CABE 2015 Registration Brochure

CABE 2015
2-DAY INTENSIVE INSTITUTES
Pre-registration is required. Fee of $125 includes lunch both days!
March 4th & 5th ~ 10:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. (with the exception of GLAD®)
1) Kagan Structures for Active Engagement with English
Learners (K-12)
Presenter(s): Rachel Treaster, Kagan Publishing & Professional
Development
Boost academic achievement with Kagan Structures: simple, research-based
instructional strategies that make learning more active and interactive. You
master the Seven Keys to Cooperative Learning including Team Formation,
Building Will, Management Techniques, Embedded Social Skills, PIES Principles,
and Structures!
2) Science & Math Instructional Strategies for English Learners
– Building Academic Success for ELs through Content and the
Common Core Standards (6-12)
Presenter(s): Ron Rohac, Rohac Ed Solutions
This hands-on, teacher friendly workshop is loaded with practical applications
and strategies that meet the Common Core State Standards. Participants
will work through a number of lesson plans and activities in science
and mathematics, demonstrating how to build academic language and
literacy components for English Learners into content lesson plans without
compromising the grade-level concepts or curriculum standards.
3) Unpacking and Implementing California’s Powerful, New ELD
Standards (K-8)
Presenter(s): Elizabeth Jiménez, CABE PDS
The new California ELA/ELD Framework calls for ELD to be both a dedicated
subject and a focus of all content areas. This hands-on session is an excellent
introduction to some very positive ways to help make that happen. Participants
will have the opportunity to deeply understand the new ELD standards and will
work with a template and routine for determining the foundational skills and
knowledge English Learners need as they work across the curriculum.
S CH O O L S I T E V I S I T S
Pre-Registration is required
4) Project GLAD® Two-Day Research & Theory Workshop* (K-8)
*Note time change
March 49:30 am to 4:30 pm
March 510:30 am to 5:30 pm
Presenter(s): Orange County Department of Education
Project GLAD® National Training Center Team
Nicole Chavez, Kelley White, Diana Hernandez, Susan McCoy
This institute provides the theoretical and research base for Project GLAD®
classroom implementation and practices. Participants will explore the Project
GLAD® training model and practical classroom strategies designed to promote
academic language, literacy, and cross-cultural respect in the classroom. All
participants will meet the 2-Day Research & Theory requirement of Project
GLAD® Tier I training. To complete Project GLAD® Tier I training, participants
will need to complete the 4/5 Day Classroom Demonstration sessions outside
of the conference setting.
5) An Overview of Two-Way Bilingual/Dual Immersion
Programs: Authentic 21st Century Learning for all
Students (K-12)
Presenter(s): 2-Way CABE Board Members
This institute is designed for participants who are interested in developing
or beginning a two-way bilingual/dual immersion program. Participants will
interact with experienced practitioners as they provide a critical overview of
the two-way bilingual/dual immersion program including definitions, goals,
theoretical rationale, criteria for success, basic components for implementation
as well as showcase examples of innovative student projects.
a. Moving from Transitional to Developmental Program:
This school’s Bilingual Program has been in existence for many years, but has
recently changed from a Transitional Bilingual model to a Developmental
Bilingual Education model. The school’s teachers and principal are
actively working to strengthen and expand the DBE Program, which now
accommodates children in all grades levels. The DBE Program uses Paired
Literacy as its foundational approach. DBE students at all grade levels engage
in a literacy block in Spanish and English, and, in all but one content area,
receive instruction in both languages.
b. One-Way 50:50 Mandarin Program & Spanish Enrichment Program:
In this program students are instructed in English and Chinese; alternating
between morning and afternoon from kindergarten through 5th grade. A
third language, Spanish language enrichment, begins in kindergarten and
continues through 2nd grade with formal Spanish instruction (approximately
200 minutes per week) starting in 3rd grade.
c. Structured English Immersion Program: Located minutes from U.S.
Mexico border, this elementary school is making remarkable gains with
English Learners. The Collaboration Model has been instrumental to student
growth. Grade levels continually analyze data, plan rigorous lessons, and
critically refine their craft. Writing linked to thinking and speaking is a schoolwide practice where teachers identify language functions and strategic
scaffolds to support ELs in meaningful contexts. The school culture reflects
a passion for learning and high expectations that is clearly evident in student
engagement.

a. Spanish Two-Way 90:10 K-8 School-wide Program: This school, located
2 minutes from the border is well known within the bilingual education
community for its cutting edge practices that date back several decades. Due
to its students’ high academic achievement in both English and Spanish, this
school was the recipient of a CABE Two-Way Immersion Seal of Excellence
Award. As you visit classrooms, you will see evidence of rich language
instruction, global awareness through service learning projects, technology,
CCSS implementation, and you will know why visitors say “Even the Walls
Talk.”
b. Spanish Two-Way 50:50 K-8 Program: This school-wide program
strategically utilizes research-based strategies to reach all students as a
way to impact social and educational change. The school tracks student
progress by using multiple formative assessments over the course of the
year. Teachers and administrators use data to guide teaching practices and
provide greater accountability and feedback on student learning and growth.
Students in all grades also participate in Micro Society. They design and
implement their own government, establish businesses and learn about the
global society.
3. High School Programs
a. New Arrival Center:
Students new to English, new to schooling, or new to English with
interrupted schooling, receive an accelerated course that prepares them
linguistically and academically to successfully participate in sheltered gradelevel classes. This is a self-contained class with a two hour ESL, and sheltered
Math, Science, and Social Studies instruction.
b. Academic Language Development Course:
Students identified as Long Term English Learners receive a rigorous course
of study designed to build and strengthen academic language through an
emphasis on critical reading and analytical writing. The course uses Kate

Project GLAD® National Training Center Team
Nicole Chavez, Kelley White, Diana Hernandez, Susan McCoy

classroom implementation and practices.
The school culture reflects
a passion for learning and high expectations that is clearly evident in student
engagement.

community for its cutting edge practices that date back several decades. Due
to its students’ high academic achievement in both English and Spanish, this
school was the recipient of a CABE Two-Way Immersion Seal of Excellence
The school tracks student
progress by using multiple formative assessments over the course of the

provide greater accountability and feedback on student learning and growth.

Math, Science, and Social Studies instruction.
b. Academic Language Development Course:
Students identified as Long Term English Learners receive a rigorous course
of study designed to build and strengthen academic language through an

The new California ELA/ELD Framework calls for ELD to be both a dedicated

They design and
implement their own government, establish businesses and learn about the
global society.
