The Director’s Court “Change is the only constant in life.”-Heraclitus
With constant changes and continuous adjustments in my life, I am also
drawn to traditions. Traditions create a sense of belonging and certainty.
Some traditions can be extravagant milestone birthday trips or more frequent
-like story time before bed. One of my favorite daily traditions is my daughter
making my coffee drink each morning before I drive her carpool to school – a
future Dutch Bros. barista in the making!

Secondly, we launched the new Recreation Management Software (RMS)

Our family picked up a tradition that lapsed last summer. While at Anthropologie, a favorite shop of mine, I
bought a book that provides daily prompts with space to write responses for each member of my family for
three years. At dinner, we answer a daily question and catch up on any we missed. What animal do you feel
like? Where would you like to visit? With a 7 and a 13-year old in the house, the responses provide a telling
window into their thoughts and current demeanor. As we started repeating prompts from last year, I became
acutely aware of the way that they are changing and growing.
As the hustle and bustle of practices, homework, work, meetings and other duties whirl around us, traditions

Youth Spring Leagues
youth Rugby
Grades K-8
Rugby is one of the greatest sports ever created and it is the fastest growing sport in
America. It is played all over the world and is
played throughout the U.S. Even our hometown, Redding California, has had a rugby
team since the 1970’s. The US won the
Olympic gold medal in the 1924 games. The rugby World Cup will be
held next year and is the third largest sporting event behind the Olympics
and the soccer World Cup.
JUNIOR GIANTS BASEBALL
Boys and Girls Ages 5-13 years
Rugby will be part of the 2016 Olympics in a Rio De Janeiro Brazil, so
now is a great time to learn the basics of rugby. The Shasta Highlanders
rugby club players will be teaching a non-tackle form of Rugby with the
goal of teaching the rules, tactics and fun of this game. Now is a great
time to learn rugby with all the opportunities coming up to see it on TV.
And additionally, since most colleges and universities have rugby teams
that are made up of players that are just learning the sport, this is a great
opportunity for the kids that do this activity to get a head start on getting
on a college team. It is also a good start on a path to fitness and fun for
life as many club teams found throughout the US have players that continue playing into their 60’s.
This FREE program is made possible by the Giants Community Fund
and the City of Redding. Summer baseball for boys and girls 5-13 years
of age (age as of July 1, 2015) promotes skill and character development in a recreational atmosphere. This instructional baseball program
features the Four Bases of Character Development (integrity, teamwork,
leadership, and confidence) and will require your involvement in summer
reading, healthy eating, and violence prevention. Parent volunteers are
needed to manage and coach teams, and assist with team responsibilities and field/facility maintenance.
Come learn the game of Rugby and develop you skills in ball handling,
passing, kicking, and defensive play; as well as learn the laws of the
game and strategies.
Teams will be formed into the following age groups:
• 5-7 years old* (Tee Ball) *Note: Players must be at least 5 years
old by 7/01/15
• 7-8 years old (Coach Pitch) *Note: This division is for 7 year olds

SUP: Stand Up Paddleboarding
Clinic
Ages 13 to 18
8 and older
Summer Adventures Junior Counselor training is a service learning program for teens that enjoy helping children learn and have fun in a safe
environment. The program offers fun, interactive workshops, games
and activities designed to prepare teens to volunteer and/or work in a
camp environment.
The training will include certifications in:
• First Aid
• CPR
This class is designed as an introduction to the sport. Participants will
learn proper paddling, safety, maneuvers, and familiarize themselves
with Stand-Up Paddleboarding. SUP is an emerging global sport with a
Hawaiian heritage. It utilizes a one-bladed paddle, while standing on a
normal length surfboard. SUP has moved out of the surf zone and into
inland waterways around the country. Flat water SUPing is a healthy,
low-impact, and environmentally friendly paddle sport that appeals to
both the young and the young-at-heart. Space is limited to 10 participants, so pre-registration is required.
• Basic Water Rescue
Training may also include child development, safety, conflict resolution,
body language, planning and leading games, therapeutic recreation
awareness and job interview skills. Participants will have opportunities
to plan activities and practice their new skills with campers in Summer
Adventures.
