programs around the globe to fulfill its pro-democratic objectives.
The organization has partnerships in Ghana, The Philippines, Armenia, Russia, Paraguay,
and Lebanon, Latin America and the Caribbean.
Grants:
CIPE provides financial support in the form of grants to non-government business
organizations such as chambers of commerce, employers' federations, trade associations,
and private enterprise-oriented research groups throughout the world. Grants are made
directly to non-U.S. business organizations on a private basis, without government
intervention.
