This week Immaculate Conception Catholic School joins other schools around the country in celebrating our Catholic School heritage. The theme for this year’s celebration is Catholic Schools Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service. This year Immaculate Conception Catholic School instituted the Alumni of the Year Award. The award consists of a certificate and pin and is presented to an Immaculate Conception Catholic School Graduate who demonstrates outstanding personal and professional achievements. This year we honor Mrs. Bessie Acosta. Bessie graduated Immaculate Conception Catholic School in 1939. After Immaculate Conception, she attended Pomona Catholic High School in 1943. Bessie stated that she used to ride a trolley car that let her off at the corner of Shamrock and Olive when she attended Immaculate Conception. She was heartbroken when her parents had to take her out of Immaculate Conception because of money ($3 per month). Thankfully for us her mother knew the importance of a Catholic Education and reenrolled her the next year. When asked to name the achievements that reflect the characteristics of education received in a Catholic School, Bessie stated the following: Bessie attributes her being the person she is to her Catholic education. She was imparted with all the academic knowledge Immaculate Conception Catholic School offered during her years here. Bessie feels that the other two facets of our Catholic Education (faith and service) are the most important. Immaculate Conception Catholic School nurtured her faith in God, her prayer life and devotion to our Lord. She built her life accordingly and has passed her faith down to her 4 children. Bessie demonstrates a strong ethic of service that includes service to her parish and school. Bessie has been a parent, PTO President, Softball coach, cook for events, and kitchen manager for the lunch program at school. When asked to state her belief about Catholic education, Bessie said All of Bessie’s children attended Immaculate Conception School and received the same wonderful experience she received many years before. She wishes every child could receive that same valued time here at Immaculate Conception, as Catholic Education is an Advantage for Life! We congratulate Bessie!
