Still At It
Friends & fans turned out to share memories and stories when
VOICE FM radio host, arts stalward and Ballarat celebrity Dave
Knowles retired from the VOICE FM Accessing Arts program after
over a decade of plying the microphone. Dave’s inimitable way
with garnering the latest news and best interviews with local &
visiting artists will be sorely missed - BUT inquiring minds understand
that plans & projects are afoot for this irrepressible man-abouttown. Stay tuned...

How I Spent
My Summer
Vacation...
Public Art Coordinator Julie Collins and
partner Derek John of DJ Projects installed
their work Evidence Based Research as part
of the Monalto Sculpture Prize exhibition,
opening 22 February at Monalto Winery in
Red Hill. Fabulous work, Julie & Derek I know that our vote is in!
Arts & Culture Coordinator Deborah Klein made some
field trips to check out regional creative commercial
spaces, including the Little Creatures brewery &
eatery complex and Ian Ballis’ Powerhouse street art
and soon-to-be-events venue. Both are superb
examples of adaptive reuse of formerly derelict
industrial sites, & both are contributing to making
Geelong an international destination for artists,
families & indie visitors alike.

The ReFashion Show returns!
Ballarat, with its mix of environmental awareness,
cool country vibe & vibrant creativity, is a town
ripe for the international fashion-from-recycledmaterials movement that marries green concepts
with an urban sensibility to create wearable art
that does the planet good.
Accessories also make a strong statement this
year, guaranteeing that you will never again
view your kids’ toybox with a jaundiced eye.
Fashion on mannequins is one thing, but you
get the best sense of how a design works when
viewed moving on the human body – and The
ReFashion Show does not disappoint! You can
experience these fabulous works live & lively
when models of all shapes & sizes strut this stuff
between performance sets at The ReFashion
Show Catwalk, presented as part of the Ballarat
Backyard Tasters on Friday, 13 February.
The ReFashion Show is a showcase for established
and emerging talent exploring new ideas, an
opportunity for aspiring designers to experiment
with new materials, and a serious contemporary
art exhibition highlighting issues around waste, our

images that are more than the simple representation of a person or a place.
Drawing on her own life experiences, Nathalie
Saldumbide’s portraits seem to take a philosophical and highly subjective position. Some employ
a metaphoric darkness denoting gravity; others
employ a joie de vivre demonstrating a growing
confidence of existing through art.
Ian Kemp uses photography to explore his new
home in Ballarat as well as places visited in his
travels, creating landscapes that evoke mystery
as well as an emotional response to settings only
previously dreamed about. His landscapes and
his portraits are both more than a simple representation of features, revealing character that
is both specific to the subject and of a universal
appeal.

Ballarat Backyard Tasters.
All welcome!
Backspace Gallery is always proud to present
work by some of our region’s most skilled & best
known artists – and even more excited to serve
as handmaiden to the debut of new artists onto
the local scene.
Faces & Places (26 February - 15 March) is one
such opportunity, introducing the work of
emerging photographers Nathalie Saldumbide
and Ian Kemp.
In a literal sense, Faces & Places can be seen as
a series of portraits and landscapes. But it is more
than that – the work reflects places in time;
places in the artists’ life experiences that are
highly significant for them and which mark
moments of self-discovery and self-knowledge.
Through their work, Nathalie and Ian examine the
emotional space evoked by their subjects. They
explore mood and give emphasis resulting in

2015 Ballarat Backyard Tasters
Cookin’ Up A Storm
The 3rd annual Ballarat Backyard Tasters is on the
Arts & Culture menu again for February & March,
bringing some of our region’s best contemporary
live music to Ballarat in a series of four free
concerts.
Presented by the City of Ballarat, exhilarating
entertainment, arresting artistry, fabulous food &
delicious company are all on offer on Friday
evenings 13 February - 6 March, 5:30 – 8:30pm,
rain or shine.
The popular Ballarat Backyard Tasters are a
relaxed segue into the final weekends of Summer,
with performances from emerging artists as well
as perennial favourites & exciting new sounds
guaranteed to get you on the dance floor.
Highlights this year include cool grooves ranging
from the 60’s dance tunes of Vonda Bouys & The
Falsettos, Geoffrey Williams’ homage to the sultry
sounds of Nina Simone & Bill Withers, Black Arm
Band founder and Blues diva Joe Geia and Kerri
Simpson, and the soulful alt-country of Arkie T.
Williams & The Mudlarks.
The February Ballarat Backyard Tasters will be
staged in Alfred Deakin Place, in the heart of our
CBD Arts & Heritage Precinct; the final Backyard
Taster is a special event designed to introduce
a new audience to one of Ballarat’s oldest but
least-known treasures: the Ballarat Municipal
Observatory on Mt. Pleasant.
In addition to magnificent music, each Taster
also offers added extras: The ReFashion Show
Catwalk (13 February), the Faces & Places
Backspace Gallery exhibition opening
(20 February), a Visual Feast guest Augustus
Firestone (27 February) and after-hours Star
Gazing through the Observatory’s telescopes (6
March).
And that’s not all! BYO seats & picnic - or enjoy
scrumptious savouries, sweets & beverages from
a diverse range of fine vendors of food & drink.
Bring your family, bring your friends, and plan on
celebrating the very best of Ballarat – culture,
cuisine & community!
