A quote for Valentine’s : “We’re all a little weird. And life is a little weird. And when we find someone whose weirdness is compatible with
ours, we join up with them and fall into mutually satisfying weirdness—and call it love—true love.” - Robert Fulghum, True Love

A New Year Detox
After the over-indulgences of food
consumption during the Christmas and
New Year periods, the coming Springtime
is the ideal time to think about an
internal spring clean (a detox) and to also
lose some of the pounds and inches we
may have accumulated over the winter
months.
To many people, the term ‘detoxification’
is associated with just getting rid of
toxins in the body but it is actually a
much more complicated process than
this and involves converting toxins into
something else. Our bodies have a very
efficient system of fluids in the form of
blood and lymph, that circulate, pick up
and transport toxins to different organs,
such as the liver, the kidneys, the colon,
the lungs and the skin where they are
neutralised and then excreted. Toxins are
produced by the body’s own metabolic
processes, such as digestion but also by
the chemicals we are exposed to daily
in our environments such as plastics,
metals, pesticides and pollution. Our
toxic load can be severely compromised
by poor lifestyles, stress and inadequate
nutrition. Symptoms of toxicity can
include, tiredness, allergies, bloating,
indigestion, constipation/diarrhoea, skin
complaints, sinus problems, PMT, poor
circulation and joint problems.
Naturopathic detoxification or cleanses
are not fads but about putting in place
sensible protocols that will assist the
body’s own natural detoxification
pathways. This will involve looking at
lifestyle, diet and exercise plus how
stress may be impacting on our overall
wellbeing.

Hospice shops need donations
St Elizabeth Hospice is appealing for
donations of good quality items for it’s
shops in Saxmundham and Leiston.
The local charity needs donations
of goods such as clothes, shoes,
accessories, toys, games, books, DVDs,
and home-ware to resell in it’s shops to
raise vital funds for Hospice care.
Jason Rudderham, St Elizabeth Hospice’s
Head of Retail, said:
“All our Hospice shops are well supported
by the community, whether that’s
through donating items, shopping, or
volunteering in the stores – and this
month we need your help as we’re
running low on stock.”
“Any items you can donate will be
gratefully received and all the money
generated from our shops goes towards
providing care and support for our
patients and their families.”
If you would like to support your local
Hospice by donating items, please drop
them off at your nearest St Elizabeth
shop in the High Street during opening
hours, Monday to Saturday, 9.30am –
4pm.

Suffolk Family Carers
Suffolk Family Carers is a local charity
that provides information, support and
guidance to Family Carers around Suffolk.
We have been offering our services for
over 25 years and one of the things we
have learnt during that time is that people
caring for another person at home,
perhaps a family member or friend don’t
usually see themselves as a Family Carer,
they just see it as part of being husband,
wife, father, mother, daughter, son, friend
etc. Because of this, it becomes so easy to
forget the importance of your own health
and wellbeing as all of your physical and
emotional effort and energy is spent on
looking after that person, and others who
may be involved such as siblings. You may
feel that your own needs do not matter at
this time, but in order to provide care and
support you do need to keep your own
batteries charged.
In 2015 Suffolk Family Carers will be
working with our hospice colleagues
in Suffolk to offer an information and
support programme for those people
caring for someone nearing the end of
their life. There will be a series of five
informal sessions that offer information
and an opportunity to reflect and gain
support from others in a similar situation.
The programme will run around the
County with the first ones starting end of
January. It’s aim is to improve the Family
Carer’s own situation and that of the
person they Care For.

News from Framlingham and Saxmundham Cats Protection
Fram and Sax Cats Protection’s plans for fund raising for the coming year and our 25th Anniversary celebrations are well under way.
We shall have a full programme of events to attend, cat homing fairs, talks, campaigns and, of course, continuing to care for and
homing cats and kittens.
We were delighted that in recent months homes have been found for some of our more challenging cases; cats with medical
conditions which may continue for the remainder of their lives. There was George with a skin complaint, Linton with renal problems
and Ben with a gastric condition. Whilst in our care and possibly continuing when they go to their new homes, cats such as these
may need extra, often costly, medical treatments. This could not be achieved without financial aid from our many supporters. If you
could help us in any way we would love to hear from you. Perhaps you could become a sponsor, make a one off donation, become a
branch member, leave a gift in your will or join us as a fund-raiser or fosterer. Please call us or see our website for details of how you
could help.
Catology. A cat has about twenty four movable whiskers (vibrissae), in four sets on each upper lip on either side of its nose, in a
pattern as individual as our finger prints. A cat’s whiskers are more than twice as thick as ordinary cat hairs and their roots are three
times deeper in a cat’s tissue than other hairs. They have numerous nerve endings at their base, which give cats extraordinarily
detailed information about nearby air movements and objects with which they make physical contact. They enable a cat to know
that it is near obstacles without it needing to see them. Whiskers can also
indicate your cat’s mood; whiskers point forward when a cat is inquisitive and
friendly, but lie flat on the face when the cat is being defensive or aggressive.
Featured cats looking for a Home: These two handsome young lads are Salsa
and Jazz. They have two tabby brothers Waltz and Rumba and tortoiseshell
sister Tango. Bundles of fun, they could be homed singly, in pairs or in any
combination. Could you give any of these gorgeous kittens a home?
See our website: www.framandsax.cats.org.uk; facebook: www.facebook.com/
framsaxcats or telephone 01728 723499 for more information about the Dancing
kittens, other cats in our care and how you can support us. Please remember to
mention where you heard about us.

Working for Wildlife
It’s just over a year since the big flood and Suffolk Wildlife Trust’s Hazlewood
Marshes reserve on the edge of Aldeburgh is looking very different.
Formerly a grazing marsh for many years, the sea has had a dramatic effect.
On the night of the flood, the river wall at Hazlewood was breached in 2
places but damage extended along significant sections of the wall, making
it likely to fail at other locations in the coming years. The Environment
Agency estimated the repair and reinstatement costs to be in excess of
£1million, which couldn’t be justified using their cost/benefit analysis.
Given this situation, a “go with the flow” approach was decided to be the
only viable way forward. As a result, Hazlewood has changed from a grazing
marsh to an inter-tidal reserve and the results are becoming very interesting.
The twice daily tidal inundation is already leading to the establishment of
new inter-tidal habitats with extensive areas of tidal mudflat and regenerating
saltmarsh around the margins of the reserve. There is now a depth of over
18 inches of mud in places - a very encouraging sign - coupled with the appearance
of saltmarsh plants such as samphire and sea aster suggesting that new saltmarsh habitat
will develop quite rapidly.

It’s now a magnet for birds so
is very much worth a look, with
astonishing numbers using
the site including significant
numbers of black-tailed godwit,
lots of little egrets (pictured)
and herons and many others.
Although the hide is inaccessible
at the moment, with over a
metre of water covering the
pathway at times, the plan is to
raise the path to the hide this
spring so it’s accessible at all
states of tide. As a result, the
reserve will be open again by
May and there will also be a new
viewing platform just off the
Sailors path. A series of islands
will be constructed this year
to create breeding habitat for
waders with avocet being the
primary target species – they
are one of the main reasons
for the Special Protection Area
designation.
Although it’s great to get out and
see such places as Hazlewood
on a fresh winter’s day, it’s also
good to dream of the sun and
maybe plan some holidays. On

Couple’s backing for innovative project
A former firefighter with terminal cancer
has spoken of the huge benefits which an
innovative resource centre planned for
Halesworth would bring to both himself
and his wife as a campaign raising money
for the facility reaches the 60% mark.
Bud Rennie, who lives in Holton with Pat,
his wife of 51 years, described plans for
an Information and Support Centre (ISC),
which will provide services for people with
life-limiting illnesses, as “fantastic.”
The 74-year-old has been fighting various
forms of cancer since 2009, and was told
three years ago his illness is terminal.
Since then, he has undergone regular
chemotherapy to prevent any further
spread – and has done so with a smile on
his face and his supportive wife by his side.
The couple – who face a lengthy journey
every time Bud needs treatment or other
support – have now backed plans for the
ISC and encouraged others to do the same.
“I had always been in reasonably good
health, so this was my first excursion into
the NHS in nearly 70 years,” said Bud, who
worked in health physics at Sizewell A for
27 years and spent 15 years as a retained
firefighter in Halesworth.
“When I was told the cancer had spread
and was everywhere, I didn’t think I would
see the week out. I’ve now been in the
medical system for six years and have a lot
of respect for the NHS and am very grateful
for the care I’ve received.”
understanding a diagnosis, counselling and
bereavement support.
“We were absolutely delighted to hear
about the idea for the ISC,” said Pat, who
is 71. “It’s a 60 mile round trip every time
we need to go to hospital for scans or
treatment, so to be able to access some
of the other sources of support closer to
home would be really helpful.
“At times over the past six years we’ve felt
like we were existing in a bubble. At these
moments, having someone to talk to about
the way you’re feeling is really important.
The ISC would provide that and would
make a real difference.
“Chemotherapy can put stress on both
the person who is ill and the person who
is supporting them. Again, being able to
go to the ISC for extra support and a few
pointers about how best to cope would be
fantastic.”
In addition to help and support, the
centre will also act as venue where other
organisations, such as Alzheimer’s or
cancer support groups, can meet. Positive
and family-friendly, the atmosphere in the
ISC will be comfortable and informal so
that people can relax, share their anxieties
and get clear answers to any questions
Halesworth Community Nursing Care Fund
(HCNCF) is driving an ongoing campaign to
raise £714,000 to build the ISC for people
in north east Suffolk and southNorfolk
who have cancer and other life-limiting
illnesses.
It aims to bring a full range of holistic
services closer to home for patients, their
families and carers, including benefits
advice, wig-fitting, children and family
support, complementary therapies, help
they may have.
“Lots of people who live in this area rely
on public transport, and travelling when
you’re ill can really take it out of you,” said
Bud. “So having this sort of centre closer to
home would be fantastic.
“People would be able to go there and find
out more about what will happen to them.
We had no idea what to expect when the
treatment started – having someone to talk
to who understands, who has perhaps had
personal experience if a family member
had been ill, would have made a real
difference. The ISC will do a lot of good for
a lot of people.”
The couple are now determined to enjoy
life as much as possible while spending
time with their family.
“When we were told Bud’s cancer was
terminal, we were determined not to give
up the fight,” said Pat. “We are now most
grateful for what we have, appreciate every
day and do our best to make the most out
of life.”
Nearly £440,000 has been raised towards
the ISC so far. To find out more, or to make
a donation, visitwww.halesworthhealth.

Royal Anglian and Suffolk
Regiment OCA Report
The Battle of Neuve Chapelle –
10-13 March 1915
Firstly, our Christmas Buffet Dance
was an excellent night, well attended
and much enjoyed by all. Once again,
many thanks to Ron Freeman and
family for their organization, Ray
Saxby for running the draw and Alf
Watson who stood in as MC, when
our President, John Richardson was
indisposed.
‘H’ Company of the 4th Battalion
Suffolk Regiment Territorial Force was
from Leiston and District.
The Battalion as part of the Jullundur
Brigade, Lahore Division of the Indian
Corps attacked the Bois de Biez on 12
March under the command of Colonel
Frank Garrett.
Alf thanked Bernie and his wife, who
presented Taff Gillingham with a
cheque, and thanks too to Taff himself
for the impromptu talk on the Suffolks,
and last but not least by any means,
- many, many thanks to Linda and
her ladies at Leiston Charity Shop for
their donation to our funds, and also
to John and Jenny Murphy for their
contribution, and for bringing a huge
party along - always welcome !!
Now this year, our AGM is on
Wednesday 4th March, 2015 at 1930
hours. We will be sending a letter of
reminder to all old comrades, and
hope that some who don’t come to our
monthly meetings, might come along
and give some support. We wish to
keep up our work as long as we can, remember we are the last of the many
thousands who served in that fine
regiment. Just a little piece of history,
perhaps?
We, as a committee are working on this
year’s events, so any suggestions would
be helpful - please let us know.
Mr J S Waddell reports in his
publication: Illustrated Memorial of
the Great War in relation to Leiston
and District – ‘some 70 local casualties
being reported, about 18 or 20 of these
being killed’.

Chairman's Remarks
If you have access to it, please check the Town Council website
(www.saxmundham.org) for news of events in the town. The
library in Street Farm Road will always help with information if
you don’t have internet access at home.
As the last magazine was written before the holidays, I must
start this month by thanking the Saxmundham Welfare Charities
for providing Christmas lunch in the Market Hall for
Saxmundham residents who would have otherwise have been
on their own. Unfortunately I was unable to join them this time
but I understand it was another enjoyable occasion which I hope
they will be able to repeat in future years.
We have now received planning permission to site a temporary
building on the Memorial Field to provide facilities for the youth
of the town. Cllr. Plant has been working hard on this and it
should be in place by the Spring. I think we are also closer to
starting some drainage work on the Field. Negotiations to
purchase the police station are still ongoing but I’m no longer
going to try to estimate a completion date for this.
Looking further ahead, one of the chairman’s duties is to
organise the Annual Town Meeting which is scheduled for
Monday 20th April 2015 in the Market Hall. Because of the
forthcoming elections we have to be very careful not to use any
official meeting or office in a way which might influence voter
choice. I am intending to follow last year’s format with the hall
open from 6 to 9pm for the public to view charity stalls and have
light refreshment. The formal meeting will take place at 7:15pm.
This time I will not be making door-to-door deliveries of the
agenda.
Cllr. John Fisher.

4617. TO RECEIVE A REPORT FROM THE FINANCE
COMMITTEE AND CONSIDER ITS
RECOMMENDATIONS:
•To approve the monthly Finance Report to the end of
December 2014 – Cllr Fisher proposed as correct, seconded
Cllr Mrs Sculley. Unanimously agreed. Motion carried.
•To consider the following requests for a donation:
•Headway – Suffolk local charity that offers rehabilitation,
support and care to people with brain injuries. Cllr Plant
proposed a donation of £100, seconded by Cllr Mrs
Andrews. One abstention – Cllr Fisher. Motion carried on
majority vote.
•CATS Coastal Accessible Transport Service Ltd – Cllr Willet
declared an interest. CATS operate a ‘not for profit’ basis to
provide community transport across coastal Suffolk from
Bawdsey to Lowestoft. Cllr Plant proposed £200 but Cllr
Tricker advised that this service was frequently used by the
frail and elderly and those who need a vehicle. He thought
they should receive more and proposed £400, seconded by
Cllr Mrs Andrews. Cllr Plant abstained and Cllr Willett
unable to vote. Motion carried on majority.
•Saxmundham Museum – a Charity that entirely relies on
support of volunteers. Cllrs Mrs Andrews and Mrs Sculley
declared an interest. Saxmundham Museum needs to
ensure they have a certain amount of money in the bank to
qualify for accreditation. They have a target of £5000 to
raise within the next few months. The Museum is an integral
part of Saxmundham particularly for tourism, archives and
needs to stay viable. They would like the Town Council to
donate £1,200.00. Cllr Willett proposed we donate £1200,
seconded by Cllr Plant. Unanimously agreed – 2 Councillors
unable to vote. Motion carried.
•To receive an update on the Police Station purchase
progress - Cllr Plant advised that the Town Council were still
negotiating the purchase. However in the local newspaper
on Saturday there was an article regarding various Police
Stations advising that Saxmundham Police would be moving
into Saxmundham Fire Station within the next two or three
years. Apparently this is due to a grant from Central
Government encouraging the Police and the Fire Services to
share premises. Cllr Plant advised that we should hear from
Suffolk Constabulary in late January/early February.
The meeting was closed to enable the reports from the
County Council and the District as neither were present at
the allotted time.
4618. REPORT FROM THE COUNTY COUNCILLOR:
County Cllr Michael Gower reported the following:
•The Energy from waste is operating successfully and a visit
can be arranged for anyone who wishes to visit. This
processes waste which would have previously gone to
landfill.
•9 new gritters have been purchased and a further 29
upgraded. They have been used this winter but obviously
will no doubt prove their worth in the weeks to come with
inclement weather forecast.
•The Rights of Way committee are meeting on the 14
January to discuss the provision of yellow lines in Brook
Farm Road. Cllr Plant enquired as to whether monies for
this particular project could be carried over to the next
financial year and Cllr Gower confirmed this as correct.
•Cllr Gower will be providing book tokens for children who
complete the summer reading challenge at our local Library.
4619. TO RECEIVE A REPORT FROM THE DISTRICT
COUNCILLORS:
Cllr Sir Batho had sent his apologies.
Cllr Mrs Andrews queried whether the Councillors had
received the email regarding the meeting about the NHS
services to be held in the Market Hall on the 23rd January.
She advised that Norman Lamb will pay a visit to
Saxmundham this coming Thursday which is the first time
we have had a Cabinet Minister come to Saxmundham. Cllr
Mrs Andrews attended a meeting for the North Area
regarding the monies from the section 106 agreement.
Originally Hopkins were due to give £200,000 towards the
One Stop Shop which unfortunately did not materialise.
However Dr Havard is keen to set up a training service for
young GP’s and a small annex at the back of the surgery is
needed and he has already put in a planning application for
this. Dr Havard can manage on £100,000 and Hopkins
Homes have agreed that they will give him this amount.
However the remaining £100,000 will be returned to Hopkin
Homes. It was thought that, fundamentally, Section 106
should be used for the benefit of the town and future
planning applications will need to be very carefully
scrutinised.
Meeting re-opened.
4620. TO RECEIVE A REPORT FROM THE
COMMUNICATIONS COMMITTEE AND CONSIDER ITS
RECOMMENDATIONS: Cllr Tricker reported:
•It was unanimously agreed to recommend that the STC
website address should be included in e-mails sent by the
Town Clerk and Chairman. This can be set-up as an
automatic signature for all e-mails sent on behalf of the
council. Unanimously agreed. Motion carried.
•A recommendation was given for the Council insert in
Saxmundham News include a prominent box, on the first
page, stating ‘for the very latest news, please visit
www.saxmundham.org:The recommendation is to include
this as a header on the first page of the insert. The wording
should be included within a boxed-border. Unanimously
agreed. Motion carried.
•To review and make recommendations to produce an up-todate Town Map highlighting amenities. Cllr Fisher has
already produced a new hand-drawn map of the town. It
was agreed that this should be used as the basis for
generating. A2 sized map which would fold-down to A5 size
with printing front and reverse. Side 1: Showing the town
map, plus numbered amenities, centrally with advertising in
the border. Side 2: Alphabetical street index, numerical key
to amenities and grid references. Remainder of space to be
filled by advertising. A first print-run of 5,000 is
recommended as there are approximately 2,000 households
within Saxmundham. The maps should be free-issue. The
first 2,000 copies to be included as an insert to the
Saxmundham News. Adjoining parish councils would also be
supplied with a number of copies. Further copies to be
obtainable from the local supermarkets, library and museum.
Cllr Tricker will contact Leiston Press to discuss the viability
of the advertising covering production costs. Unanimously
agreed to proceed. Motion carried.
•To review and make recommendations to improve Council
Noticeboards. Make repairs to the two boards outside the
Market Hall. The Clerk has this already in hand. The boards
outside Waitrose supermarket to remain as current.
Following successful purchase of the Saxmundham police
station by the council, a new board will be required for this
site. It should then be investigated as to whether an
additional board might be placed outside the Tesco
supermarket in proximity to the bus shelter. We would need
to talk to Highways and investigate costs and technicalities.
•The website is regularly being updated and the stats will be
looked at next time. Elections – this has already been put on
the front page.
4621. TO REVIEW AND COMMENT ON THE FOLLOWING
PLANNING APPLICATIONS AND TO CONSIDER
AUTHORISATION FOR THE CLERK TO MAKE
DECISIONS ON SOME PLANNING APPLICATIONS:
•Cllr Fisher proposed that the Council authorise the Clerk to
respond to planning applications on their behalf as some
applications need a prompt response provided the Clerk has
circulated plans to the Councillors for their comments and
nobody has asked for a whole Council decision. Seconded
by Cllr Plant. Unanimously agreed. Motion carried.
DC/14/3776/FUL - Mr & Mrs K Armstrong - Happy Days
Retro Vacations, Wardspring Farm, Leiston Road,

DC/14/3902/FUL - Musker McIntyre 30 High Street,

DC/14/3972/LBC - Mr M Thomas - 30 South Entrance Single-storey rear extension. -The Town Council had no
objections.
The Clerk will circulate two new plans that have just come in.
(Action).
•TO RECEIVE AN UPDATE REGARDING LAND
ALLOCATION FOR FUTURE HOUSING:
Cllr Mrs Jardine attending a meeting on this and advised the
following:-.I attended my first working party meeting covering
the SCDC Local Plan on 08/01/15 at the Council Offices.
The plan sets the policy framework for development and
growth over the next 10 to 15 years for the whole district
until 2027. It covers all aspects of housing, commercial and
employment development.
There is currently an Issues and Options consultation in
progress until 27 February 2015. Details can be viewed on
the SCDC website and comments are requested. A drop-in
public consultation will be held in the Market Hall on
29/01/15 from 2.00-4.00 pm. Posters relating to this will be
provided by the Planning Dept.
4622. TO RECEIVE AN UPDATE REGARDING THE RELAUNCH OF THE WEEKLY MARKET:
Cllr Gower informed the Council that we will be receiving
some monies for our re-launch from his Locality Budget. Cllr
Howe advised that we have yet to find some new
stallholders. Three of our shops have expressed an interest
but as yet have not actually had a stall. He went on to say
that despite all the hard work of himself, our Town Clerk and
her Clerical Assistant to promote the Market, no other
stallholders or musicians have come forward as yet.
4623. TO CONSIDER THE ARRANGEMENTS FOR ST.
GEORGES’ WEEKEND 25/26 APRIL 2015:
Cllr Mrs Jardine explained that our Sunday event clashes
with an important centenary event in Theberton which we
need to respect together with an attendance from a number
of people who would normally have come to our Parade.
Cllr Fisher proposed we do not have any events on the
Sunday but continue with other events if the working party
receive sufficient support for them and agree. Seconded by
Cllr Mrs Jardine. Unanimously agreed by majority. Motion
carried. Cllr Mrs Jardine advised that the majority of the
letters produced were hand delivered but the response from
the Business Forum has been very poor. However she and
Cllr Miss Hailey are willing to go round the town and do the
Best Dressed Window competition and also count the
number of flag poles around the town. Cllr Mrs Jardine said
a decision will be made at the next working party meeting as
to other events to be held on the Saturday. Cllr Willett
offered to get all flags and shields down from storage to
inspect their condition. Cllr Tricker proposed we purchase
around 30-40 new flags and put aside £600 for the purchase
and erection of them. Cllr Mrs Andrews seconded this.
Unanimously agreed. Motion carried.
4624. TO CONSIDER FUNDING OF HIGH STREET
CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS:
Cllr Howe advised that he thought we should take over the
decorations of the High Street at Christmas. The Town
Council will purchase the small trees, erect and take them
down after receiving permission from the individual
businesses. Cllr Tricker proposed a paper should be written
to be brought back to the Council on everything that needs
to be done. Action. Clerk to contact Julian Barclay to obtain
a price for the erection and taking down of all small trees
and our own large tree. Seconded by Cllr Mrs Sculley.
Unanimously agreed. Motion carried.
4625.
TO
RECEIVE
REPORTS
FROM
REPRESENTATIVES OF VARIOUS OTHER BODIES
INCLUDING WORKING PARTIES:
Cllr Howe advised that the AGM of BOS will take place next
Monday where he will be stepping down as Chairman as will
the Vice Chairman, Peter Ewart. He felt it was disappointing
that so few businesses wished to join together to promote
the town but preferred to continue doing their own thing. Cllr
Plant will be attending a Sizewell meeting later this week.
Cllr Miss Hailey attended the Saxmundham, Kelsale and
Benhall Mobility, Pedestrian and Cycle Project meeting and
advised the following:- Plans for the 1st quarter included
funding and resources; local school involvement; ‘Rights of
Way’ and working with the communities wishes on the
approach to South Entrance; plans to start an 'Impact Audit’
using Bright Space to coordinate and advise.
Cllr Fisher expressed his congratulations to Cllr Mrs
Andrews who received her Award.
4626. DATE AND TIME OF NEXT MEETING: 9 FEBRUARY
2015 at 7.15pm
4627.To exclude the public under the Public Bodies
(admission to meetings) Act 1960 on the grounds that
publicity would be prejudicial to public interest by reasons of
the confidential nature of the following business being
transacted:
•TO CONSIDER STAFF PAY AND CONDITIONS:
Meeting closed at 10.05pm
Saxmundham News is independently edited and

BURNT BY FUEL BILLS? LEISTON CAB CAN HELP
As the winter cold starts to bite harder, Leiston CAB is
passing on 10 top tips about energy saving as follows:
1. check your bills carefully and read your meter regularly so
that you can see how much you are using and whether the
charges look right;
2. talk to your supplier straightaway if you think your bill is
wrong of if you have problems paying;
3. if money is tight, talk to the CAB, as they can check to see
if you have an entitlement to benefit and can also advise on
possible funding help;
4. make sure you are on the cheapest tariff – your supplier or an
accredited switching website can help;
5. think about fixed price tariffs, which can work out cheaper in
the long term and can help you budget;
6. if you use a pre-payment meter, remember that standing
charges will be added daily so you need to keep your meter
topped up;
7. whatever fuel you use, you might be able to benefit by
joining with your neighbours and combining buying power;
8. make your home energy efficient – there are schemes to help
with this (but don’t get caught out by possible scams in this
area!);
9. save money and energy – switch things off rather than
leaving them on standby; and
10. see if you can achieve lower energy bills with the Energy
Saving Trust’s Home Energy Check hec.est.org.uk.
The Leiston Bureau can help you with all of this and with any
other issues and is open to everyone and on any subject as
follows:
Monday 10.00 am – 1.30 pm
Tuesday10.00 am – 2.30 pm
Wednesday – closed but open at the Meadow Children’s Centre
in Saxmundham 10 am – 12 noon
Thursday 10.00 am – 2.30 pm

Aldeburgh, Suffolk, cycling anti-clockwise
5000 MILES
If fundraising is top sport, Maggie Scorer
will certainly be facing quite a challenge in
March 2015.
Brought up in the coastal Suffolk town
of Orford, this 65 year old mother of four
and grandmother of 8 already leads a
very busy life. A landscape gardener, B&B
owner and ferry(wo)man at Butley Ferry,
Maggie still finds time to potter about on
her sailing boat on the river Ore and Alde
and compete in weekly races at the local
yacht club. Of course, she always has
the company of her faithful companion
Oscar – a keen tail-wagger and fetcher-ofsticks. Oscar is a seven year old Golden
Retriever who has already accompanied
Maggie sailing halfway around the world.
Together, they plan to take on their next
challenge head (or wheel) first. For this
next feat, a fundraising motivation is at
heart – the ultimate goal being to raise
£25,000, in aid of two very personal
causes - LEUKAEMIA AND LYMPHOMA
RESEARCH and SANDS. Maggie’s son-inlaw suffers from a blood cancer disorder
called Myelofibrosis. Blood disorders
affect someone in the UK every 20
minutes. He received a life-saving bone
marrow transplant through the Anthony
12
researching all types of blood cancers in
order to improve the lives of all patients
suffering from blood cancers such as
Leukaemia, Lymphoma and Myeloma.
Sands stillbirth & neonatal death charity
is pushing campaigns to help prevent
unnecessary stillbirths, of which 17
happen everyday in the UK. Their
dedicated care for mothers who suffer
such terrible losses is vital, and all of this
requires funding too. Starting in March
2015, Maggie will spend five months of
her life cycling around Britain’s coastline,
covering some 5000 miles. Having always
explored the coast from the sea, she plans
to see it from land.
Naturally, Oscar will be at hand to offer
encouragement during the moments
of strain whilst he’s
comfortably seated
in a Dutch-designed
‘Doggie Ride’
attached to the back
of the bike. She will
be doing the trip solo
and un-supported
although she hopes
that family and friends
will join her and Oscar
around the coast of Great Britain and
Scotland. She is hoping to be back in
Aldeburgh by the end of August. Based
on ca. 30 miles a day, the whole trip will
take her (with a bit of luck and the Great
British ‘summer’ weather permitting) 5
months. She’ll overnight in B&B’s, with
friends, or in her own words -“any old
barn will do”. As the date draws nearer,
local radio stations and newspapers will
be informed about time and date of the
start and updates will be given along the
route. Maggie will write a blog, and can
be followed on Facebook and Twitter.
Detailed information about making a
donation can be found on her website
www.dogontour.co.uk.

LOVE IS IN THE AIR AT FRIDAY STREET!
Brrrrrrrrr, it’s cold outside but it’s lovely and warm
up here at Friday Street. And to make your heart
beat a little faster, it’s the “Month of Love” and the
team have everything ready
to celebrate Valentine’s Day!
To set the pace, Corrina’s,
Exotic Fruit of The Month,
is Passion Fruit. Delicious
on its own eaten with a
teaspoon or poured over
a fruit salad or our own winter ice
cream. If you have never tried it, now’s
your chance to savour the romantic
flavour and see what happens next!
There is everything you would wish
here to celebrate with your loved one.
Wonderful roses, flower arrangements and house plants.
Beautiful hand decorated heart shaped cup cakes, luxury
chocolates, cards and gifts. They are all here together in the
Friday Street Tunnel of Love!
Even Master Butcher Ian
is feeling romantic, with a
special Valentine’s Day Steak
for Two offer. There is also a
fine range of wines and local
beers to warm the cockles of
your heart.
It may be frosty in Farnham but the
Seville oranges from sunny Spain
are here now. It’s marmalade time
and nothing is better than making
your own the Friday Street way. We
have all the ingredients
together including special
marmalade sugar. It’s easy
to make and full recipe
details are in-store and on our friendly website.
www.fridaystfarm.co.uk That is where you will
also find the delicious Soup of The Month, Creamy Celeriac.
Plus Corrina and Ian’s Dish of The Month, Belly of Pork with
Celeriac and Pear Mash, a real winter warmer. Bookmark
the website and make a point of checking it regularly, you are
sure to find some nice easy, culinary surprises.
It seems that everyone is in love with the Friday Street Café!
Tracy says that it is more popular than ever. It’s an all day affair,
starting with the Big Breakfast
at 8.30 and it’s a favourite local
coffee rendezvous. And here’s a
bonus. During February and
March you can bring a friend for
a free cup of coffee or tea. If they
have never been to Friday Street
this could be the start of a new
romance! Just clip the voucher
on the corner. Lunches,Teas and
Sunday Roast are so good that
it’s best to book.
FRIDAY STREET BUTCHERY
“We have been trying out Friday Specials with some of our regular customers and it has
proved so popular that we are now making these wonderful last minute bargains available
to everyone! This is how it works. On Thursday’s at 6.00pm, we load the website
www.fridaystfarm.co.uk with the Friday Specials. Wonderful meat at very special low
prices, usually a 10-20% discount. It can be anything really; braising steak, roasting
joints, lamb chops, mince, chicken fillets, sirloin steak, you name it. So how can
we do it? Well, as it gets to the end of the week our wholesalers can find
themselves over stocked, so they offer it to us and if it is the very best and a

Enhance your skills in 2015 with
a Sage training course
By Carl Page, Partner – Ensors Chartered Accountants
Are you new to Sage
accounting software and
need some guidance? Or do
you simply need a refresher
course to ensure you have
the normal day-to-day tasks
working as efficiently as
possible? Our Sage training
workshops can help and
have been designed to
provide you
with an accessible and
flexible training facility. Our trainer, Liz Jones, is an
experienced Sage user and an accountant which
enables her to fully understand the issues you face in
your day-to-day accounting processes and provide you
with practical solutions.
We have two hands-on workshops coming up with
the first one on Wednesday 15 April being designed
for beginners. We’ll go back to basics and show you
how to set up structures, post invoices, deal with
payments, receipts and bank transfers, carry out bank
reconciliations and prepare VAT returns.
Our second workshop on Thursday 4 June is designed
for those who have some working knowledge of Sage
but perhaps feel they aren’t using it to its full potential.
Within this workshop we’ll cover journals, recurring
entries, reporting, management accounts and budgets
and project costing.
For both workshops delegates will be provided with
individual online access to training software. We will
be using Sage 50 Accounts software (formally known
as Sage Line 50) and comprehensive learning packs
will be provided to support you as you implement your
learning back in your workplace. We will also limit the
numbers attending the workshops to ensure you get
the individual attention you need and cover any specific
issues.
Both workshops are being held at our Saxmundham
Office, Blyth House located along Rendham Road in
Saxmundham, so we are able to provide you with
ample free parking and light refreshments will be served
throughout. Workshop registration is from 8.45am for a
9am start and we will aim to finish at 12.30pm.
The cost of attending each workshop is £30 + Vat (£36 in
total), for more information or to book your place please
email Amy on [email protected] or call her on
01473 220051.
This information is given by way of general guidance

SAXMUNDHAM SPORTS SCORPIONS FC
UNDER13s – THE SEASON SO FAR…..
Despite relegation to division 3 last year the Scorpions
finished the season on a high by winning an exciting
final of the Plate 4-3 after extra time. We therefore
started this season in confident mood hoping to
bounce straight back up. However, having lost our
first three league games we felt we were in for another
difficult year. The turning point was converting a 1-0
deficit into a 2-1 win late on in our fourth match
against Sporting 87.
As I write, the Scorpions have been on a winning run of
eight league matches placing us third place in the league. Our only defeat was in the cup against second division Claydon, losing 3-2
after extra time in a very competitive match.
Since the Xmas break we have played one match winning 4-0 against Bacton with the boys playing some excellent football in testing
conditions of wind and rain. The goalscorers were Billy (2), Jake and Kyle.
There have been some fantastic performances with every member of the squad playing their part and it now remains to be seen
whether the Scorpions can continue their impressive run to clinch promotion back into division 2.
Our thanks go to kit sponsors Ensors Chartered Accountants and Innovativo, together with everyone who helps out at
training and on match days. For more information please visit the Saxmundham Sports FC website www.clubwebsite.co.uk/
