2015 1st QUARTER
Total Resource Campaign Takes Care of Business
The Council Bluffs Area Chamber of Commerce is pleased with
the success of the 6th Annual Total Resource Campaign (TRC). Over
60 volunteers participated under the guidance of the TRC chair, Steve
Baumert, CEO of Methodist Jennie Edmundson.
Campaign volunteers worked diligently for
eight weeks to secure sponsorships for 2015
Chamber programs, events and publications.
On October 30th, a victory celebration was held
and sponsored by McCoy’s at Thunderbowl.
“The response we received from our
member businesses during the campaign
was excellent! We are so fortunate to have
such a supportive business community. This
will translate to even greater
member benefits. By evaluating
what members invested in, we
are better able to fine tune the
programs and events we offer,”
said Kristine Plunkett, vice
president of chamber operations.

The Importance of Long-Term Relationships in
Business Attraction Programs
Now in its tenth month of existence, Advance Southwest
Iowa Corporation (ASWI) has established its position as the point
of contact for new business investment in Pottawattamie County
and Council Bluffs. ASWI opens the door for Iowa to participate in
the Greater Omaha Regional Economic Development Partnership.
Our award-winning team delivers the region to companies via the
“one-stop shop” approach with accurate, detailed data. Much has
been accomplished since incorporation, and we are now actively
engaged in telling the story, hustling the product and managing
projects that involve companies that are growing into our regional
economy.
So, how long will it take? Consider two examples – one close
and current; the other distant and philosophical. The first example
is an active project that ASWI is assisting – Project Hightower.
Individuals began working on this project more than six years
ago with the interest of developing automated and integrated
services in third-party logistics in the Greater Omaha region. Just
a mere seven months ago, the company met with Council Bluffs
officials for the first time to determine if the project and the
community would be compatible. While the outcome has yet to be
determined, six years of work have been compressed into seven
months of relationship building as professionals from all walks of
life have come together to find solutions to assist a company with
its capabilities.

Office has grant funding available to eligible Iowa
businesses to exhibit at international trade shows (held in
or outside the U.S.) or participate in IEDA trade missions.
Eligible Iowa companies may receive up to $4,000 in
reimbursement to exhibit at upcoming international
trade shows or to participate in IEDA sponsored
trade missions. Details are available at: http://www.

ETAP or contact Lisa Longman at [email protected]
for questions.
The second example involves
another Midwestern state, Indiana.
In 1985, Indiana was the runner-up
state for Toyota’s Camry automobile
assembly plant that located in
Georgetown, Kentucky. For the
next thirteen years, whenever an
Indiana governor or lieutenant
Mike Dellinger
Executive Director of
governor was in Japan, they
Advance Southwest Iowa
would arrange visits with Toyota’s
Corporation
senior management to thank them
for their consideration and to build relationships. As a result of
this courtship, in 1998 Toyota announced that it would build an
assembly plant in Princeton, Indiana, and the company recognized
Indiana’s persistence and patience in working to establish itself
as worthy of the opportunity. Today, Toyota has invested several
billions of dollars in Princeton, Indiana, employing thousands of
workers while changing a regional economy.
So, how long will it take? Nobody knows for certain - but are
you willing to commit to the long term, build the relationships and
win the projects? Advance Southwest Iowa Corporation and its
partners are committed, willing, and able. As a result, companies,
consultants and the competition are taking notice, and change is
on the horizon.

Youth Leadership Council
Bluffs – Now Accepting
Applications for 2015-16
Member’s
Youth Leadership Council Bluffs (YLCB) was created as a
leadership development course that mirrors its adult counterpart,
Leadership Council Bluffs. YLCB focuses on six different areas
of community: government, non-profits, economic development,
education, heritage, and media. The coursework outlines student
development and problem solving as well as creates a community
investment for the youth in
order to strengthen the city
and region. The program
is designed to target three
different types of students
– proven leaders, emerging
leaders, and potential leaders. YLCB is open to any high school
student entering the 11th grade during the 2015-16 school year.
Courses begin in September 2015.
To be considered, a student must apply as a high school
sophomore, complete the application by the deadline, and have
two references. Upon acceptance students must have his/
her school’s principal sign off on their application. The program
would require a student to be absent from school once a month.
Dates are provided in advance for a student to line up homework
assignments.
Applications will be available online at www.
councilbluffsiowa.com. If you have any questions please
contact Kristine Plunkett at (712) 325-1000 or kplunkett@
