Objective: Attendees will review the many causes of lower extremity ulcers which fall outside the boundaries of what is typical. Strategies for diagnosis will be reviewed. Upon Completion attendees will know how AFO's can be used for DJD of the ankle and hind foot, understand the evaluation and management of neuromuscular conditions of the lower extremity and acquire hands-on experience in proper casting techniques of podiatric ankle-foot orthoses. In addition, by the completion of this module, the participant will: THURSDAY A.M. – INFECTION UPDATE FOR THE CLINICAL PRACITIONER This module will present an in-depth update on current principles of evaluation and management of the diabetic/high risk foot and musculoskeletal infection. To this end, the participant will be able to: - Compare and contrast emerging imaging techniques in bone & joint imaging of infection, with potential application to the complicated Diabetic foot infection - Relate current imaging principles of Diabetic foot infection - Summarize the new IDSA Criteria for treating soft tissue infections - Defend the use, and selection of antibiotics in Diabetic foot infection - Defend the use and selection of topical antibacterial dressings based upon recent evidence in the medical literature - Enumerate current strategies for MRSA treatment, with emphasis on new and emerging antiinfective agents (including the potential use topical agents) - Recall basic principles of surgical management of the infected foot - Recognize signs of necrotizing foot/lower-extremity infections, and enumerate fundamental manage ment principles THURSDAY AFTERNOON SESSION A – DIAGNOSIS & TREATMENT OF ANKLE PROBLEMS This module will present an update to office evaluation and management of the injured ankle. To this end, the participant will be able to: - Outline the steps of in-office evaluation & management of the sprained ankle - Recount basic ankle MRI protocols, and identify basic pathologies associated with MRI of the Injured Ankle - Recognize basic MRI findings indicative of ankle joint impingement syndromes - Present the most current principles of lateral ankle stabilization Interesting Case Studies in Podiatric Medicine - This presentation will highlight various interesting dermatological conditions as they might manifest in the skin of the lower extremity.
