These three characteristics are important for a Stephen Minister. Each Stephen Minister is a well-trained congregation member who provides high-quality emotional and spiritual support to people who are hurting. Each Stephen Minister typically serves one Care Receiver at a time and meets with that person once a week. Men are matched with men, and women with women. The caring relationship lasts for as long as the need remains. Peace, If you did not know, February is the beginning of the NASCAR Season. At the beginning of each race we are greeted with the iconic line, “Drivers, start your engines”. With those words, the deafening sound of stock car engines and fans cheering resound throughout the stadium and beyond. No, it’s not a new year. But here at Peace UCC, February is our beginning of a new season as well. This was “LIVED OUT” at our awesome Annual Meeting on Sunday, January 25. During that meeting, we heard of the many dynamic ministries that are in place at Peace UCC and what our bright future is looking like. We gave thanks for the wonderful leadership of our Church Council and welcomed new leadership. We heard about the new Listos Preschool and Childcare Center. We were reminded about the exciting Capital Campaign for the building project that will kick-off on February 15. But the most moving part of this meeting was that through the extraordinary gifts and commitment from the Peace UCC members, we are well on our way to have a fully balanced budget for 2015. With a few more additional gifts and/or pledges we will be able to have a projected fully balanced budget!!! THANK YOU for all who stepped up to make this possible! February also brings us the beginning of a special season in the Church Year. Our Lenten Journey begins with our Ash Wednesday Service on February 18 at 6:30pm. This year, we will once again gather during Lent to engage in the spiritual journey towards Easter Sunday. Each Sunday, from February 22 through March 29, we will explore where and how we experience God in our lives on this journey. In addition we will once again have our Wednesday evening Taize services @ 6:30pm led by John Miller (from February 25-March 25). These services will provide a peaceful, peace-filled space for us to encounter God in prayer and music. Following each Wednesday evening service all are invited to join in an “ADULT CONFIRMATION” discussion. We will discuss a different topic every Wednesday during Lent beginning at 7:00pm. Topics will include Baptism, Confirmation, Communion, Story of Peace United Church of Christ and The United Church of Christ, and what it means to be called to serve. There are a lot of other incredible new opportunities beginning in February. On Sunday, February 1, our own Thomas McLaurin will be preaching. Many of you know Thomas from his incredible singing voice, but after a little “encouraging” he agreed to preach on February 1. We are also looking forward to a wonderful Sunday on February 8, where we will hear from our ACTS Bible Study participants, as they share their experiences engaging with these scriptures. On February 15 we will be kicking off the Capital Funds Campaign to raise funds for our renovation and expansion plans. Our theme for the Capital Funds Campaign is: Footsteps to the Future: Faith, Fellowship, Family! February is just the beginning of so many awesome things, so ….. get ready, set… and People of Peace – START YOUR ENGINES! Let the world hear the radical Good News of the ministry that takes place from this place!
