This module will provide the physician with an in-depth update of the latest controversies and surgical techniques in the surgery of hallux abducto valgus deformity.

Correlate pronation with hallux valgus formation
Offer pros and cons for the use of various fixation methods for first ray osteotomies
Defend the use of advanced vs. conventional osseous fixation methods in osteotomy &

Defend the use of the base-wedge 1st ray osteotomy in modern practice

WEDNESDAY P.M. – ADULT-ACQUIRED PES PLANUS DEFORMITY UPDATE
This module will provide the physician with an in-depth update of the latest principles of conservative and surgical management of adult-acquired pes planus deformity and staged posterior tibialis
tendon dysfunction. As a modular update, practitioner experience is tempered against a foundation of evidence-based medicine.
By the completion of this module, the practitioner will:
THURSDAY AFTERNOON SESSION B – PODOPEDIATRICS UPDATE
This module will present updates to common topics involving the pediatric foot. As with all modular
update sessions, practitioner experience is tempered against a foundation of evidence-based
medicine. To this end, the participant will be able to:

Enumerate current management principles of the pediatric hallux valgus deformity
Relate surgical treatment concepts for tarsal coalitions
Select advanced surgical methods to manage the more challenging tarsal coalition cases
Offer an organized approach to the evaluation of pediatric flatfoot
Present current selection and procedural principles of the subtalar joint arthroereisis procedure
FRIDAY MORNING SESSION A: PRACTICAL BIOMECHANICS – AND APPLICATIONS FOR THE
CLINICIAN
This module will focus on applied biomechanical principles to a range of everyday clinical problems
in podiatric and sports medicine practice. The session will be moderated by Douglas Richie, D.P.M.
By the end of this module, the podiatric practitioner will be able to:

Basically outline how applied biomechanics relates to everyday Podiatric office practice
Illuminate basic principles of orthotic modification and repair
Advance arguments that foot orthoses can and do influence muscular activity
Integrate applied biomechanical principles based upon clinical case studies
- Be able to discuss the significance of the “twisted plate” theory in flatfoot procedure selection
and implementation
- Discover emerging technologies for the management of adult-acquired pes planus deformity
- Be able to present contrasting arguments of conservative vs. surgical treatment of stage II
deformities
- Present an algorithmic/organized approach to planning flatfoot surgery
- Enumerate pros and cons of the double calcaneal osteotomy
- Relate the current use of subtalar joint and triple arthrodesis for Stage III/IV deformities along
with ankle joint arthritis
FRIDAY MORNING SESSION B: 2015 NUTS N’ BOLTS DERMATOLOGY UPDATE - MODERN
OFFICE PRACTICE ESSENTIALS
The practitioner will become familiar with dermatologic principles in modern-day practice environment, and enhance his/her diagnostic and management acumen via a series of podiatric dermatologic case studies
AFTERNOON WORKSHOP (JSB Orthotics): “EXPANDING AFO THERAPY IN PODIATRIC
PRACTICE”
Objective: To teach how AFO's can be used for Tendinopathy conditions of the foot and ankle
Exceptional Ulcer Etiologies...They Exist! Objective: Attendees will review the many causes of
lower extremity ulcers which fall outside the boundaries of what is typical. Strategies for diagnosis
will be reviewed.
Upon Completion attendees will know how AFO's can be used for DJD of the ankle and hind foot,
understand the evaluation and management of neuromuscular conditions of the lower extremity
and acquire hands-on experience in proper casting techniques of podiatric ankle-foot orthoses.
In addition, by the completion of this module, the participant will:
THURSDAY A.M. – INFECTION UPDATE FOR THE CLINICAL PRACITIONER
This module will present an in-depth update on current principles of evaluation and management of
the diabetic/high risk foot and musculoskeletal infection. To this end, the participant will be able to:
- Compare and contrast emerging imaging techniques in bone & joint imaging of infection, with
potential application to the complicated Diabetic foot infection
- Relate current imaging principles of Diabetic foot infection
- Summarize the new IDSA Criteria for treating soft tissue infections
- Defend the use, and selection of antibiotics in Diabetic foot infection
- Defend the use and selection of topical antibacterial dressings based upon recent evidence in the
medical literature
- Enumerate current strategies for MRSA treatment, with emphasis on new and emerging antiinfective agents (including the potential use topical agents)
- Recall basic principles of surgical management of the infected foot
- Recognize signs of necrotizing foot/lower-extremity infections, and enumerate fundamental manage
ment principles
THURSDAY AFTERNOON SESSION A – DIAGNOSIS & TREATMENT OF ANKLE PROBLEMS
This module will present an update to office evaluation and management of the injured ankle.
To this end, the participant will be able to:
- Outline the steps of in-office evaluation & management of the sprained ankle
- Recount basic ankle MRI protocols, and identify basic pathologies associated with MRI of the
Injured Ankle
- Recognize basic MRI findings indicative of ankle joint impingement syndromes
- Present the most current principles of lateral ankle stabilization
Interesting Case Studies in Podiatric Medicine - This presentation will highlight various interesting
dermatological conditions as they might manifest in the skin of the lower extremity. Attendees of
this session will gain a better appreciation for the wide array of skin disease that can present in the
foot, and the value of critical dermatological examinations.
- Be able to employ new topical and oral treatments for onychomycosis
- Be able to defend the use of office / pocket dermoscopy in the evaluation of suspected skin
pathology
- List the basic dermoscopic characteristics of the more commonly encountered skin lesions
SATURDAY MORNING - LIMB SALVAGE, VASCULAR MEDICINE UPDATE
The podiatric physician is commonly pressed to recognize and manage patients with underlying
vascular disorders, both arterial and venous. By the completion of this module, the participant will
be able to:

Outline the steps in a basic assessment of the high risk PVD patient
List basic P.A.D. clinical syndromes and their management
Enumerate principles of perioperative management of anticoagulative disorders
Advance the new WIFi grading collaborative Vascular surgery-Podiatry system for the threatened
dysvascular limb
- Based upon current EBM of critical limb ischemic outcomes, defend Endo vs Open vascular
surgical techniques
- Recount current concepts in revascularization of the threatened limb
- Outline current EBM principles of DVT prophylaxis in foot surgery
SUNDAY MORNING – GETTING BETTER AT RADIOGRAPHIC INTERPRETATION
The goal of this session is to afford participants an opportunity to improve their radiographic
interpretive skills. This will be accomplished with a combination of lectures and cases. By the end
of this session, the practitioner will able to:

Recognize and classify basic MSK pathologies
Generate appropriate differentials
