News of His work on behalf of the sick, the possessed and the poor is beginning to spread, and the Gospel of Mark is filled with the tension of the spreading fame of Jesus’ good works and of His desire of solitude and silence. On February 2nd, we commemorate the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord. Simeon and Anna recognize the Infant Jesus as the Light of the World. We invoke the intercession of St. Blaise as our throats are blessed on February 3rd. St. Paul cautions the Corinthians to be free of anxieties. Our faith as Christians offers all of us moments of peace. We pray that this abiding peace may permeate our lives and the lives of those to whom we minister. The Pantry is in NEED of the following. Meals in a can, Cereal, Oatmeal, Tuna, Soups, Peanut butter & Jelly If you would like to make a monetary donation please make checks payable to: SOCIETY OF ST. VINCENT de PAUL PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS Gracious God, You have called me to life and gifted me in many ways. Through Baptism You have sent me to continue the mission of Jesus by sharing my love with others. Strengthen me to respond to Your call each day. Help me to become all You desire of me. Inspire me to make a difference in others' lives. Lead me to choose the way of life You have planned for me. Open the hearts of all to listen to Your call. Fill all with Your Holy Spirit that we may have listening hearts and the courage to respond to You. Enkindle in my heart and the hearts of others the desire to make the world a better place by serving as Lay Minister, Sister, Priest, Brother or Deacon. Amen. Thank you for praying for vocations. Lowry was inspired to write The Giver after a visit to her aging father, who had lost most of his long-term memory. She realized that without memory, there is no pain—if you cannot remember physical pain, you might as well not have experienced it, and you cannot be plagued by regret or grief if you cannot remember the events that hurt you. At some point in the past the community in The Giver decided to eliminate all pain from their lives. To do so, they had to give up the memories of their society’s collective experiences. Not only did this allow them to forget all of the pain that had been suffered throughout human history, it also prevented members of the society from wanting to engage in activities and relationships that could result in conflict and suffering, and eliminated any nostalgia for the things the community gave up in order to live in total peace and harmony. According to the novel, however, memory is essential. The Committee of Elders does recognize the practical applications of memory—if you do not remember your errors, you may repeat them— so it designates a Receiver to remember history for the community. But as Jonas undergoes his training, he learns that just as there is no pain without memory, there is also no true happiness. LENTEN LONGINGS RETREAT 2015 Lent invites us to a time of prayer, reflection and conversion. Make a six-week retreat led by John Madden, parishioner and certified spiritual director, by exploring the Sunday readings of Lent. The theme of the retreat is For the Life of the World. Participants are called to commit to works of social justice and the ongoing conversion of hearts as we entrust to God our lives and our communities this Lent, praying that they might become – through God’s grace – a gift freely given “for the life of the world.” We will have an administrative session on Tuesday, February 17th to distribute materials. The retreat will begin on Friday, February 20th (two days after Ash Wednesday) and will run for five more sessions: on Thursday, February 26th, Friday, March 6th, Thursday, March 12th, Friday, March 20th and will close on Thursday, March 26th (before Palm Sunday). Sessions run from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. in the school library. There is a charge of $10 for the materials which will be collected at the administrative session. Please register by contacting John at [email protected] or (609) 261-3642 not later than February 4th to allow sufficient time for ordering materials.
