Tech Talk….Internet Safety Cyberbullying and the Law With more social media sites and apps popping up every day and students using these tools at ever-younger ages, it is important for parents to be aware of what their children are doing online. Part of that awareness should include knowledge of your state’s cyberbullying laws. One of the best websites for cyberbullying information is www.cyberbullying.us; they keep an updated document summarizing laws for each state related to bullying, cyberbullying, electronic harassment, school sanctions, and inclusion of off-campus behaviors. You can see that document as well as read about Illinois’s laws at the link below: Summary of cyberbullying laws by state: http://www.cyberbullying.us/Bullying-and-Cyberbullying-Laws.pdf FIFTH GRADE GIRLS BASKETBALL: Girls Basketball will start on Tuesday, February 10th, 5:00-7:00 PM. Your daughter must have a Sports Physical on file with our School nurse. Make fast food more friendly Feeding your children nutritious meals between all your daily activities can be a challenge. While you zoom back and forth between soccer practice, the dance recital, the PTA meeting and picking up the dry cleaning, you’re lucky to find time to grab a meal at the drive-thru. If you must eat on the go, here are some tips to make fast food healthier for you and your family members: Pass on the “value-size.” When you supersize, the size of your fries isn’t the only thing that gets bigger, drinks do too. Skip the sides. Eating a burger or sandwich by itself is often filling enough. If you do want a side, consider ordering a fruit cup or side salad. Most fast food restaurants now offer them. Avoid double meat and bacon. A serving size of meat is 2-3 ounces — about the size of a deck of cards. You’re probably getting well over that with a single meat patty. Bacon is high in calories and fat with little nutrient content. Try the grilled chicken sandwich. Poultry without skin is significantly leaner than the meats most fastfood companies use in their burgers. Eat your sandwich open-faced. By eating only half the bun, you can eliminate unnecessary calories. Ask for a wheat bun. Some places offer a wheat alternative, some don’t. It never hurts to ask. Skip the mayo and other sauces. These dressings and sauces add unnecessary calories. Drink water, diet soda or low-fat milk. Sodas are loaded with sugars, which have calories you don’t need. Have you tried one season of rec. soccer and decided that sport wasn't for you, but you have a perfectly good pair of soccer cleats sitting in the closet? Did you outgrow your gym shoes before they even looked used, or have old shoes that were only used at school for gym? There are plenty of parents out there in the community that would welcome the opportunity to get gently used sports shoes such as cleats and gym shoes for their children who are trying out a sport or just to help save money on the fees and equipment costs that go into being involved with a sport. The schools, field house, and the main park district office will have collection boxes out starting this week for anyone who wishes to donate slightly used, but still quality sports shoes! Please drop them off at your convenience or send them to school for the donation boxes. The shoes donated will be inspected, cleaned up if necessary, and there will be an opportunity for those interested to come see what is available and "shop" the donations at the Junior High Multi-Purpose room on the afternoon of February 21st from 1-4 p.m. Join our Facebook page (Channahon Updates) for the latest updates and to see how you can be involved! Did you know? The PTO provides meals to the teachers when they have to stay late for conferences? Get involved in helping today! Preventing bullying through technology tips continued. The same Bullies 2 Buddies principles apply over the internet. The wonderful advantages of communication with the internet can also make it dangerous. One of the most important things you can do to prevent and respond to cyber bullying is to regularly discuss online interactions with your children. By keeping communication open, it will help your child feel more comfortable in coming to you if any concerns arise. The earlier you start talking to your child on the importance of safe and mature social media interactions, the better the outcome. When asking your child questions about their online activities, make sure to be strategic in how you approach this and you catch them at the right time. Try not to bombard them with questions in the morning right before school. This might cut off communication. Sample questions may be found at: http://www.cyberbullying.us/Questions_Parents_Should_Ask.pdf Supervision and involvement in your child’s online activities is another key prevention strategy. For proactive and reactive responses, the internet has many safety tips to help instruct parents who have children frequently off in cyber space.
