A Church for Today Newsletter of The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) Highland Christian Church 1500 Forest Hills Blvd / Hwy 279 / P O Box 3016 Bella Vista, Arkansas 72715 February 2015 Volume 23 Issue 02 Editor: Phyllis Gotzh Expecting More Great Things to Happen . . . “February - the Month of Love” Tradition says that Cupid’s bow is aimed squarely at the hearts of those who are in love. I believe this to be a ‘marketing strategy’ more than anything else, but why “quiver.” (Excuse the pun). Seriously, February marks the time of the year for slight changes in the weather, looking forward to spring, and for the Church - the Lenten Season. Ash Wednesday is scheduled February 18th this year. We have only a couple of weeks to prepare for the beginning of Lent. I encourage our Church Family to plan to attend Ash Wednesday’s service at 6:00 PM on February 18th. Our Worship Ministry Leader, Lila Hole and myself have met and put into motion this year’s Ash Wednesday Service. We are involving several of our members as Readers, and appropriate congregational hymns will allow everyone to have a part in the service. At the close of meditation, we will place the ‘sign of the cross’ in ashes on each worshippers’ forehead or hand. Ash Wednesday helps prepare us as a church to be contemplative and meditative during the 40 days of Lent. INVITE A FRIEND SUNDAY - February 15th As an incentive to highlight the importance of the Lenten Season, I am asking our Church Family to “Invite a Friend to Church” on February 15th. Many of us know of someone who is unchurched, or looking for a church home. February 15th is an excellent time to invite friends to our service, AND to remain for our Monthly Potluck Luncheon. VISION 21 PANEL - has met for two meetings to discuss the direction our church will go on the next one, three and five years. In the coming weeks a QUESTIONAIRE will be compiled and presented to each member of our church. Your input will be valuable in helping the Panel to come to some specific goals and ministries for Highland. “Share the Vision.” Paul ~ WEEK OF COMPASSION February 15 & 22 are the 2 Sundays we will receive the offering for this special occasion. One of the departments in our National Church is entitled “Week of Compassion”. It gives us the opportunity to put our compassion for others into action. The theme this year is: “GIVE AND CHANGE THE WORLD.” Please read carefully the flyer that will be in your bulletin. It is so true that our abundance becomes others need and their need becomes our abundance. Let’s do our part to give and help change the world.
