Preparing for a season of growth
Even though there is still snow on the ground and it was 16 degrees when I came in
this morning, the garden project is pressing forward. Over the past month we have been
able to find space indoors and have constructed our germination area. Along with the
construction of spaces we have also been constructing the program material for our
students. Each student will learn the basics of sustainable agriculture as applied to the
inner-city environment.
Mercy Kitchens held their second graduation service with 7 students completing the
13 week training course. As more students attend this class growth opportunities have also
been experienced here. Additional tutoring classes for students are being scheduled toward
assisting them in passing the rigorous State testing. For many of the students it has been a
long time since they have taken a test like this. Although they have performed well in the
classroom and at the fundraising activities some improvement is still needed with the
paperwork.
February marks yet another new addition to the Inn. We now have a Richland
Culinary Intern with us three days a week. This is a great opportunity for the RCC students to
experience what we do and share their experience with fellow students in class. Thank you
RCC for being such a wonderful community partner to us.
For me, growth comes from attending a wonderful new class at Millikin University
Tabor Business School focused on business growth ventures. Several business leaders from
our community will meet and assist each other with reflecting, visioning, and organizing
themselves as we plan the next five years of our business growth.
As always, thank you for your wonderful support, your volunteer time, and keeping
us in your prayers.

Creative projects
With the help of several MacArthur High School students
we were able to create a raised bed which allows
wheelchair access. Through the winter months we were
able to install bird netting and the supports for row
covering.
How can you Help?
Once again, we could not accomplish what we have without
your help!
Here are a few ways in which you can become involved with
what we are doing.





Volunteer some time while working with our students
in the gardens.
Invite us to your church and civic groups to present
our future plans.
Watch our wish list for something that might interest
you.
Spread the word about the good things we are
accomplishing.
Sponsor a student for one of our training classes.
Upcycling
This past fall we received a donation of used
windows from a church remodeling project. It took
a while and a great deal of time removing the paint
but we were able to use the windows to create a
small greenhouse environment for the garden.

Mercy Kitchens Training program update
Presenting for The Good Samaritan Inn
On January 23rd our students completed their 13 week training
course by attending a wonderful graduation service. Each
student received a completion certificate and a gift knife from
the Chef.
A large part of the Executive Director’s job is presenting the
mission of the Inn to the community. Presentations are made
each month to church groups, civic groups, businesses, and
schools. If you would like to have us present for your groups
please just give us a call and we will set a date. 429-1455

Wish List
The Wish List is a regular feature of our newsletter – it’s a list
of items we particularly need that we are praying hard God
will provide. If you’d like to help, please consider donating or
contributing toward one of the following:
1. One huge game changer for the installation of
future garden lots is a tractor with a tiller.
I know this is a tall order, but donations have started coming
in. Thanks!
GSI has received a grant from Captain Planet
foundation to install a composting system which
uses worms to turn waste food into rich fertilizer for
the garden. Keep watching throughout this spring as
we document the creation of our new
vermicomposting station at the Inn.
2. Liquid laundry soap.
3. Compost for the gardens. We will be in need of
compost for all the new lots we open up this
spring.
4. Electricity installed in our garage.
5. Flowers for the gardens.
6. Donation of garden plants.
