Relay For Life is Coming
Relay for Life, an
organization of American Cancer Society, has
kicked off for 2015 and
teams are already raising money for the fight
against cancer, a severe health challenge that
does - or will - affect all of us at some time in
our lives. Many of us have lost family or loved
ones to cancer. Many of our friends, family and
neighbors are fighting right now. It’s time we all
worked to find a cure.
Port St. John Relay for Life will happen on
April 18, 2015, but the teams are raising money
now. If you have been approached by a team to
help, please do. If you would like to start a team
and need help or information, or if you would like
to join a team, call Randy Rodriguez at 863-7499.
You don’t have to spend the night, you don’t have
to walk laps, but it is a lot of fun! And you get to
meet a lot of great people.
The website for the Port St. John event is:
www.relayforlife.org. Use 32927 for location.
Hello Port St. John!
Relay for Life time has come again! Our event
this year will take place at Space Coast High
School on April 18th. This event is organized
every year at participating centers across the
country to join together and raise money in the
fight against cancer.
At our Relay event, around 9 o'clock at night
we have our Luminaria Ceremony. This is the
point of the night where every sits down to remember the real reason why we are at Relay; the
people. Together, we remember those we have
lost to cancer, and honor those who have beaten
it, or are still fighting. For this very special ceremony, several items will be donated:
- White paper lunch bags
- Long-reach lighters
- White tea lights
- Canned food
The cans of food will be placed in the bags
as weights for the ceremony and will be donated
to a local food shelter after the event.
All donations will be accepted and greatly
appreciated. Please contact Cassidy Michonski,
Luminary Chair, at [email protected]
to come pick up any donations you have or you
can drop them at the Berkshire Hathaway - The
Property Place office on Fay Blvd. (corner at
Aloha Ave., east of the railroad tracks). Thank
you in advance!
Sincerely in the fight,
Cassidy Michonski,
Luminary Chair, Relay for Life

Good Day! by Maureen Rupe
Liquid Natural Gas
On December 18th, I attended a meeting with
East Coast Industries (ECI). Those attending the
meeting were Matt Davis with East Coast Industries, Attorney Kendall Moore and Space Coast
Airport Board of Directors Chair Gerry Sansom.
We talked for a couple of hours on a Liquefied
Natural Gas (LNG) project planned for the south
east corner of the airport from about 2000 feet
north of King’s Highway just to the west side of
the railroad tracks. The call it the TICO Logistics
Center, and current plans are for a 250,000 square
foot expanded logistics and warehouse facility;
what they called a logistics support network,
which consisted of containers on truck or rail
and a small-scale alternative fueling facility for
production of a LNG production and distribution platform. The facility is supposed to create
40 full-time jobs and $1.6 million in Titusville
property taxes (ad valorem).
What is LNG? LNG is natural gas liquefied by lowing its temperature to 260 degrees
Fahrenheit below zero. As a liquid, natural gas
is a non-toxic, non-corrosive liquid that will not
contaminate soil or groundwater. LNG has been
in use for more than 50 years, and one of the
purposes planned is to increase use for transportation instead of using diesel. In comparison to
diesel, LNG is stable and safe to transport, and
produces significantly less emissions: 30% less
CO2 (Carbon Oxide), 80% less NOx (Nitrogen
Oxide), 99% less SO2 (Sulfur) and less particulate matter (soot).
The Natural Gas will be provided by an interstate pipeline, cooled and purified (CO2, water
and heavy hydrocarbons removed). LNG will be

loaded and stored in approved shipping containers, and moved by either truck or rail.
ECI plans to have a natural buffer around their
new facility. There are plans for a 120 foot gas
conditioning stack on the property which is 20
feet shorter than the transmission towers that run
beside Kings Highway and 200 feet shorter than
the OUC smokestacks. They are addressing all
environmental concerns including relocating all
gopher tortoises that are on the property.
ECI has been very transparent and have
answered every question asked, which lets the
community know what we are dealing with. This
is a great change from when I’ve talked to the
Port Authority CEO. It makes for better relationships. However, LNG is not without controversy.
Search the internet and you will find a number
of sites citing safety issues with LNG. The few
incidents cited are either overseas or are much
larger than the one currently planned for this location. There are a number of environmentalists
that have asked a number of questions of ECI on
safety. Both the questions and their answers are
shown below:
1. Do you have a Compliance Matrix that
shows how they plan to achieve each 49 CFR
requirement?
We are in the very early phase of project development, specifically the land use approval.
We will begin developing compliance documents
once we have the preliminary design. However,
we will definitely be complying with 49 CFR
Part 193, which regulates LNG facilities. This
federal requirement adopts by reference NFPA
59A 2001 Edition. We will comply with these
requirements, which are the industry standard,
and we shall additionally comply with the 2009

edition of NFPA 59A, which is adopted by the
Florida Fire Prevention Code. The facility will
be designed in compliance with all federal, state
and local safety and environmental requirements.
2. Could we see their Fault Tree Analysis, as
they are usually mandated for low probability of
occurrence - high consequence situations, where
a high consequence event is one that would result
in loss of life and/or very costly property damage
(i.e., a LNG explosion)? A particular goal of a
Fault Tree Analysis is to demonstrate that there
are no single point failure modes that would result
in a catastrophic event.
The process hazard analysis (PHA) is not yet
available, as this will require a well-defined design with at least a final equipment location plan
and final piping and instrumentation diagrams
(P&ID’s) established. Once these are completed,
a Hazard and Operability Study (HAZOP) will be
completed. The HAZOP process will definitely
ensure that there will be multiple layers of protection to prevent each potential single point of failure from resulting in a high consequence event.
On January 12th, Florida Today published an
opinion titled “Matt Reed: Worry about this fuel,
Titusville,” where Mr. Reed played on safety
concerns citing accidents overseas or at facilities
much larger than what is said to be planned by
ECI. HIs opinion is listed in the references. ECI
sent me the following answers prepared by their
Neptune Fire Protection (Safety Engineer) to Mr.
Reed’s Opinion:
“LNG is an extremely stable fluid; and the
natural gas vapors that form from the evaporation
of LNG are very stable and predictable.
Any hydrocarbon fuel has an inherent element
of danger because they are all flammable. How-

ever, the hazards of LNG production, transport
and storage are very easily mitigated.
The industry's safety record reflects this with
not one fatality in the past 35 years in the US.
LNG has had a far better track record for
safety than gasoline, which is far more widely
used by the general public.
Liquefied Natural Gas Plant has an OPEN
DESIGN.
LNG facilities are designed to restrict LNG
spills to very small areas and deep pits.
LNG fires are simple to extinguish. Facilities
are required to be designed with safe separation
distances in fire scenarios, and it is often a preferable strategy to just let them burn themselves out.
LNG does evaporate at normal atmospheric
temperatures, but it occurs very slowly. For example, a one foot deep pool of LNG takes about
10 hours to evaporate.
LNG pool fires are very easily managed by
first responders. Dry chemical extinguishers
extinguish LNG pool fires quite well, actually.
For example, at Texas A&M fire school students
get to practice extinguishing 10’x10’ LNG pool
fires with 20 pound fire extinguishers.
LNG vapor ignitions are characterized as very
“lazy” in terms of how they burn, compared to
similar hydrocarbon fires like gasoline, for example. This is because the vapors are very cold
and the energy density of natural gas is only about
70 percent that of diesel or gasoline vapors.
LNG vapor ignitions are very slow and difficult to form a major overpressure (a.k.a. explosion). This type of overpressure is only possible
with confinement of the vapors in a closed area,
but LNG plants are always designed carefully to
be open and ventilated in all areas where LNG
can possibly spill or ignitable vapors can travel,
so that there is no chance of explosion.
LNG facilities are designed to limit pool spill
sizes in deep pits and with safe separation distances determined by thermal radiation modeling.
In the 19 documented major accidents in the
US of LNG tankers, not one fire has occurred.
The double-walled tanker design used in the US
has an excellent safety record.

US safety standards (namely NFPA 59A) have
proven successful in mitigating LNG hazards,
and foreign incidents are typically the result of
lesser safety standards being employed.”
This will go before Titusville City Council
on January 27th for a Conditional Use Permit
(CUP) for LNG. The airport is already zoned
Heavy Industrial. Unfortunately, I met with ECI
too late to let the community know, but there are
many permits ECI must go through that will give
opportunity for opinions to be heard. Titusville
City Council will pass this for economic reasons
and the property taxes it will bring. The city will
benefit just as the county does with FPL taxes.
Florida Power and Light has a huge tank
of oil, just in case natural gas pipeline flow is
stopped for some reason. ECI is in discussion
with FPL so (LNG) could be stored and used
at the FPL power plant instead of oil. I like that
idea as we can all remember the soot which fell
on our community when oil was being burnt at
FPL. As long as it IS safe, we must clean our air

where possible. We need to ensure we use fuel
with less particulates (soot), carbon monoxide,
sulfur oxides, nitrogen oxides, toxic metals that
we still live with every day with more and more
cars and trucks on the roads, not discounting our
power plants. We need an alternative safe energy
source other than oil and the pollution it brings.
I’d rather have solar or wind for an alternative
energy, but realistically it’s not efficient enough
at this time, so I’ll support natural gas as I did
with Florida Power and Light.

Brevard County Building Report
December was a great month for building in
Brevard County. Single family home permits
building activity went up from the previous
month, and December’s single family home
numbers (52) were more than any count for
December since at least back to 2008 when the
numbers started being reported in their monthly
report. Overall construction values also went
up, ($40,150,865), which was the highest of any
month in 2014, the highest of any December
since at least back to 2008; definitely not any-
thing to complain about, and definitely shows are
moving in the right direction.

Florida Fracking
Fracking is one of the greatest environmental
concerns throughout the United States for the last
few years. A January 4th, 2015 story in the Ocala
Star Banner (Ocala.com) by Merrillee MalwitzJipson and Jim Tatum titled, “Fear over Fracking,” shows fracking is something Floridians
need to start thinking about very seriously. The
story pointed out some concerns that may be being hidden from Florida residents. According to
the story, “Florida Department of Environmental
Protection chief of mining, Calvin Alvarez, says
that fracking is not a “factor” in South Florida,
and Ed Garrett, DEP Section Administrator, says
that we don’t frack in Florida.” But the story goes
on that at least the DEP Section Administrator
may not be quite telling the truth. The article
stated, “In the past five years, there have been
37 drilling applications granted and of these, 16
have been granted in the past year.
Seems there is also a unique type of fracking
in Florida due to the type of limestone in our
area of the country. It is called acidizing, or acid
fracking. This is because Florida oil/gas is found
in our mineralized limestone dolomite and calcite
cement instead of the shale rock where oil and gas
is found in other parts of the United States. This
acidizing uses chemicals to dissolve our rocks
instead of smashing them. And after reading an
April 24, 2014 Tampa Bay Times article titled,
“Texas oil company used acid in Florida wildlife
sanctuary soil, denies fracking,” from last year
when Hughes Oil was fined for a well in the Everglades, apparently oil companies have been using
this acidizing in Florida for quite a few years.
The article stated, “Although the whole process
is similar to fracking, Blackmon called it an "acid
stimulation treatment," which he said, "is used
very commonly in Florida." David Blackmond
is the spokesman for Hughes Oil Company that
was the center of the controversy.
Apparently there are about 81 different compounds that are used for acidizing and although
quite a few have little known on their health hazards, there are at least a few that are known carcinogens. These are methanol, toluene, benzene,
sulfuric acid, formaldehyde, xylene, hydrogen
fluoride, crystalline silica naphthalene and lead.
The article also stated that Duke University
had a recent study that showed that 92% of the
fluids remained in the ground after fracking. If
that is the case, why would we want something
like melted limestone to remain in the ground
near our drinking water, probably the most
important resource we have in Florida? We are
already finding issues in the Indian River Lagoon
on what happens when you don’t take care of water, so what will happen if we let these chemicals,
oil and gas mix with our drinking water in the
Florida Aquifer? To tell the truth, I’m surprised
that it took fracking being done around the rest
of the country to bring to light what we have
been doing for a number of years here in Florida.
All is not completely lost, as there is a pending bill in this year’s legislature to ban Fracking
in Florida. Senate Bill 166 would ban hydraulic
fracking in Florida and would take effect in July,
2015 if it passes the legislature and is not vetoed
by the Governor.
We must all support Senate Bill 166 and the
companion House Bill to ban fracking in Florida
(any type of fracking). Water is too important
for us not to protect it. We cannot manufacture
water. We are drinking the same water the cavemen drank. The waters in Florida are already
impaired. We are already finding out locally that
cleaning up the problem is much more expensive
than preventing it in the first place.

MONTHLY TAX UPDATE
January is now passed and we’re going full
steam ahead into 2015. You may as well expect
tax preparation fees to increase due to an email
IRS sent to tax professionals titled “Health Care
Law Brings Changes to IRS Tax Forms.” Most
of the following is direct from the email.
“This year, there are some changes to tax
forms related to the Affordable Care Act. Along
with a few new lines on existing forms, there
will also be two new forms that will need to
be included with some tax returns. While most
taxpayers will simply need to check a box on
their tax return to indicate they had health coverage for all of 2014, there are also new lines on
Forms 1040, 1040A, and 1040EZ related to the
health care law. To help navigate these changes,
taxpayers and their tax professionals should
consider filing their return electronically. Using
tax preparation software is the best and simplest
way to file a complete and accurate tax return, as
it guides individuals and tax preparers through
the process and does all the math.
There are a variety of electronic filing options, including free volunteer assistance, IRS
Free File for taxpayers who qualify, commercial
software and professional assistance. Here is
information about the new forms and updates to
the existing forms: Form 8965, Health Coverage Exemptions, will be completed to report
a Marketplace-granted coverage exemption or
claim an IRS-granted coverage exemption on
the return. Use the worksheet in the Form 8965
instructions to calculate the shared responsibility payment. Form 8962, Premium Tax Credit,
will be used to reconcile advance payments of
the premium tax credit and to claim this credit
on the tax return. Additionally, if individuals
purchased coverage through the Health Insurance
Marketplace, they should receive Form 1095-A,
Health Insurance Marketplace Statement, which
will help complete Form 8962.
Here are the entries you will find helpful when
completing the Form 1040. On Line 46: Enter
advance payments of the premium tax credit
that must be repaid; on Line 61: Report health
coverage and enter individual shared responsibility payment; and on Line 69: If eligible, claim
net premium tax credit, which is the excess of
allowed premium tax credit over advance credit
payments.
For Form 1040A, on Line 29: Enter advance
payments of the premium tax credit that must be

enter individual shared responsibility payment;

The Funeral...
While walking along the sidewalk in front of
his church, our minister heard the intoning of a
prayer that nearly made his collar wilt. Apparently, his 5-year-old son and his playmates had
found a dead robin. Feeling that proper burial
should be performed, they had secured a small
box and cotton batting, then dug a hole and
made ready for the disposal of the deceased. The
minister’s son was chosen to say the appropriate
prayers and with sonorous dignity intoned his
version of what he thought his father always said:
“Glory be unto the Father, and unto the Son, and
into the hole he goes.” (I want this line used at
my funeral!)

When the power of love overcomes the
love of power, the world will know peace.
I’m very blessed and so excited to be part of
“United Space Coast Crafters Co-op.” The shop
is celebrating 25 years in business. You have
no idea how incredible this is, considering the
shop has 30 – 35 different crafters running the
business. It’s very unique. 25 years of different
people with different opinions and ideas of running a business, but it’s been done!!
There are two ladies in the shop who have
been there since the beginning, 25 years ago. My
neighbor (of almost 25 years, here in the Groves)
got into the shop first. I won’t say I was jealous,
I was very happy for her and was anxious to get
in myself. Even though she and I both do paper
crafts, we have different styles and when the
opportunity became available, I jumped on it.
I have been in the shop for a year now. I volunteered to be the scheduler, making sure there
are two people each day running the shop. We
are open 7 days a week, usually from 10 – 5, but
we stay open later if there is a play running at
the Cocoa Playhouse.
Please come and visit our shop. We have very
talented crafters and I’m sure you will enjoy see-
ing what we have to offer.
We are located right next to the Cocoa Playhouse on Brevard Ave. in Cocoa.

Looking For New Chair for Thunder
Over the Indian River
The 2014 coordinator for Thunder Over the Indian River,
the fireworks show to Port St. John, has retired and we stand
to lose the event unless we find a new group or person to
sponsor the event. We’ve had the last 14 years with dedicated
friends in Thunder Over the Indian River. We’ve worn out a
lot of good people along the way. Our children who watched
the Community Blast shows now bring their own children out
to see the fireworks. If you or someone you know would like
to carry the event forward, please contact Tia by email at [email protected] to get more
information. Dragonworks, the fireworks contractor, is still available.
Scholarship Application
Jess Parrish Medical Foundation (JPMF) is now accepting scholarship applications from high school seniors
who plan to pursue a career in a medical or healthcare
field related to human health. Scholarship amounts range
from $500 to $1,500 and recipients will be announced
in May, 2015.
Scholarships will be awarded to graduating high
school seniors who reside in the Parrish Medical Center
service area (SR 528 north to the Brevard/Volusia county
line - all of Port St. John and most of the Groves). Students must have a 3.0 grade point average or greater,
based on a 4.0 scale. Students who have been awarded
a JPMF scholarship in previous years may reapply, provided they are continuing in a medical/healthcare field
related to human health and have maintained at least a
3.0 grade point average.
High school students who attend Astronaut HS, Space
Coast HS and Titusville HS may obtain an application
from the Guidance Office at their school. Others may
obtain an application by calling JPMF at 321-269-4066
or by visiting parrishmedfoundation.com/scholarships.
The deadline for applications is Friday, March 13, 2015.

Library Director Leaving
To the denizens of Port St. John:
It was truly an honor to serve the Port St.
John community for the past year and a half. I
loved getting to know you and serving as Director of a true, close-knit community library. I
will miss all of the friends, acquaintances and
friendly faces I have had the pleasure of meeting here and I wish you all the best. I have a
new position at the Evans Library on the F.I.T.
campus close to my home in Melbourne.
Best wishes and Happy Reading in 2015!

Rose’s Room
Flowers, candy, jewelry…One wonders what
old Saint Valentine would think of his day in
these times? While I certainly have no objection
to receiving shiny baubles, (tennis bracelet-Zale’s
Jewelers), I think over the years the best gifts
have been free, (or very cheap).
The Valentine’s Day that fell when I was 8
months pregnant with my fourth child found me
much less than romantic. Backaches, exhaustion,
swollen everything was exacerbated by three
young children and a husband who worked two
jobs.
Money being tight and hours spent helping
little people pick just the perfect card for each
friend and little fingers sign each card did little
to help put me in a Hallmark mood.
The holiday fell on a school day. As I raced to
get everyone dressed and fed, visions of “Someday When The Kids Are Grown” romantic dinners intermingled with:
“Is Kim wearing matching shoes?” “Did
Darlene finish her homework?” “I hope Cindy’s
teacher likes the card we spent so much time on.”
Finding a beautiful card and a small box of
candy from my best beau carefully placed in the
cereal box brightened my day considerably, but
the handmade coupon for one day of total child
care gave me the Vapors. I immediately began
making plans for a long leisurely afternoon at
the beach alone with a good book and that box
of candy.
The big day arrived along with itchy spots
and a fever on the three year old. By the following Sunday, all three kids were scratching and
whining. The third Sunday found my husband
with a fever. The one after that I was in labor. I
think you get the drift; the coupon became the
impossible dream.
I still have that unused coupon, but no need
for child care. I wonder if it could be traded in on
something more useful? (Tennis bracelet-Zale’s
Jewelers.)
That day on the beach with a book is still a
great idea, especially if the beach is in Bahia
Honda. The early bird-senior special dinner can
be romantic depending on the company. I may
even be coerced into sharing a box of candy with
my best beau…
However I do think age may have dulled my
Ever-Lovins’ sense of romance.
I dropped into the pharmacy superstore the
day after Christmas and stood watching the clearance sale Singing Christmas Tree doing its little
thing nestled right next to a singing Valentine’s
Day bear doing its little thing, both bearing signs
touting them as “The Perfect Gift!” Someone
should tell them the perfect gift comes from the
heart not the wallet.
My children, (when they were younger), and
grandchildren display the right spirit. I have
a treasure trove of clay plates with tiny hands
outlined and jewelry boxes with crooked hinges,
paintings, potholders and Popsicle stick creations
of all kinds.
However, my now adult children and my husband are horses of different colors. The rivalry
between them when it comes to gifts for dear old
mom is getting intense.
It all started a few birthdays ago when someone near and dear to my heart asked me what
kind of gift I would like. I told him to surprise
me and that he should know me well enough to
be able to come up with something nice. Then I
made the mistake of adding, “Something with a
few karats.” We had the live white rabbit he came
home with for 3 years. I named him Diamond.
With Mother’s day approaching, I mentioned
to one of my children I would like something that
came from a shell on the ocean floor and a few
days later opened the door to a perplexed delivery person handing me a coupon for a bushel of
oysters and a rose.
The Easter my husband bought a power drill
and tried to sell me on the idea it was really for me
because he would be spending less time screwing
pieces of wood together so there would be more
time for us to spend together will be remembered
in infinity.
I must admit I have recently been considering
how ungrateful I have been in not reciprocating
for all these fine presents, and since Valentine’s
Day is expressly for letting your loved ones
know exactly what is in your heart, I think I will
go shopping.

Conundrum
Bernice G. Jackson Park, 4201 North US Hwy 1, Sharpes.
The definition of the word Conundrum is:
Something that is puzzling or confusing. Here
are six Conundrums of socialism in the United
States of America:
1) America is capitalist and greedy - yet half
of the population is subsidized.
2) Half of the population is subsidized - yet
they think they are victims.
3) They think they are victims - yet their representatives run the government.
4) Their representatives run the government
- yet the poor keep getting poorer.
5) The poor keep getting poorer - yet they
have things that people in other countries only
dream about.
6) They have things that people in other countries only dream about - yet they want America
to be more like those other countries.
Think about it! And that, my friends, pretty
much sums up the USA in the 21st Century.
Free people are not equal. Equal people are
not free. These next sentences tell you a lot about
the direction of our current government and cultural environment:
1) We are advised to NOT judge ALL Muslims by the actions of a few lunatics, but we are
encouraged to judge ALL gun owners by the
actions of a few lunatics.
2) Seems we constantly hear about how Social
Security is going to run out of money. But we
never hear about welfare or food stamps running
out of money. What's interesting is the first group
worked for their money, but the second didn't.

Fruit From the Groves, Cont.
and his father, Pastor Don Adkins, developed this
annual project. Nine homes in the Cocoa, Canaveral Groves and Port St. John areas got new coats
of paint after they were pressure washed. Overgrown landscaping was also taken care of as well
as any minor structure situations that needed to be
addressed before the painting began. A group of
volunteers also tended to the needs of our Church
building. There was a kitchen crew that prepared
breakfast on Saturday and Sunday mornings.
Lunches were packed to go out to the various work
sites and a banquet was held Sunday evening honoring those we were able to help. There were donations of food and materials from local businesses
and restaurants which helped greatly. All this work
was done at no cost to the homeowners. Thanks to
all the team leaders and their crews for a job well
done. This program is part of our Christ Central
Church Community Outreach Ministry. Loving
God and loving people. Again, a big thanks goes
out to everyone for making this worthwhile event
to become a yearly project.
Dedei and I finally had a chance to try the new
Woody's Bar-B-Q up on US 1. No surprise there.
The food was great and the service was spot on. I
took Jeff Pitt’s advice and tried the Potachos. It was
a mouth burning, artery clogging, make you want to
slap your MaMa wonderful dish. We will certainly
do that one again. If you haven't been there yet, put
it on your list of things to do. It has been completely
remodeled and the atmosphere was great.
Don't forget that someone special this Valentine’s Day. A card, flowers, candy; may I suggest
Grimaldi's on US 1 in south Rockledge, dinner or
just a simple statement, " I LOVE YOU " will suffice. If things at your house are anything like mine,
IF MAMA AIN'T HAPPY, THEN NOBODY IS
HAPPY. Just a little food for thought.
I am sure that we all have someone out there
who is not feeling well or in distress. I ask for
prayers and good thoughts for all who need them.
You would be surprised how a smile and a hand
shake or a hug can lift someone's spirit. Pay it
forward.

FEBRUARY, 2O15: 2/12 - CGHOA MONTHLY MEETING; 2/14 - VALENTINE’S DAY; 2/16
- PRESIDENTS DAY
I would like to take a few lines and thank all
those residents who put up Holiday lights and
displays during the Christmas Season. They were
a delight for all who got to see them. I appreciate
all the effort and hard work that went into setting
everything up, then the monumental work that it
took to take it all down and put it away for next
year. Thanks again to all for going that extra mile.
I posted the announcement on FB, Canaveral
Groves Bulletin Board, about the passing of Mr. Joe
Stadnick. Joe was the first President of the Canaveral Groves HOA back in the day of the dirt roads
and we had to watch television by candlelight. I had
met Joe on several occasions over the years but I
never got to interact with him when he was CGHOA President. Long time resident of the Groves

and activist, Mrs. Centi Thomson remembers him
well. I understand the the HOA meetings could get
quite colorful. This was back when we were still
meeting at the Four Communities Fire Department.
Prayers and good thoughts go out to the family in
this time of joy and sorrow. Rest well, old friend.
Speaking of the Fire Department, I would like
to thank all the men and women of the Fire Service and the Sheriff’s Dept. for their response to
the recent incident at the south end of Pine Street.
Unfortunately, the structure was a total loss and as
of this writing, the cause has not been determined.
The good news is that there was no loss of life.
The January meeting was well attended and I
would like to welcome Mr. and Mrs. Ray Fehrenbach to the Groves. We hope that ya'll will take
an active part in our Association. President Paul
Kroning has been working very hard on updating
our By-laws. This has been a monumental under-
taking and he has done a fantastic job. There will
be another reading on the revisions and then a vote.
A Nominating Committee has been formed to
put together a slate of officers for next year. The
committee members are, Mr. Ed Silva, Mr. Conley
Jordan and myself. If you are interested in becoming an officer in CGHOA, just call me, Bill Cannon,
at 321-632-7483.
It has also come to my attention that a well
dressed white female has been begging in the area
of Alan Sheppard, Atlanta, Knoxville and the BP
station. If you see her or have an encounter with
her, dial 911 and report her. Let the professionals
do their job.
