Calvary Courier Dear friends, The Lenten season is a time to focus our attention more intensely on our spiritual growth. Traditionally in the church, it has been a time to examine our lives in the Spirit of Christ, to determine how God can cleanse us, strengthen us, or encourage us for our everyday walk with God. Our Lenten study this year, led by Bill Betlej and Anna Betlej, will take place on Wednesday night during Feed N Seed. Look at the bottom of this page for more about it. This will help us not only in our understanding, but in our claiming the joy of our faith as we “Touch the Water, Taste the Bread.” And each Wednesday evening, there will be time for children and youth, too. Excellent opportunity to enhance your spiritual growth. On Sunday morning preaching, we will explore the seven deadly sins ~ Pride, Envy, Gluttony, Lust, Wrath, Greed and Sloth~ but, more importantly, how we may combat those sins, and cure them, by the power of God’s Spirit in our lives. I would challenge you through the season of Lent, which begins on Ash Wednesday, February 18, to extend your daily time of spiritual discipline. If you currently spend no time each day, I encourage you to spend ten minutes per day, using our Upper Room or resources that are available from the Society of St. Andrews. If you spend that set-aside time with the Lord twice per week, I encourage you to set aside that time four times per week. In other words, begin where you are...and grow from there. Abraham Lincoln said, “I have been driven many times to my knees by the overwhelming conviction that I had nowhere else to go. My own wisdom, and that of all about me, seemed insufficient for the day.” That’s when we begin to truly know the heart of God. Peace, D u Feed your Soul and feed your faces, too—Our Lenten Wednesday night programs begin Wednesday, February 18th, with a light dinner at 5:45 followed by a church-wide Lenten study (for children, youth and adults) at 6:30 and ending with Wednesday Worship at 7:30 pm. We hope you’ll join us in fellowship and study together. This year’s session will last until Wednesday April 1st. Page 2 Join us for our Lenten study as we deeply explore the wonder and mystery of Baptism and Communion. Lent is not just about penitence and self-denial. It is traditionally a time set aside for selfexamination that certainly includes our call and how we are following the way of Jesus. Baptism is our initiation and our call. Communion has many facets that includes penitence, celebration, thanksgiving, being bonded together with God in the Spirit, as well as remembering the Last Supper of the Passion week. As we journey to the Easter celebration of our salvation and deliverance into the Kingdom of God, what better time to explore these remarkable means of grace. Bill Betlej and Anna Betlej will lead all of the adults through this season of growth. The children and youth will meet in their own groups, too. Calvary Courier If you’ll pardon the secular reference, (and humor me if you’re under 40), but every February when the Valentine displays go up in the stores, I find myself humming that “great hymn of the faith” from Ike and Tina Turner, “What’s Love Got to Do With It?” While Christians are still anticipating the coming of the wise men, and the Epiphany of Christ, and commemorating the actual Twelve Days of Christmas, retailers have cleared the shelves of Christmas merchandise and bring out the Valentines and red, heart-shaped boxes of candy. So, yeah, what’s love got to do with it? I would prefer to think that for the children of God, love is an everyday thing. We find ways to celebrate the amazing love God has shown to us through the life, death, and resurrection of God’s Son, Jesus, and yes, love has everything to do with that! It was love that kept Jesus on that cross. There’s no doubt that God loves you and me. Remember when Jesus asked Peter no less than three times, “Do you love me?” (John 21) Peter was quick to assure Jesus of his love, and Jesus’ reply each time went something like this: “Feed my sheep.” “Feed my lambs.” Jesus wanted to be sure that Peter (and maybe even us) knew that he had a job to do – to follow, yes, but also to bring others to the saving grace of God. And we’ve already established, it’s all about love. Love is how we lead others to God. Love is how we show Jesus we truly love him, and love is how we show others that we are God’s beloved children. Do you love God? God sure loves you! Just like that little note written in pencil I received in grade school… PRAISE & JAM! The dishes will still be in the sink when you get back home, so don't worry 'bout a thing! We'll be resting and relaxing and remembering what it's like to laugh. Our theme for the retreat is "Love and Laughter" and there will certainly be plenty of food since we're all bringing our favorite snacks along. We are a lively group with a discussion style format about what is currently going on in our lives. We most recently have discussed how to be a Christian while handling difficult situations in our lives with friends and family. One of our favorite things to discuss is how to wear what Andrew Howell has dubbed “Our Big Foam Jesus Cowboy Hat”! We would love for all of church’s 6-8th graders to come find out what that is and join our small, fun group! We would welcome you! On Sunday, February 8th we will welcome members of Troop 84 and Pack 349, our Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts, who meet in our facilities. We are grateful for those who lead and for these boys who continue to grow through this extension of our ministry. YOUTH 2015 is the national event for United Methodist Youth and their leaders. It is where people experience the breadth and depth of the United Methodist Church, are sharpened by one another, and equipped to experience and express their faith in new and vibrant ways. What does it mean to ‘Go On’? The Wesleyan Movement began because of the foundational idea that faith produces inward and outward holiness. In other words, the faith you have calls you to put it into action. When you go on to take action because of your faith, it is one way to show God that you do love your neighbor. Learning about God, Jesus, the church, etc. are all good things – but when you go on to serve others because of what you’ve learned – that’s when you become a disciple who can change the world.
