HUW DAVIES GALLERY th nd 29 January – 22 February 2015 ON FILM | A PhotoAccess members’ exhibition Annette Lock, Behind the foreshore, 1997, type C print Dedicated to the memory of Sylvie Stern Thinking about film involves thinking beyond the surface of the picture. In 2011, the British artist Tacita Dean lamented the imminent loss of film. While digital photography offers multiple possibilities, Dean felt the qualities of film to be inherently different. She wrote simply, ‘film is chemistry’. Film photographers are like chemists, calibrating and mixing the reactive elements of light, shade, colour and tone in a lab. Making photographs with film is also extremely tactile: silver emulsion is exposed to light, long strips of negatives are bathed in fluid and dried, photographic paper is burned, dodged and printed in the darkroom. A photograph made from a negative does not only have a particular look, but hides within it a scent, a feel, and even a sound. PhotoAccess is home to the only publicly-‐accessible darkroom in the ACT region. Many of our members use the darkroom to produce their works, and many have taken courses at PhotoAccess in film photography and darkroom printing. An awareness of analogue photography and darkroom processing remains an important touchstone for the PhotoAccess community, even for predominantly digital photographers. Even if they have never used the darkroom, our visitors and members are used to the red warning light outside the darkroom, the large-‐format enlargers flanking our side entrance, and the musty smell of developing fluid and fixer. The language of film remains part of photography’s identity. Supported by the ACT and Commonwealth Governments Manuka Arts Centre is an ACT Government arts facility The 40 artists in ON FILM engage with film in various ways. Some have rescued and printed old negatives, giving them renewed life, while others have creatively addressed the theme using digital photography. This exhibition does not only look to the literal use of film photography, but also its relevance in the digital era. Several images are influenced by film, landscapes referencing the cinematic, or still life images celebrating the physical objects of film photography. There is a real affection towards film felt in this exhibition, but also an embrace of its quirks and particularities. It is impossible to think about film today without also thinking about loss. With this exhibition, we also take the opportunity to acknowledge a great loss to our community with the recent passing of Sylvie Stern. Sylvie was a valued member of PhotoAccess, having participated in our 2013 100 Views of Canberra exhibition and publication, and a patron and supporter of the Canberra arts scene. Her influence will be felt at PhotoAccess for years to come. ON FILM is the first members’ exhibition presented at PhotoAccess in 2015. PhotoAccess members’ shows provide accessible and challenging exhibition opportunities for photographers and photo-‐based artists working at various stages in their careers.
