FROM THE HOD: FOUNDATION
PHASE’S DESK
Our school is diverse and made up of girls
with different languages, religions, race
and cultural beliefs. It is important that
we get to know one another and show an
interest in each other.
Our school has identified common core
values that unite us and give us direction.
These are humility, discipline, respect,
consideration, integrity, co-operation,
compassion, responsibility and honesty.
We strive to create an atmosphere of
courtesy, kindness and respect.
These values are affirmed and rewarded at
Assemblies and as Merit awards.
Our values provide us with a code of
behaviour, a form of rules to abide by.
Teachers model these values and expect
students to follow suite.
I firmly believe in Mahatma Gandhi’s
words:
“You must be the change that you
would like to see in the world”.
Our values give us a foundation for
teaching and learning and ensure a
positive school climate.
I would like to give advice on how to be the
best Holy Rosary Girl:

Good manners are imperative.
Show respect towards the staff and
your peers.






Do community service. Offer your
services to the less fortunate,
display a caring attitude. Show
compassion towards the needy. Be
thankful for your blessings.
Co-operate with everyone at your
school. Discussion and debate is
welcome but accept rules that have
been made.
Be tolerant of others’ differences.
Our school prides itself on
accepting and celebrating one
another. Rather enquire about
their differences and do not judge.
Endeavour to give of your best at
all times and do things right the
first time. You need to be
committed to your school and your
own education. Strive to keep on
improving all the time. Challenge
yourself to do better. Do this for
yourself, not for some external
motivator.
Appreciate the sacrifices your
parents are making by sending you
to this excellent school. Be
responsible for your learning, study
hard and always do your best. The
teachers have your best interests at
heart and value you.
Use the opportunities afforded to
you at this school. Develop your
potential and be the best YOU. Ask
if you need help. Use every
opportunity to learn something
new. Step out of your “comfort
zone”. Education and learning are
two of the most important
ingredients to becoming all that you






can be. How open you are to
learning will help determine your
path in life.
Compete with yourself and your
peers. This is healthy and
motivating. Accept defeat and
acknowledge victory graciously.
Keep moving ahead and set your
goals high. Believe in yourself.
Love your school and be loyal to it.
Ensure it is always neat and clean,
and is a place of beauty. Appreciate
the resources and facilities and
treat them with respect. Be
considerate and leave them as you
would like to find them.
Look forward to coming to school.
Be punctual. Wear your uniform
with pride.
Set goals on how you want to spend
your time and energy. Lead a
balanced life.
Know your strengths and
weaknesses. Be proud of who you
are and what you have already
achieved so far.
Learning is not a spectator sport.
The only real failure in life is the
failure to try. Never give up trying
to fulfil your dreams. Everyone who
tries will succeed and if you haven’t
succeeded then you have not
reached the end.
In 2009, President Barack Obama delivered
an incredibly inspiring speech. It
commenced as follows:
“But at the end of the day, we can have the
most dedicated teachers, the most
supportive parents, and the best schools in
the world – and none of it will matter
unless all of you fulfill your responsibilities.
Unless you show up to those schools; pay
attention to those teachers; listen to your
parents, grandparents and other adults;
and put in the hard work it takes to
succeed.”
The President urged students to take
responsibility for their education and to
find out what they are good at. He
emphasised that whatever students
wanted to do, required an education. The
president believes that problem solving
and critical thinking skills, creativity and
ingenuity are vital for the future. He
encouraged the youth to develop their
talents, skills and intellect not only for
themselves, but for the future of their
country.
What I believe most important in the
President’s address is his view that:
“the circumstances of your life – what you
look like, where you come from, how much
money you have, what you’ve got going on
at home – that’s no excuse for neglecting
your homework or having a bad attitude.
That’s no excuse for talking back to your
teacher, or cutting class, or dropping out of
school. That’s no excuse for not trying.”
I conclude with the student’s pledge:
“I pledge myself to uphold the core values
of Holy Rosary School. To honour the
Code of Conduct, and to obey the school
rules, so that this school is widely
recognised as a Community of Care, and
an Institution of Academic Excellence.”

RELIGIOUS NEWS
THE FEAST OF THE PRESENTATION
On Monday, 2 February, we shall
celebrate the Feast of the Presentation of
Jesus in the temple. This day is known as
Candlemas or the Mass of Candles
because candles are often blessed on this
day. The candles remind us that the
Rabbi Simeon proclaimed Jesus to be “The
Light of the World”, when he was
presented in the temple.
We all know what it is to be without light.
We may wake up in the darkness and
everything seems unfamiliar and scary.
When there is a power cut, we may
stumble over objects and fall. A light
allows us to avoid obstacles and it enables
us to find what we need.
Jesus is that light. He came into the world
to banish the darkness of sin and despair.
He bought the light of hope, goodness and
love. Jesus’ light guides us to make good
choices and do the right thing. Without
the light of Jesus, we fall easily into sin.
On the Feast of the Presentation, we offer
a prayer to Jesus:
Jesus, you are the Light of the World.
We know that you are the Good News
of love and hope in our lives.
We have confidence that your light and
love will get us through any difficult
and dark times.
In your name, we offer this prayer.
Amen.

AFTERNOON CLUBS
All Afternoon Clubs commence next week;
from Monday, 2 February. Please check
the dates carefully on your programme, as
there are some breaks due to mid-term.
NOTICE TO ALL PARENTS REGARDING
PICK-UP AND DROP-OFF AND PARKING
As at all schools dropping off and picking
up can often be problematic, causing
much stress for all involved including the
school’s neighbours. In an effort to
alleviate the myriad of problems
experienced, we would once again like to
outline the designated areas available for
parking, and highlight areas of concern.
RECEPTION YEAR: There is a gate off St
Anne’s road where the students can be
dropped and collected. It is ONLY for
Grade 0 (Reception year) and not for
any other grades. Please adhere to this
as it is causing major problems in St
Anne’s road.
FOUNDATION PHASE: Parking is in the
church parking lot – please enter at the
first gate into the church parking lot, i.e.
the main entrance into the church parking
lot, and exit at the second gate in front of
the church building – this ensures much
smoother traffic flow. Please be sure to
lock your cars and check the handles – we
have had incidents of remote jamming.
Please respect the no parking signs in the
car park, allowing Father Leathem easy
movement to and from his home.
ST DAVID’S GATE: The turning circle at
the end is not for parking – please do not
park there. It causes major congestion.
The above three gates are open from
07h00 to 07h45 and again from 13h00 to
14h30.
Thereafter all these gates are closed and
entry is through the Main Reception.
MAIN SCHOOL PARKING IN HORWOOD
STREET: This is for all students
We appeal to you not to park across the
road at the School of Merit – and
especially not to park across their
driveways. They too have all their parents
dropping off and picking up and we need
to be mindful of that.
This gate is manned from06h30 am to
17h30 pm during school terms. It is open
for drop off and collection at peak times.
HIGH SCHOOL GATE: This gate is open
every morning from 07h00 to 07h45. On
Monday to Thursday it is open from
14h15 – 15h00. On Friday afternoon it is
open from 13h00 – 13h45. This is for
pedestrian use only – no vehicular
entrance.
VINER ROAD GATE: This gate is for staff
only until 15h00, after which After School
Centre parents may enter there. Prior to
15h00, all After School Centre students
are to be collected via the Main Reception.
Please exit through the Horwood Street
gate, NOT Viner road gate. Please drive
slowly and do not park in any Staff
designated parking spots. Parents picking
up children from late classes or music
extra-murals may also enter through
Viner Road gate.
Please do not stop or park in the blind
corner on Viner road. We have had some
close calls there and ask that you park on
the straight road but not in the corner.
Also please respect our neighbours in
Viner Road and St David’s Roads – do not
park across their driveways.
The small pedestrian gate will open at
07h00 and close at 07h45 and open after
school from 13h00 to 14h45.
CAR STICKERS
Please ensure all cars collecting students
carry the Holy Rosary School car sticker.
These are available from the Office at R5
each.
On Sunday morning we had a very special
Morning Prayer at the open air chapel
next to the river.
After breakfast we had a last session of
choir practice that turned out to be so
beautiful and special - a magical memory
that will inspire us to new heights this
coming year.
Thank you to our parents who let their
precious daughters go on camp, as well as
our wonderful teaching team who came
along and assisted during the weekend:
Mrs Francis, Mrs Phillips (Bonny), Mrs
Baart, Mrs Dos Santos, Mrs Bibis and Mrs
Vitale.

MUSIC NEWS
Senior Choir Camp at Parnassus Farm:
24-25 January 2015
The Senior Choir girls have been very
excited about the choir camp ever since
they were advised about it at the end of
2014, especially going to Parnassus farm
in Magaliesburg!
On Saturday morning we waved good bye
to the parents at Shanahan Park and set
off to Magaliesburg. The first thing we
noticed and felt, was the heat! Oh my!
Once everybody had unpacked, we
welcomed the new choir members and the
Grade 4’s who have just joined the choir.
After the choir got set up into three voice
parts, the Music staff introduced a few
new songs and soon the sound of
wonderful voices filled the air. This
continued and even improved over the two
days!
There were some fun activities on
Saturday afternoon – swimming, an
obstacle course and volley ball. Most girls
ended up in the swimming pool, due to
the heat. In the evening, after practice,
Bonny did drumming with groups and the
others got the opportunity to sit next to
the bonfire with a marshmallow treat. The
Grade 7’s introduced the last activity for
the evening, namely “A minute to win it”.
The girls had so much fun!
