Faith in Action
From the Altar Guild
We are writing to share news of the Discernment and Search process that will begin later this week as we prepare to find and call a new Priest in Charge to Christ Church. There has been no grass growing under our feet since we learned of Fr. Michael’s imminent departure a few weeks ago. Our sadness at the prospect of losing his leadership and spiritual guidance has translated into the energy needed to re‐examine and update our profile to attract someone who can carry on what we’ve begun to envision and im‐
plement – whether it be working with the strategic plan and community partnerships or strengthening our core values through worship and liturgy. As we have promised ourselves repeatedly, we will build on tradition and move into the future together! In Faith, Marcy Dowse and Joan Foot Co‐chairs, Discernment and Search Team 9

Announcements
You have been blessed at Christ Church for so many reasons – you have loved and been loved by the Rev. Michael Way as your Rector, you have experienced a positive relationship with your Rector, you are poised to begin a capital campaign, you have grown in faith, and you are beginning to imagine new ways to identify community partners to even more fully engage God’s mission. Thanks be to God! The good news for you at Christ Church is that you have worked hard on knowing who you are and what you are called to do – and based on conver‐
sations with several of your leaders I completely concur that this transition does not need to be long. Karen Olson, Missioner for Ministry, has already begun to work with the committee charged with discerning and interviewing candidates so that, God willing, you will have a new Priest in Charge in place late Spring or early Summer. Know that my prayers are with you all – you are a healthy, vibrant faith community in Red Wing. Believe that. The Rt. Rev. Brian N. Prior IX Bishop of Minnesota Christ Episcopal Church

A concerned group of citizens, churches and agencies has formed a committee to establish a homeless shelter in Red Wing. HOPE Coalition is a part of this committee. As the committee works toward this goal, HOPE Coalition has agreed to accept and distribute funds so that currently homeless fami‐
lies and individuals are not literally “out in the cold.” Through this effort, from December 2013 to October 2014, HOPE Coalition provided a safe and warm place to stay for 54 people – every homeless person who came to HOPE Coalition for help. The cost to shelter these people was $8,000. Because the number of homeless is increasing, our goal for this “homeless year” (October 2014 through September 2015) is $10,000. To help HOPE Coalition with this cause, Christ Episcopal Church will have a free will offering on February 15th. Page 2

the Bible, but with each other today. We will be the Women at the Well: Gathering, Supporting and Sharing Wisdom. By The Rev. Barbara von Haaren
Have you ever wondered what it might have been like to be alive during the time of Jesus – more than 2000 years ago! And, going even further, what would it have been like to be a woman in those days? Because we do not have much in the line of the history of those days—at least as we understand it today—and because writings in the Bible were written in order to tell us about God and what it meant to be a follower of the One God, we do not have lots of information about the everyday lives of people. And because the ancient times were very much a patriarchal society, the events written in the Bible were written by men and for men. Women were pretty much on the sidelines. This ecumenical Lenten retreat is open to all women and men. Pre‐registration is necessary, however. You may register by email at [email protected], (Please use the word
Retreat in the subject line and be sure to include
your name, email and phone number.) You may also sign up by using the registration form on the posters. There will also be a sign‐up sheet on the bulletin board in the hall at Christ Church in Red Wing. A $10.00 donation is suggested. Lunch will be provided. Annual Meeting
But we do know that 2000 years ago, the women of the small villages in Israel and Judah would gather daily at the local well to draw the necessary water for use in their households. But that gathering was more than drawing water. It was really an early self‐help group. The women who gathered at the well supported each other. They gossiped and shared with each other. They mentored and listened to each other. The Rev. Lindsay Hardin Freeman, Episcopal priest and best selling author, has taken an in‐depth look at the women in the Bible, and using practical story telling techniques, brings to life many of the women we hear about on Sunday mornings. In her books The
Scarlet Cord: Conversations With Godʹs Chosen Women
and Bible Wo m en: All Their Wo rd s and Why They
Matter, she brings each one to life in a way that gives the stories a fresh outlook, and gives us a greater understanding of life so long ago – from Eve in the Garden of Eden, to the women who influenced Paul as he worked to spread the Good News throughout the known world. On Saturday March 7, Lindsay will join us here at Christ Episcopal Church Red Wing for a modern‐day Gathering at the Well. We will begin at 8:30 that morning, and Lindsay will lead us deep into the lives and concerns, the joys and hardships, the needs and the minds of the Biblical women who are our ancestors. With Lindsayʹs help, we will be able to connect not only with the women of Page 4

Posted on January 20, 2015 Episcopal Church in Minnesota | I grew up in a multi‐
cultural context. There were Latinos, Native Americans, Anglos, a small Asian American population and an even smaller African American popula‐
tion. Amidst this diversity, at least as kids, we were part of the same small community. And yet, particularly with time and perspective, racism was unquestionably prevalent. And such is the case in our world today. For over thirty years I have been blessed to be in con‐
versation with some close friends and colleagues who continue to play a critical role in my ever increasing awareness of racism. They have helped me discover my own unaware and unintentional racist behavior, racism in the cultures and context we share, and the systemic racism of the institutions and organizations we are a part of. Recent events in our country have made even the most naive or uninformed in our society aware of the ongoing challenges brought forth around racism in our society. Painful as this increased awareness is, it has also begun to foster a greater desire to hear the stories of those who have (and continue to be) most Special Words
deeply impacted by racism. Amen, Blood, Body, Church, I know for me personally, hearing the stories and the experiences of those whose lives both historically and Fish, Four, Gentle, God, presently are confronted by racism has been trans‐
formative. It is in truly listening that I have subse‐
Hope, Jesus, quently begun to experience the amendment of life, Love, Rabbit, the journey toward healing, and the beginning of Rainbow wholeness. It is for all of us what God commanded, what Martin Luther King dreamed, what Jesus modeled, and what we commit to in our Baptismal Covenant. All the words listed are in the puzzle ‐ left, right, up, down or diagonally. Find each word and circle it. After you have found all the words, use the leftover letters in the correct order to form the mystery answer February 2015

Dear Friends in Christ, Thank you for your continuous support in publiciz‐
ing current information. Please place the following information in your Sunday bulletin and/or in your monthly newsletter. Family Caregiver Support Group Nearly 7 million American caregivers commute long
‐distance to assist an older relative, and one to two‐
thirds of caregivers are employed outside their home. 
Nearly 1 out of every 4 American house‐
holds is involved in providing care to 50 years or older family members. 
85% of home care is provided by family members and friends. 
80% feel a great deal of stress 
60% experience physical strain, headaches, anxiety and depression If you (or a family member) are a caregiver and some of these symptoms sound familiar, you may be in need of support and good self‐care. Faith in Action in Red Wing has a family caregiver support group that meets on the fourth Thursday of each month at Pier 55 (Red Wing Area Senior Center) at 1:00 pm. Faith in Action
By Gordie Gieseke
Your volunteering choice may be to provide trans‐
portation. My first assignment was to meet a gentle‐
man at his home and drive him to Walmart, where he climbed into an electric cart, with me walking behind from his prescription pick‐up to hardware, clothing, fabric, office supplies, groceries and, finally, the battery display. His cart was then full. I chuckled to myself all the way as he had no shopping list – I want to learn to do that. We enjoyed a chat on the way back to his residence. Time for the trip: 1 hour, 18 minutes. I look forward to my next call to action. Page 8
From the Altar Guild
Jeannette Wilson Directress
As the Altar Guild prepares for the Lenten Season, you will see some subtle changes in the Sanctuary! Lent begins on Ash Wednesday (February 18th), the seventh Wednesday before Easter. Its name comes from the ancient practice of placing ashes on worship‐
pers’ heads or foreheads as a sign of humility before God, a symbol of mourning and sorrow at the death that sin brings to the world. Ash Wednesday is a som‐
ber reflection on what needs to change in our lives if we are to be fully Christian. Have you ever wondered what the ashes were or where they came from? Well, they are produced from the burning of the palm leaves that were used on the pre‐
vious Palm Sunday, the day that begins the final week of Lent. Also, beginning on Ash Wednesday, you will see that the hangings and church decorations will be more “simplistic.” The color for Lent is purple. This color symbolizes the pain and suffering leading up to the crucifixion of Jesus as well as the suffering of humani‐
ty and the world under sin. However, it is also the col‐
or of royalty, and so anticipates through the suffering and death of Jesus the coming resurrection and hope of newness that will be celebrated on Easter Sunday. This year, as last, you will notice that the “ornate” will be replaced with the “humble.” Our crosses will be covered with burlap and tied with a simple purple ribbon. The hangings on the pulpit and lectern will be unpretentious burlap with purple trim. We will be using our pottery chalice and paten rather than the silver. The altar will be a minimally set. The usual candles and flowers will be gone. Simplicity is the order of the day during the forty days of Lent. The “uncomplicated” signifies the austerity of the Season. The floral memorial donations which are contributed during the six weeks of Lent will be used on Easter Sunday. You will notice beautiful Hydrangeas along with the usual Lilies on Easter Sunday. The Hydran‐
geas represent the memorials during the Lenten Sea‐
son. Lent is a spiritual pilgrimage beginning in ashes. It is our journey through darkness making way for the newness of life; the day of celebration representing the fulfillment of our faith as Christians on Easter Sunday. May each of you enjoy a meaningful, prayerful and reflective journey through Lent.
