Mbokani back in spotlight
Grant in Scotland squad
Whistles again for Bale
BATA: Democratic Republic of Congo striker Dieumerci Mbokani has reemerged as a key figure during the African Nations Cup and was in explosive form with two goals as they beat rivals Congo 4-2 on Saturday to book
a semi-final place.
“It was emotional for me to get a brace like that because in the
first three group games I didn’t score and it was emotional to
return to the scoresheet,” he told reporters. “I scored twice, I’m
proud of myself as much as for the Congolese team.”
Mbokani sparked DR Congo’s recovery from two goals down
by pulling one back after 65 minutes, before Jeremy
Bokila and Joel Kimwaki put DR Congo ahead, and completed an incredible second-half with their fourth in the
last minute at Estadio de Bata.
The Nations Cup marks Mbokani’s return to the
national team following an 18-month injury-enforced
absence and highlighted his potential to shine at the
tournament in Equatorial Guinea.—Reuters
LONDON: Glasgow prop Ryan Grant has been drafted into Scotland’s squad for
the Six Nations after being cleared of an assault charge, the Scottish Rugby
Union (SRU) announced yesterday. The 29-year-old forward, capped 19 times,
was omitted from head coach Vern Cotter’s original squad as his trial was
ongoing, but he has been brought in after the charges against him were “not
proven” at a court in Glasgow. “Glasgow Warriors loose-head prop Ryan Grant
has been added to the Scotland squad for the forthcoming RBS 6 Nations,” the
SRU said in a brief statement. Grant’s Glasgow club-mate and fellow Scotland
international Ryan Wilson faces a disciplinary hearing next week after he was
convicted of assaulting two men, including rugby player Ally Maclay, on a
night out in October 2013. Wilson was suspended by the SRU last week.
Scotland launch their Six Nations campaign against France in Paris on Saturday.

BARCELONA: Gareth Bale showed some exquisite touches for Real Madrid
in their 4-1 victory over Real Sociedad on Saturday but was, once again,
subjected to whistling from a section of the Bernabeu crowd. The stage was
set for the Welshman to be the talisman of the team in the absence of the
suspended Cristiano Ronaldo but instead it was Karim Benzema who took
over the reigns with two goals and a dominant performance.
Bale played in the role of Ronaldo on the left of the attack
and was full of running but some Real fans have turned
against him as they feel he is too greedy and doesn’t look to
combine with his team mates enough. In his debut season
he was lauded for his crucial goals but in this campaign he
has been less decisive in matches and his weaknesses have
been more evident. There were whistles from the crowd last
month at home to Espanyol and they were spurred on
when Ronaldo was angry at one point for not receiving a
pass. Against Sociedad, they whistled if he lost possession or shot waywardly.—Reuters

Canadiens edge past Capitals
MONTREAL: Max Pacioretty scored 3:08
into overtime, Carey Price made 36 saves
and the Montreal Canadiens edged the
Washington Capitals 1-0 on Saturday for
their fifth straight win.
Price posted his second shutout in a
row. He stopped the New York Rangers 1-0
on Thursday night, with Pacioretty scoring
late in the third period.
Washington lost its fifth consecutive
road game. Pacioretty went to the net to
tip Tomas Plekanec’s pass over goaltender
Braden Holtby for the winning goal.
FLYERS 1, MAPLE LEAFS 0
Steve Mason stopped all 30 shots and
Michael Del Zotto scored to help the
Philadelphia Flyers beat Toronto and sent
the Maple Leafs to their ninth straight loss.
Mason had his second shutout of the season and 25th of his career. The Flyers won
their first 1-0 game since Nov. 2, 2013.
The slumping Leafs have been held to
one or less goal in eight of nine games.
The Leafs had scored one goal in each of
the last two games.
The Flyers have won a season-high four
straight games as they make a desperate
push to get back in the Eastern
Conference playoff picture.
SENATORS 7, COYOTES 2
Mark Stone, Bobby Ryan, Erik Karlsson
and Mika Zibanejad each had a goal and
an assist, helping the Ottawa Senators
break away from the Arizona Coyotes.
Marc Methot added three assists for
the Senators. It was 1-all before Ottawa
scored four times in 51/2 minutes. Milan
Michalek broke the tie with 3:09 left in the
second period and Stone made it 3-1.
Mike Hoffman also scored for the
Senators, and Robin Lehner turned aside
35 shots for his first win since Dec. 13.
Zybnek Michalek and Sam Gagne scored

Ericcson scored in the third period.
Lubomir Visnovsky scored for the Islanders
on a power play.
RANGERS 4, HURRICANES 1
Henrik Lundqvist shook off a second-
period injury and made 31 saves, Rick
Nash moved back into a tie for the NHL
goal lead, and the New York Rangers
snapped out of an offensive funk to beat
the Carolina Hurricanes. The Rangers had
lost two straight since the All-Star game,
mustering only one goal in the process,
but Nash and Dominic Moore scored in
the first period, and Chris Kreider and Dan
Boyle added insurance tallies 21 seconds
apart in the third.
Lundqvist got quite a scare when a rising shot by Brad Malone got to him as
Rangers defenseman Ryan McDonagh was
trying to knock down the puck. His stick
appeared to catch Lundqvist under the
mask at his throat, and Lundqvist fell backward to the ice. After being treated for
about 5 minutes, he remained in the
game. Malone had Carolina’s lone goal.
STARS 5, JETS 2
John Klingberg had a pair of goals and
added two assists as the Dallas Stars

left in the third period and Brad Marchand
added an empty-netter for his second
goal of the game as the Boston Bruins
beat the Los Angeles Kings.
Tuukka Rask stopped 30 shots for the
Bruins as he and Los Angeles’ Jonathan
Quick exchanged tough saves throughout
the night. Jordan Nolan scored the only
goal for the Kings, breaking up Rask’s
shutout bid on a soft wrist shot with seven
minutes left in the third. It was the second
goal of the season and evened the score
at 1-1, but the tie didn’t last long. Kelly
put Boston back on top 1:33 later when he
tipped in Carl Soderberg’s shot.

the last three games, Ben Bishop made
34 saves, and the Atlantic Division-leading Tampa Bay Lightning beat the
Columbus Blue Jackets for their franchise-best 10th straight home victory.

the Chicago Blackhawks.
Melker Karlsson scored early and Joe
Thornton added an empty-net goal for
the Sharks, who got their first regulation
win over the Blackhawks since Feb. 10,
2012. Niemi did the rest against his former team as San Jose followed up wins
over defending Stanley Cup champion
Los Angeles and NHL points leader
Anaheim with one against perennial cup
contender Chicago. Antti Raanta made 19
saves for the Blackhawks, who were shut
out for the fourth time this season.
FLAMES 4, OILERS 2
Lance Bouma scored two of Calgary’s
four third-period goals and the Flames
stormed back to beat the Edmonton
Oilers. Trailing 2-0 entering the final 20

later after snapping a shot through the

Levins registers double at NY Armory
NEW YORK: Canadian Cam Levins claimed a startling double by winning the mile then upsetting celebrated training mate Galen Rupp half an hour later
in the two-mile race at the Armory Track Invitational
on Saturday. Levins, a Canadian Olympian in the
5,000 and 10,000 meters in 2012, stunned himself
with the twin triumph, particularly a two-mile win in
which he overtook Rupp halfway through the final
lap and powered to victory.
“I guess I am kind of shocked the more I think
about it that I beat him,” Levins said of the Olympic
10,000m silver medalist who was running his first
race of the year.
“I guess I always just figure if I try and stay close
to him in races I’m going to run well. I’m just happy
to be competitive with him.” Levins, 25, won the mile
in three minutes 54.74 with a strong finishing kick
ahead of Chris O’Hare of Britain in 3:57.26. In the
two-mile, the 25-year-old Canadian ran second for
most of the two-mile race ahead of Rupp, who
surged past him going into the final lap.
But Levins responded and sped past a fading
Rupp to win in 8:15.38, nearly two seconds ahead of
Rupp. “I’d have to say it’s one of my best days in
competitive running,” said Levins, who in 2012
became the first Canadian named most outstanding
in US college athletics while at the University of
Southern Utah.
Another featured runner also fell flat at the
Armory as promising young Mary Cain finished fifth
behind fellow-American Ajee’ Wilson in the women’s
800 meters.—Reuters
