DESERT DUST FEBRUARY 2015 PAGE 1 PAGE 2 FEBRUARY 2015 DESERT DUST N obles and Ladies: What a fabulous start to a great year! I would like to start this message by Congratulating Illus. Sir David Sumpter and Lady Sandy on their fantastic job in 2014. It was a privilege for me to serve with him these past 9 years, his insight and wisdom will be missed on the board. Through the dedication and hard work of our Oasis members and Lady’s we were able to donate $1.25 million to Shrine Children’s Hospitals in 2014! So the goals for 2015 have been set high, but I know the same dedication from our members of Oasis Shrine will help us successfully meet or exceed those goals. tribution to this special evening. to attend this event and this was very appreciated. I want to thank everyone who helped with preparation of this event, especially the Aides, Divan members, and the special friends who helped Lady Mary. You did a wonderful job of making our Temple look incredible. In addition, I need to give a special thanks to the Oasis office staff. They went over and above their normal duties to make sure that our weekend’s events went off without a hitch. As you will see through the pictures in this edition, the Club/ Unit Appreciation night, with recognition given by Illustrious Sir David Sumpter to all of those Clubs, Units and members who have made a difference in the past year, was a really huge success. My thanks go to everybody who attended and participated. I know everyone in attendance appreciated the hard work by the Catawba County Shrine Club in preparing that wonderful meal. No catering company I know of could have done a better job! The food was absolutely great. The hard working Hospitality team deserves a big pat on the back as well. Not many of us think about all of the work they do behind the scenes. We are so lucky to have such a great team, led by Allen and Doris Leatherman, to help with our Hospitality needs. I can’t tell you how much Lady Mary and I appreciated the turn out for this year’s Installation of Officers. A special thanks to the Drum and Bugle for their participation in the event. I was beaming with pride as they marched into the auditorium. It made for a very emotional moment for Lady Mary and myself. To my Shrine clubs and units that we have had the privilege to serve these past 9 years, you made a special effort Another item that made the Installation banquet special was the magnificent beach display in the foyer of our Shrine Center. Lady Laurin Carter, wife of 1st Ceremonial Master Bill Carter, designed and built this display. With a limited amount of time to complete this artwork, she worked hard to produce a scene that was very special to Lady Mary and myself. I cannot thank her enough for her valuable con- We have attended several Club and Unit Installations of their Officers, and it has been great to spend time with each and every one of these Clubs and Units during their changing of the guard. I want to wish each one of you a wonderful and successful year. We hope that the officers of all Clubs and Units will take advantage of the Committee leadership teams, to help their individual Clubs and Units. Just keep in mind that each Committee Chairman, and their teams, are there to help you in any way they can. Please take advantage of their abilities to help you make your Club and Unit grow. Some very exciting plans have been made for 2015. We plan to build on the momentum that has been established to increase membership through the efforts of a much improved Membership Committee. We hope to increase attendance at our functions with better communication through our web site and the Desert Dust newspaper. We plan to increase fund raising through the support of our Clubs and Units from Oasis Shrine Center. We want to complete the facelift of your headquarters, and through our rental support team, we hope to generate more income, which ultimately will serve to continue to keep your yearly dues at a level that is not burdensome to anyone. With the efforts of our District Representatives, we have hopes of reducing our membership losses for Non-Payment of Dues. All of these functions will help to rebuild our membership rolls, and will make Oasis head- I would like to take this opportunity to explain my pin and slogan for 2015. The obvious part would be my last name Ham, therefore the Pigs. I have played the snare Drum with the Drum and Bugle Corps for the past 32 years. My dad Joe the second in line who plays the bugle and has since 1968. He is now at the age of 80 and still continues to march. The third Pig is my youngest brother Brad who also plays the snare drum. The fourth pig is my oldest son Joey who plays the Base drum, and always wears his sunglasses. Bringing up the rear is my youngest son Jeffrey who plays the snare drum as well. Generations marching for kids I’m asked all the time if I will finally ride in a car now that I am Potentate, but as long as my Dad is marching I will march with him. quarters the Center to emulate by Shrine Centers worldwide. Lady Mary and I are excited about the scheduled Greenville Shriners Open House on March 13 and 14. Each visit we make to one of our Hospitals makes us proud to be part of the most professional hospitals in the world. The trip this year will include a tour of the hospital as well as other activities that will not only be educational, but rewarding. I hear my clubs and units mention all the time how they would like to visit our Hospital! This is that opportunity. All members of Oasis Shrine are invited to come with us to this event. You will find the announcement giving the activities for this visit, and a registration form, in this edition of The Desert Dust. If you have never visited the Greenville hospital, this will be a great time to see this wonderful Hospital from a viewpoint that very few people get. We will be able to talk with the medical staff and the administrative staff to give us information about the new procedures they have been able to use. If you have visited Greenville in the past, you are welcome to travel with us again. I guarantee you there will be new and exciting things there that you have never seen before. Please join us. I look forward to the Club and Unit events in the future, and especially our Spring Ceremonial in beautiful Maggie Valley. My goal is to attend every function possible to show my full support for you and your hard work, the members who make Oasis Shrine the greatest. We have assembled a great team at our Headquarters, and each person there can help with any question you might have. My door is always open. If you need me - call me. I am there for you. In closing, I want to thank the Nobility for their obvious support of Lady Mary and myself, and also thank the Divan, Committee Chairmen and Desert Dust staff for their continued efforts to fulfill the plans to build a better Shrine Temple membership that will help us live up to our reputation as the best Shrine Center in the world. Yours in the Faith Todd Generations Marching for Kids! INSTALLATION LOBBY DISPLAY TELLS A STORY Few people were aware that the beautiful display in the Lobby of Oasis Shrine Temple on the evening of Installation actually delivered a message that we can all understand and appreciate. As you faced the tent, there was one big Temple displayed which depicted the Imperial Shrine. There were a lot of smaller Temples shown, reflecting the individual Temples that belong to the Shriners International. As you moved toward the rear of the display, you could see Illustrious Sir Todd’s name to the left, and Lady Mary’s name to the right. Beside each name sat small white lanterns that represented the purity of God’s love; his white light for each of you to guide you and protect you with his white light of knowledge. Behind both names was inscribed “Potentate - 2015”. On each side of the inscription were two sand piles with small sea shells surrounding them representing all of our children in the hospitals we work so hard for. In the middle were two big conch shells with a sprig of Acacia on top, representing the life of Noble Richard Rozzell, a Noble of Oasis Shrine and a member of Catawba County Shrine Club in Hickory and the Gator Patrol who was killed in an accident on the previous Wednesday. The sprig of Acacia was given to a Gator Lady after the Installation to be delivered to Noble Richard’s wife, Donna. This seems to be a great deal of information, but it tells a very heartfelt story, that brought forth lots of emotion from those familiar with what the display represented. Now you, also, can enjoy this wonderful message, displayed for Illustrious Sir Todd and for Lady Mary, through the artistic hands of Lady Laurin Carter. DESERT DUST FEBRUARY 2015 Your 2015 Potentate of Oasis Shrine is Todd Ham, elected to lead the largest and best Shrine Center in the world. Noble Todd was born in Charlotte, NC, and attended North Mecklenburg High School. After graduation, he attended Central Piedmont College, and is President of Ham Brothers, Inc. in Mount Holly, NC. He and Lady Mary are the proud parents of Jeffrey, 23, and Joey, 25 who is married to Lady Lindsey. They are also the proud grandparents of Finley, who recently was listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as being the most beautiful grandchild in the World. Noble Todd comes from a deep Masonic heritage. His great Grandfather was a 33rd degree Mason, and his father, brother and both of his sons are Masons and Shriners. He was raised a Master Mason in November, 1982, and in 2008 was awarded his twenty-five year veteran certificate. He was Master of his Lodge, Mt. Holly 544, in 1992. He cites sitting in the East in his H ello Nobles, Ladies, and Friends of the Shrine. Since I didn’t have anything noteworthy last month, thus no article, I will take this opportunity to say that I hope that everyone had fantastic holidays!!! While researching for this month’s message, I ran across several items of East-West Shrine Game trivia via the internet. Now, since everything one reads on the internet is true, I don’t mind communicating these items to you without hesitation. References are available upon request, but most of the facts below came from the internet mother-ship, Wikipedia or Shrinersinternational.org. tended the 2015 game, currently held annually in St. Petersburg, Florida at Tropicana Field. Tropicana Field is a domed stadium in that has been the home of Major League Baseball’s Tampa Bay Rays since the team’s inaugural season in 1998, when they were the Devil Rays. The East– West Shrine Game is an annual postseason college football all-star game played each January since 1925. The game is a Shrine sponsored event, with the net proceeds benefiting the Shriners Hospitals for Children. The game’s slogan is “Strong Legs Run That Weak Legs May Walk”. It’s not unusual to see as many as 100 players from game rosters sign with NFL teams. We really don’t discuss the East West Shrine Game very much within Oasis, but this football game generates international exposure for our philanthropy and fraternities. By the time this article is read, around thirty (30) folks from Oasis will have at- Two NFL greats—each particularly legendary in the annals of specific teams—have been selected as head coaches for the 90th East-West Shrine game(2015). NFL Hall-of Famer Mike Singletary, who starred as a linebacker for the Chicago PAGE 3 Lodge to confer all three degrees on both of his sons as his most Memorable Masonic experience. Todd was made a Shriner in November 1984 in Asheville, and began a long and active association with Oasis Shrine. He became a member of the Oasis Drum and Bugle Corps in 1983, following in his father’s footsteps. In addition, Noble Todd’s sons, both members of Oasis Shrine, complete three generations of active Drum and Bugle Corps members. You may remember seeing an article in the Desert Dust, with a picture of Todd, his father, brother and sons as they marched together in Blowing Rock at the Ceremonial Parade there. Todd has also served as Captain of his beloved Corps, and has played the snare drum for the past 29 years. Despite his duties on the Divan, you will see Noble Todd marching in nearly every Oasis parade. We sort of expect our Divan members to take a break from their unit duties when they assume the duties of the Divan. Noble Todd prides himself in accomplishing both. Noble Todd was appointed by Imperial Sir Al Madsen as Chairman of the Motor Corps division for competition at the Bears during the 1980s, will lead the East squad of college all-stars. Jim Zorn, the playmaking quarterback for the Seattle Seahawks during the team’s fledgling years in the late 70s will guide the West team. In addition to their stellar playing careers, the two men also have extensive coaching backgrounds - including serving as head coaches of NFL teams Singletary with the San Francisco 49ers in 2009 – 2010, Zorn with the Washington Redskins (2008 – 2009). Noting the contest’s mission to support Shriners Hospitals for Children, Singletary said, “I’m very excited to participate in this worthwhile event as a head coach. So many of these young players are on the cusp of some great seasons in the NFL, but I think that playing for a cause like Shriners Hospitals for Children will provide worthwhile perspective as they transition to professional careers.” Zorn agreed. “I coached college athletes for several years and the opportunity to get to know and watch the development of out- standing young men is a tremendous experience. I’m extremely happy to be doing that again within the setting of the East-West Shrine game supporting Shriners Hospitals for Children.” The game matches teams of players who attended college in the Eastern United States against those schooled in the Western United States. The game and the practice sessions leading up to it attract dozens of scouts from professional NFL teams. In recent decades, the game has been played in mid-January so players from teams whose schools were involved in bowl games can participate, which is important, as these teams often have some of the very best players. Now, I have to be honest, one of the most interesting pieces of trivia to me involved the invitation of Canadian football players to participant in the game, since I had no idea this was the case. Since 1985, Canadian players playing in Canadian university football have also been invited (even though the CIS and NCAA play by different football codes). As such, this is the only bowl game in either the Todd Ham 2015 Imperial Session in Charlotte for 2012. His attendance to detail reflected in the accolades that resulted from the successful competitions for the many Motor Corps participants from throughout the world. It is obvious that Todd not only feels a deep dedication to the organization that is a lifeline to so many children, but he indeed displays that dedication. Please join our Divan and membership in congratulating him on his election, and welcoming him to the helm of Oasis Shrine. Canadian or American college football schedules to include players from both Canadian and American universities. Because of this, the Shrine Game is the only game on either the Canadian or American college football schedules in which players from both sides of the border compete with or against each other. No American university currently has a Canadian football program, and only one Canadian university currently has an American football program (the Simon Fraser Clan, which had pulled out of the NAIA in favor of CIS football, but have since joined NCAA Division II.). As of 2008, two players from each team are from Canadian universities. The Canadian players on the Western team come from Canada West schools, while the players on the Eastern come from the other three Canadian conferences. The practice of inviting Canadian players began in 1985 when Calgary Dinos offensive lineman Tom Spoletini was invited to play. Two Canadian players (one for each team) were invited starting in 1986, and continued every year since, except in 2008, when four Canadian players (two per team, one each on offense and defense) were invited. The Calgary Dinos have had the most invitees, with 10. The Saskatchewan Huskies and Alberta Golden Bears have five and four invitees, respectively. Well, we could probably go on forever about the detailed history of the game, the actual Canadian invitees since 1985, etc., but suffice it to say, the East West Shrine Game is a very important event for Shriners both from a media exposure perspective, as well as a community relations perspective. Tune in next month since we will be reviewing our 2014 Oasis successes. O.K., once again you’re let me take up way too much of your time. Things continue to go well here at Oasis, and we would love to have you stop by and visit your temple. Take care until next month, and remember, the work you do for our fraternity and philanthropy is sincerely appreciated and essential to our hospitals and the children they serve. In 2014, we built a strong, core team that includes our 8 District Reps and 91 Blue Lodge Ambassadors. We’ve also asked for the name of a noble from each club and unit who will serve as the “Membership Outreach” position for their respective clubs and units. These nobles will serve as a critical communication and membership component of our overall strategies moving forward (adding about another 80 nobles to the Team). These nobles will be invited to the Oasis Membership Seminar on Saturday afternoon, January 24 (to be held following the Club and Unit Officers’ Orientation). Ashe County Shrine Club Hits A Milestone DESERT DUST FEBRUARY 2015 PAGE 15 December was a proud and exciting month for Ashe County Shrine Club members, in more ways than one. At a spectacular banquet on December 20th, Ashe County Shrine Club held a historical event with a ceremonial burning of the mortgage note on the Shrine Club building, nestled deep in the mountainous Jefferson, North Carolina. Divan member, Noble Mike Neaves, Past President of Ashe County Shrine Club, entertained those in attendance with a history of the acquisition and building of their Club. It was with a great deal of pride that the officers of Ashe County Shrine, led by Noble Mike, struck the match that ended the indebtedness they have carried for many years. In a subsequent ceremony, Illustrious Sir David Sumpter, Potentate of Oasis Shrine, installed the officers for 2015, capping out a night that will be remembered for many years to come. Join together in congratulating Ashe County Shrine Club members for reaching this historical milestone. They are truly a wonderful asset to the Oasis Shrine family. This is a very exciting time of year to be an active, dedicated and committed Oasis Shriner and Patrolman. Our first order of Shrine business was to attend the Clubs and Units Appreciation event for Shrine Year 2014 on Friday the 9th. The best news of the night may have been that Oasis Clubs and Units raised over $1.25 million dollars for Shriners Hospitals for Children. Like the moral of The Three Little Pigs story ‘hard work pays off’ – and great leadership helps too. The following Saturday evening we were in full PatrolForce as Oasis MC George Wilcox called for our Color Guard to present the seven (7) Shrine ‘State’ Flags flanked and protected by our chromed ceremonial sabers for a stage presentation. Patrol Lady Beth Downs sounded fantastic as she sang our National Anthem, it gave the Captain chills as he held the American Flag proudly. In rather quick and short order our outgoing 2014 Potentate David Sumpter and his First Lady Sandy were bestowed a custom Oasis Shri- ners Past Potentate license plate and a ceremonial escort from the Oasis stage under a Patrol Arch of Steel and a procession of applauding Patrolmen. Next our new Potentate for 2015 Illustrious Sir Todd Ham and his First Lady Mary were announced and escorted by Nobles Dave Campbell and Past Captain John Bean to the cadence of The Oasis Drum and Bugle Corp. Our new Potentate was installed with all of the fanfare afforded this ceremony. His and Her jackets were procured, thank you Noble Past Captain John Bean and Lady Monie, and presented along with a custom Oasis Shriners Potentate 2015 license plate from our Patrol Unit. The Patrol Captain escorted the new Second Ceremonial Master Tommy Helms and his Lady Kelly to the stage. By and all though, the Oasis Patrol Unit’s biggest and best surprise of the evening was one of our own, Noble First Lieutenant Chris Hall was announced and installed as Oasis Divan Marshall. A great night to be an Oasis Shriner and an Oasis Patrolman, Standing Tall for the Glory of Shrinedom. Congratulations once more to Illustrious Sir Todd Ham and First Lady Mary. We are proud, proud, proud of you. Our Patrol Unit has a full year planned representing Oasis and Shrinedom. Many parades and fundraising activities abound. A long time ago someone said that the only person on the entire planet who likes change is a baby! And, when we are told “change is coming”, sudden terror seems to strike in our hearts. Weather even gets into the act. Here we are in February, longing for the days of summer. In February we may even be looking back to memories of a wonderful, warm summer. Shirley Jackson said: “February, when the days of winter seem endless and no amount of wistful recollecting can bring back any air of summer.” Nope! No about of longing and recollecting can bring back the past—no matter how badly we wish for “the way things used to be”. In the Book of Isaiah, the prophet says that the Lord has told him to preach: “Do not remember the former things, or consider the things of old. I am about to do a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert”. (Isaiah 43) At the beginning of the New Year, at Oasis Shrine Headquarters as with many other organizations, we have new leadership taking their responsibilities. And, with the new leadership comes CHANGE! And, we have a choice we can embrace the change and be a part, or we can resist and become resentful and maybe even angry. Choice. As we read from the Book of Isaiah, God is constantly doing a new thing. He is doing a new thing in our individual lives and God is doing a new thing in the lives of Shriners and other organiza- John H. Stanley, P.P., Chaplain tions. As we drive around, we do not drive all the way constantly looking in the rear view mirror! Nope! We check where we had been occasionally, but where do we fix our eyes? Sure! Not on that tiny, little rear view mirror—but, we fix our eyes on that BIG, gigantic, wide windshield. Yes, we concentrate on what is ahead—not what is behind or where we had been. “If you’re always looking back… you’ll never discover the treasure that lies just up ahead.” J.E.B. Spredemann, Learning to Love - Saul’s Story John Stanley, P.M., P.P (’97) is Chaplain of Oasis Shriners. DESERT DUST FEBRUARY 2015 WINTER 2014 We enjoyed a beautiful, sunshiny day on Saturday, December 13 for the annual Cat Square 2 pm Christmas parade and our monthly meeting/ breakfast beginning at 9 am at Allen and Doris Leatherman’s . The Leatherman’s fed 80+ of us scrambled eggs, cubed pork and gravy and “homemade” cat-head biscuits as huge as your hand. The delicious breakfast included Gator Whiz, coffee’s, teas, hot cocoa, apple cider along with Dunkin’ Doughnuts decorated as Christmas wreath’s and Sadie’s “famous” Chocolate Covered Gator Cherries. Yum... Yum...! Captain David Reep held a brief Gator meeting and introduced special guests...members of the Divan...he also thanked our hosts and the food committee and all the help he had this year from the Gators. Kenny Jarrett introduced a special guest and Shrine patient Tory and her MOM Annette with the Mountaineer Shrine Club...Mitchell County ... Bakersville NC . Annette shared Tory’s journey from a 4 1⁄2 year old daughter riding on her dad’s knee while he mowed the yard on a riding lawn mower...the mower hit a hole and Tory fell off and had her leg and foot torn and wrapped about the mower... A trip to a hospital, a quick “fix” because the family had no insurance and was sent home with her MOM to care for that serious leg/foot injury...wheel chair bound ...Long story short, it was three months later when a Shriner saw her injuries that were getting worse and not healing...He made a phone call and within 24 hours Tory and MOM were transported to Shriner’s Hospital in Greenville... where Tory was and still is treated 8 years later for the injuries...treatment will continue until she is 17 years old where a surgery can do some final corrections after her foot has finished growing...She still must wear special soft type shoes but she is every bit a precious beautiful young lady who bounces around now like all little girls do. “What you do as a Shriner is important!” MOM and Tory and friends are so grateful for the care received from the Shriner’s and proudly rode in the Cat Square parade with the Shriner’s unit. The 15 Gators that paraded were joined by the Road Runners, the Dune Cats, Hillbillies and several Shriner’s floats and the two hour parade was enjoyed by a huge number of viewers who reaped the benefits of professional floats, country designs, fire trucks, “anything goes “ and ending with a Santa Claus atop a princess pumpkin carriage pulled by an reindeer carved from wood and designed by Fulbright Lumber Company!!! 180 + horses ended the parade around 4 pm. The Gator’s were invited back to the Leatherman’s house for Soup and crackers after a stop at the Lincoln County Shrine Clubhouse. This is an annual event that just doesn’t have any comparisons. On Wednesday, December 17th the Installation of Gator Patrol Officers was held at the Catawba County Shrine Clubhouse in Newton, NC. Officiating in this joint Installation with the Catawba County Shrine Club was our own Gator Patrol Organizer, Kenny Jarrett, who is 1st Ceremonial Master in the Oasis Divan. Gator Patrol Officers Installed for 2015 is the following: Captain - Larry Hale 1st Lieutenant - Danny Lyle 2nd Lieutenant - Richard Ellenburg Secretary - Rupert Little Treasurer - David Bowman “And that’s the Way it Was...See ya’ later Gator!” PAGE 19 Join A Winning Team NASCARTS Captain John Cable 336-880-5790 PAGE 20 FEBRUARY 2015 DESERT DUST Come check out the Cabarrus Shrine Club Membership meeting is the last Friday of every month Social at 6:30pm – Dinner at 7:00pm – Meeting at 7:30pm Address: 1460 Oakwood Ave, Kannapolis NC Nobles, Ladies and Guests Welcome! The turnout was fantastic and we are all so very happy for I. S. Todd and Lady Mary to have had such a wonderful evening. We look forward to offering great support to our Potentate again this year as together we all work to keep Oasis the leading Shrine Temple in Shriners International. As you can imagine, we are especially proud of our new Potentate and his Lady as they have been so active in the Corps for over 30 years now. I.S. Todd is a Past Captain of the D&B and has continued to be an active marching member of the Corps during his journey as a member of the Divan. We believe that you and your club or unit would be especially proud too when the time comes that one of your Noble Members is elected to serve as Potentate. As we learned that I.S. Todd is the 120th Potentate of Oasis Shriners, we believe Illustrious Sir Todd Ham’s Fez adorning the Oasis plaque at Imperial Shrine Headquarters in Tampa, Florida. that he is the 4th member of the Drum & Bugle Corps to become Potentate. On that list would be Illustrious Sir Ralph Hood in 1963; Gene Morrison, PP in 1986; John Miller, PP in 1991; Tommy Price, PP in 1994. DESERT DUST FEBRUARY 2015 PAGE 21 Lastly, we offer our congratulations to D&B Past Captain Tommy Helms who was appointed to the Divan as the 2nd Ceremonial Master during the installation ceremony.
