SAIGON SOUTH INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL Connecting Learning to Life SSIS EARCOS WEEKEND WORKSHOP DAY 1 WITH RALPH FLETCHER Saturday, February 7, 2015 (8:00-4:00) Tap Into the Power of Poetry & Wordplay Kids love to write poetry, but many teachers don’t feel comfortable teaching it. Perhaps we are uncomfortable writing and reading poetry, or it may be that we don’t feel we have a deep enough knowledge base. This one-day workshop will rectify that. We’ll talk about the importance of mentor texts to lift student writing in this area. We’ll take advantage of several writing occasions where we can try our own hand writing poetry. The workshop will delve into the craft of poetry: creating line breaks, repetition, the challenge (and pitfalls) of rhyme, revision, just to name a few. Ralph is a well-known teacher-educator as well as an award-winning poet for children. Enduring Understandings As a result of this workshop, participants will deepen understanding of how to: • nurture wordplay in the classroom • use the writer’s notebook as a playground for language. • teach craft elements of poetry including line breaks, compression, alliteration and metaphor. • structure a poetry workshop. • confer with students on their poetry.
