Charles Henderson Child Health Center
What is the best way to protect myself and my family from the flu?
Everyone 6 months of age or older should get the flu vaccine as
soon as it is available in your area. CDC recommends a three
pronged approach to fighting the flu:
x Get Vaccinated
x Take Everyday preventive actions to help stop the spread
of germs, and
x Take anti-viral medications to treat the flu illness if your
doctor prescribes them.
What are the “Everyday Preventive Actions” I can take to help stop
the spread of germs? There are steps you can take in your daily life to help protect you from getting the flu.
x Wash your hands often with soap and water.
o Rub hands together to make lather and scrub all surfaces for 20 seconds
o Rinse hands well under running water
o Dry hands well using a paper towel or air dry
o Use paper towel to turn off the faucet
x No soap and water? Use alcohol-based hand gel
o Apply gel to palm
o Rub the gel over all surfaces of hands and fingers until dry.
x Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth. Germs spread this way.
x Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
x Practice good health habits. Get plenty of sleep and exercise, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat
healthy food.
x Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use
it.
x If you are sick with flu-like illness, stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone without the use of
fever-reducing medicine.
Are there medications I can take to prevent getting the flu?
If you are healthy but exposed to a person with the flu, antiviral drugs can prevent you from getting sick. Antiviral
medications are prescription pills, liquids, or inhalers used to prevent or treat flu viruses. They are approved for adults
and children one year and older. There are four antiviral drugs approved for treating the flu in the United States
x oseltamivir (Tamiflu),
x zanamivir (Relenza),
x amantadine (Symmetrel), and
x rimantadine (Flumadine).
The sooner you are treated with an antiviral, the more likely it will prevent the flu. Antiviral drugs are 70% to 90%
effective at preventing the flu. Talk to your health care provider if you have concerns regarding the flu virus symptoms,
treatment, and prevention.

Milky Moo’s Sante Fe TB&T $1 million donation will further science and technology at Troy University - A $1 million donation by former U.S. Representative Terry Everett
will help advance Troy University’s new School of Science and Technology. The gift, unveiled during the University’s Board of Trustees meeting
Friday, will fund an eminent scholar faculty position for the College of Arts and Sciences school, set to launch in Spring 2015. “Science and
technology is so important,” said Everett. “I can’t think of a better thing on which to concentrate.” Everett, a Midland City High School
graduate and Dothan native, linked his interest in science and technology to his four-year hitch in the United States Air Force, where he was
assigned to the USAF Security Service’s 6901st Special Communication Group, serving as an analyst for the fledgling National Security
Administration. Later, he would champion such causes as the U2 spy plane in Congress, where he served on the Armed Services Committee as
ranking member of the Subcommittee on Strategic Forces, and on the Permanent Select Committee of Intelligence as ranking member of the
Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations, among others. Following his Congressional career, Everett served on the Department of State’s
International Security Advisory Board. That genesis brought Everett into discussions with TROY Chancellor Dr. Jack Hawkins Jr., and the role
that University could play in the state with an expanded emphasis on science and technology, Dr. Hawkins said. In addition to the gift, Everett
has agreed to be a member of the School’s advisory board of industry leaders. Rinehart said the School would focus on five primary areas:
biomedical sciences; water resources and environmental science; manufacturing technology concentrating on aviation and automotive sectors;
food safety; and computer science with a focus on software development.
Troy University receives check for trails project in Janice Hawkins Park - Troy University today received a $5,000 check from the
Choctawhatchee, Pea and Yellow Rivers Watershed Management Authority to cover the cost of phase one of an ecological trail system and
outdoor classroom in Janice Hawkins Park on the Troy Campus. The funds were used to install a system of trails through the park using natural
materials and included signage to provide educational opportunities along the trail. Authority Executive Director Barbara Gibson and Authority
Board Chairman Jack Pelfrey and board member Alan Boothe presented the check to Dr. Jack Hawkins, Jr., Chancellor, Dr. Jim Bookout, Senior
Vice Chancellor of Finance and Business Affairs, and Mark Salmon, Director of the University’s Physical Plant. The walking trails were the latest
phase of the Janice Hawkins Park project. The park currently includes seating areas, walkways surrounded by plants and sculptures and an
amphitheater. Previous grants by the Authority have assisted in the elimination of invasive species of plants throughout the park.
Troy University Chancellor honored with Confucius Institute award - Dr. Jack Hawkins, Jr., Chancellor of Troy University, was one of nine
university chancellors worldwide and the only one in North America to receive the World Confucius Institute’s Individual Performance
Excellence Award during the World Confucius Institute Conference in Xiamen, China. The annual conference celebrated the 10th anniversary of
the Confucius Institute program, designed to promote Chinese language education and cultural awareness, and honored outstanding
contributions in both Confucius Institute of the Year awards and outstanding individual performances. Dr. Hawkins received the award from
Liu Yandong, Vice Premier of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China on behalf of the CI headquarters in Beijing. There are currently
475 Confucius Institutes worldwide, including 120 in the United States.
Troy University’s Hall School of Journalism and Communication ranked in top 10 by survey - Troy University’s Hall School of Journalism and
Communication has been ranked in the top 10 in the Radio Television Digital News Association’s 2014 Best College Journalism Schools survey.
The Hall School was ranked at No. 6 in the poll, which surveyed members of the Association, as well as news professionals through
TVWeek.com, to determine the top 20 schools. Dr. Jeff Spurlock, Director of the Hall School of Journalism and Communication, said the
ranking represents the quality of the programs offered and the hard work of the School’s dedicated faculty and students. Since opening its
doors more than 40 years ago, the Hall School of Journalism and Communication has developed a strong reputation for preparing students in a
high quality, academically rigorous program that includes a combination of classroom instruction and hands-on experience. The Hall school
offers majors in multimedia journalism, broadcast journalism or communication arts. Public relations, advertising, media performance,
photojournalism and sports information contracts are also offered. In addition, the Hall School also offers a Master’s degree in Strategic
Communications. Students in the Hall School benefit from hands-on experience through opportunities to work with student media, including
The Tropolitan, the University’s student newspaper; Troy University Public Radio; and TrojanVision, the University’s television station that
includes three live, student-run newscasts a day.
Amy Owens wins Vergil Parks McKinley Award at Troy University - Amy Owens, departmental secretary in the School of Nursing at Troy
University, has won the University’s Vergil Parks McKinley Award. Owens, who has been employed by the University since 2009, received the
award from Dr. John Dew, Senior Vice Chancellor for Student Services and Administration, during the University’s annual Christmas luncheon
on the Troy Campus. Owens was nominated by Dr. John Miller, associate dean of the College of Health and Human Services. The McKinley
Award is the highest honor that Troy University gives to a non-faculty staff member. It is presented quarterly to an employee who has
demonstrated outstanding attitude, innovation and work ethic. The award was established by the late John McKinley, former Texaco CEO, in
honor of his father, Vergil Parks .
