Dear Parents,
Having settled into life at St Benedict’s for the 2015 school year we are now
moving into the exciting practices of teaching and learning. Our class teachers are
currently offering Parent/Teacher Evenings so that we (parents, students and
staff) can quickly be engaged in the learning process. The staff are keen to have
these evenings as early as possible such is their enthusiasm and eagerness to
establish a mutual partnership with parents. Please check the school calendar for
dates and times. I would encourage you to be as actively engaged as is possible.
www.stbenedicts.qld.edu.au
Tonight is the Parents & Friends Annual General
Meeting. It will be held in the Staffroom commencing
at 7pm. I know two classes have their Parent /Teacher
evening starting at 6pm but this should be completed
by 7pm. I invite parents to reflect on the very valuable
work which the P&F does and consider offering your talents in an official capacity
as President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer and committee members. There
are usually about 8 monthly meetings per year where we gather to present our
ideas and dreams for our community. Together we create the future for our
children to enjoy. Thank you to our current team of Dannielle, Kirstin, Jo and
Fiona for your wonderful leadership in 2014. It has been very much appreciated!
Our School Board meets on a monthly basis and we need to replace two
members. If you are interested in being part of the School Board please let the
school office know of your availability. The School Board meets on a monthly basis
on the second Tuesday. An induction process is available if you wanted to know
more about the role. The School Board assists the Principal with setting school
policy and reviewing the directions and budgets for our community. The first
School Board meeting is next Tuesday evening commencing at 7pm. Please
consider!
We have just got the year off and running and we are being inundated with
Prep enrolments for 2016. As has been the practice in the past, enrolments are
only accepted in the year prior to their commencement. Interviews for our current
families will be conducted prior to Easter and new family interviews will be
conducted after Easter.

Our first major event is scheduled for next Tuesday when our Year 3-6 classes,
along with some of our Yr 2 students, participate in an Interhouse Swimming
Carnival. It is early in the term as there are District and Zone 6 carnivals scheduled
for later in the term. The structure of the carnival is different this year with the
older students participating early in the day and our younger students
commencing mid day. The reason behind the new structure is to have the
students more actively engaged with the carnival in a shorter time frame and not
being exposed to the heat of the day for a full day. As with all activities we will
review this process to see whether we were able to achieve our goals and it was
beneficial for our students. Mrs Creese our new Physical Education teacher is also
interested in hearing from parents about the skills that you possess so that we
may be able to benefit from your knowledge whether it is swimming, athletics or
our winter sports options. She is a delightful and enthusiastic teacher who will be
striving to engage all students to the best of their very diverse abilities.
With our Physical Education teacher working every day we have found it necessary
to vary our uniform days to more closely align with scheduled PE activities. I am
sure that you can appreciate the desire to have appropriate footwear and clothing
for most of these activities. A schedule of sports wear is available and this info will
also be provided at the Parent/Teacher sessions.

Speed Alert!
On St Benedict’s school property we have a 20k speed limit (10k in some
construction zones). Dropping your children to school and picking them up after school should be a calm
and enjoyable experience for everyone. Please show patience and courtesy while observing the rules of
the road in and around our school. It is imperative you drive slowly and safely as there are children about!

Update on Student Protection at St Benedict’s Catholic Primary School
Your children and their safety and wellbeing are our priority. St Benedict’s Catholic
Primary School is committed to the protection of all our students from harm and
abuse. There have been some recent changes to legislation in relation to reporting
of student protection matters by schools.
Reporting of Concerns – At St Benedict’s any concerns or reasonable suspicions we
have about a student’s safety and wellbeing or the behaviour of a staff member or
volunteer which a student considers to be inappropriate, will continue to be
managed in accordance with Brisbane Catholic Education Student Protection
Processes. All our staff recently undertook training on their reporting
responsibilities. A link to the Brisbane Catholic Education Student Protection
Processes can be found on our school website or they can be accessed on Brisbane
Catholic Education’s public website www.bne.catholic.edu.au Under the ‘Students
and Parents’ tab select ‘Student Protection’ from the drop down menu and click on
the relevant button.
Complaints Procedure - Brisbane Catholic Education has published a Complaints
Procedure for Non-Compliance with BCE Student Protection Processes. A link to the
Complaints Procedure can be found on our school website. Parents or students
may make a complaint via the Record of Complaint about Non-compliance with
Brisbane Catholic Education Student Protection Processes which can be accessed
on Brisbane Catholic Education’s public website www.bne.catholic.edu.au Under
the ‘Students and Parents’ tab select ‘Student Protection’ from the drop down
menu and click on the relevant button.
We take all complaints very seriously and will handle them in accordance with the
Complaints Procedure for Non-Compliance with BCE Student Protection Processes.
Should you require information or assistance regarding the procedures you may
contact the school or the Brisbane Catholic Education Student Protection Team on
3033 7409.
Look out!
There are children about.
In our Drive Through,
St Benedicts operates a
highly efficient, effective

Volunteers are essential
to the program.
Please contact the School

Concerns or Further Information- Parents and students should talk to the class
teacher, Principal, APA, APRE or School Councillor if there are any concerns about
the safety and wellbeing of any student or concerns about the behaviour of a staff
member or volunteer. We take all reports seriously and will handle them in
accordance with our Student Protection Processes.
Please contact the Principal, APA, APRE or School Councillor if you have any
questions or concerns about any matter or require further information about
student protection.
We need a number of new volunteers to assist with the LOOKOUT PROGRAM each afternoon. It is not the
responsibility of school leadership to run this program but both Brett and I have committed to being present. If
you can assist for about 20 minutes straight after school please let the staff in the office know of your availability.
It is a wonderful service for families but it is reliant on the generous nature of some wonderful volunteers. Please
consider!
It has been a very hectic start to the year but I am delighted with the progress of our school community and the
weather has been pretty kind to us with no days of extreme heat.
Thought for the Week: “There is a light at the end of every tunnel; the sun returns after every storm.”
Have a great week!
Regards, Mark

Dear Parents,
Thank you for the warm welcome to St Benedict’s
school. I feel both blessed and privileged to join the
school leadership team, staff and learning
community. My initial reflections on the community
continue to resonate as the days pass. Whilst large
in number, there is a strong sense of warmth and
connectedness amongst the people in the
community – staff, students and parents.
As the year progresses you will get to know more
about me, however I will offer a little bio now. I am
married to an architect, and we are city dwellers,
who retreat regularly to our granite belt farm
(Antony says ‘just call it a block’) so we get a
balance of the city and the bush in our lives. We have a son Lachie who recently
finished school and a son Xavier who has just begun Year 2 this year.

about 21st Century learning: what it is, what it looks like, and how to keep moving
and improving toward the best education for our students. I am also motivated to
continue to rethink learning environments moving them toward 21st century
learning spaces, ask your child to tell you about the outdoor classroom design challenge. I am also an avid reader:
at present the books occupying space on the shelf are on brain theory and learning. For those of you willing to
explore the world of neuroscience, neuroplasticity and learning, I can recommend to you a start into this
learning: ‘Brain Rules’ by Dr John Medina.
Some people have enquired if I am like Mrs Burke to which I reply, ‘You will have to work that out!’ Others have
asked if I sing and dance, and I have to admit it wasn’t written into the role description! I have known, and been a
friend of Mrs Burke for many years, and I believe there will be many similarities as well as many differences
between us. One striking similarity that I am learning is our desire to move and improve student learning.
I look forward to getting to know you as the year progresses.

"1, 2, 3! Let's fly!" is the motto chant that is cried out by Benny’s Angels, the staff
netball sensations who not only finished an outstanding Top of the Ladder in the
North Lakes Indoor Netball competition, but topped the year with a grand final win!
Team members Nicole Sawatzki, Kate McPhee, Megan Ritchie, Emma Winzar
(Mrs McPhee's sister) , Emma Howard & Kyria Birch (OSHC staff), Kris Clancy
(teacher from here last year) are still revelling in their victory. Well done ladies!
Guitar Lessons
We apologise, but spaces for guitar lessons are full. If spaces become available later in the Term we will

Have a wonderful week.

Well Done!
Chloe McMillan, Madison Murphy & Millie Calder represented North Lakes
Snakes at the Oztag Junior State Cup over the weekend. These girls played in the Under 10 Girls
Division (even though two of them are only 7!). They did really well for such a young team and just
missed out on playing in the semi finals by 1 point!!!

Dear Parents,
I hope the recommencement of routines and structures is making life a little more
predictable and manageable in your families. As Mark has reported, the new
school year seems to have started very well. Mark and I are very pleased to be
working with Jo Scott-Pegum as part of our Leadership team this year. While Jo is
learning life at St Benedict’s we are already learning many things from her wisdom
and experience.
Community Cuppa
New parents to our school community who were able to attend
our school assembly this morning would have observed the
invitation to join us every Wednesday following assembly for an informal
gathering to meet and chat with other parents within the school community.
As part of our approach to the Kids Matter framework, developing relationships
with our parent community and parents developing relationships with other
parents is a clear goal of ours. Please stay behind for 5 minutes or longer
whenever you can, as you are always welcome.

Pastoral Care Parents
As a means of helping maintain communication, our Pastoral Care Parent
representatives are important role holders within our school. As I always stress,
this need not be a difficult task. It is a rewarding one whereby you help bring
interested members of the class community together for occasional social events.
The Pastoral Care Parent also helps inform parents, via a generated email list, of news relating to families within
the class. I urge any parent considering assisting your child’s class teacher in this capacity to speak to another
parent and share the role. I look forward to meeting all Pastoral Care Parent Representatives who are able to
attend at a brief meeting this term where you can meet other parents in the school doing the same role.
World Cancer Day
www.stbenedicts.qld.edu.au
As we all know almost every day on the calendar nowadays is assigned to a cause.
When I came across the fact that today is World Cancer Day I wanted to highlight
this within our community. Almost all of us know someone, a loved one or a friend
who has been affected by cancer. World Cancer Day is a unique opportunity to
raise awareness that there is much that can be done at an individual, community
and governmental level, to harness and mobilise solutions and catalyze positive
change. By moving forward together we have the potential to show: Cancer. It is
not beyond us. As a community may we pray for all sufferers of cancer and their
families both young and old.
Commissioning of Staff
Next Wednesday on assembly we will commission the staff of 2015 to be the best
educators they can be for the learners of St Benedict’s this school year. This
occasion where the staff publicly commit to their teaching profession is an
excellent opportunity to observe our wonderful staff. We are very proud of the
assembled team and look forward to a very productive and enjoyable 2015.
I look forward to seeing many of you around the school.
Kind regards, Brett

their library day due to illness or appointments. It won’t be a space to come and play
before school, it is simply a chance to return and borrow readers.
Christmas Borrowing
At the end of 2014 we had a fabulous opportunity for students to borrow up to 10
books for the Christmas holidays. We hope you enjoyed reading your books.
These books will need to be returned ASAP. As per the note that went home, any

varied range of readers. It is important for everyone that if you damage a home

Professional Development
Our teachers had the opportunity to engage in some great Professional
Development in the lead up to school beginning. We worked with many Education
Officers- Religious Education from Brisbane Catholic Education and Maurice Ryan
on “Discovering Teaching the New Testament”. Following this we had 2 days with
Kim Summers (Education Officer - English, Brisbane Catholic Education ) on
“Teaching Spelling” and “Making Meaning Through Grammar”. These days have
given staff the opportunity to reflect on their current practice and we look forward
to new and exciting ways to incorporate these new ideas into the classrooms.
1:1 Devices
There will be some very excited Year 5 students who are bringing their new
MackBook Airs home for the first time! Many thanks to Marty O’Brien (ICT
Officer), Michelle Fitzgerald, Anna Patch and Tracy Biddle (school officers), our
Year 5 Teachers – Matt and Megan Ritchie, Sam Bubb and Kate McPhee for
helping get these devices up and ready for use.
MacBooks will not be issued to students, until parents
have either attended the Year 5 Parent Night that was
held last night, or met with their child’s teacher to
sign off all the paperwork to finalise this process.
It is VERY important to report any issues with these
devices immediately to classroom teachers so that we
can get them sorted for you ASAP.

Starting a New School Year
Getting a new school year off to a good start can influence children’s attitude,
confidence, and performance socially and academically. The transition back to school
after the long summer break can be a challenge, even for children who are keen to
return to class. Everyone must readjust to the change in levels of activity, structure,
and pressures associated with school life. Parents can help their children and family
manage the increased pace of life by planning ahead, being realistic, and maintaining
a positive attitude. Here are a few suggestions to help ease the transition and promote a successful school
experience.
The First Few Weeks










Set aside some time each day to talk to and listen to your children. They will have lots to talk about including
their new teacher, class and friends.
Be prepared for the return to school: make lunches the night before and set alarm clocks.
Re-establish bedtime and mealtime routines. All children perform better and feel better at school after a good
night sleep.
Designate and clear a place for homework. Select a spot to keep backpacks and lunch boxes, as well as a
place to put important notices and information sent home for you to see.
Mark important dates on your calendar, such as Parent Information Evenings, Swimming Carnivals or handing
in forms.
Be sure your child knows what to do after school including where to go or who to call if you are not home.
Send your child’s teacher a brief note letting the teacher know that you are interested in getting regular
feedback on how and what your child is doing in school. Let them know the best way to contact you.
Familiarize yourself with school staff: the principal, assistant to the principal, front office personnel, teachers,
school officers, support teacher, guidance counsellor and the after-school care coordinator.
Avoid over scheduling extracurricular activities particularly for younger children.
Don’t be surprised if children get off to a good start and then become upset after the first few days or even
after the first couple of weeks of school. This is very normal and it is important that you stay calm and ensure
that they follow through with the usual routine of getting ready and going to school each day.
Overcoming Anxiety
 Being a little anxious is normal, do not overreact. Even if your child seems upset at first, they will be fine.
 Remain calm and positive. Model optimism and confidence for your child. Reassure them that you love them
www.stbenedicts.qld.edu.au




and will be there at the end of the school day.
Reinforce your child’s ability to cope. Give them a few strategies to manage a difficult situation on his or her
own.
Help them identify and connect with at least one friend.
Get help if serious concerns arise. Contact the school to meet with your child’s teachers and guidance
counsellor. They can offer support that will help identify and reduce the problem, as well as suggest resources
within the school and community to help you address the situation.
Remember, children are wonderfully resilient. With your support and encouragement, they will thrive
throughout their schooling.
Adapted from: “Back to School Transitions: Tips for Parents,” Ted Feinberg & Katherine C. Cowan, Helping Children at Home
and School II: Handouts for Families and Educators, NASP, 2004.
Allergy Aware!
St Benedict’s is an allergy aware school! Fortunately most allergies are not lifethreatening. For some people however, exposure to certain allergens can result in the most severe form of
allergic reaction known as anaphylaxis. HOW YOU CAN HELP: If your child has eaten peanuts before coming to
school, please be sure your child’s hands and face have been thoroughly washed. Please avoid sending
peanuts/nuts or peanut butter to school.
Term 1: February 4, 2015
Pastoral Coordinator
Helen Hickey
I’d like to share a precious conversation I
overheard last Saturday, on Election Day…
A dad with his three young children (possibly 5,4 & 2
years of age) were standing patiently waiting to vote.
One of the children enquired politely, “What are you
doing Dad?” The thoughtful and age appropriate reply came, “I’m trying to decide
who should be in charge of QLD.” The child replied, “Dad, do you want to be in
charge?” The Dad shook his head and smiled (together with us adults standing
close). A man in his mid-seventies added to the precious moment, “I’m not even
in charge at home!” We all chuckled!
What absolute confidence our children have in us as parents. In their eyes we can
tackle anything! The start of a new year can be quite overwhelming, challenged
by new pathways our children are embarking on, whether that is Prep, the next year level in Primary, transition
to High school or Tertiary education. We, as parents, stand with our children, ready to calm their fears and
anxieties, delighting in their courageous new steps and daily achievements.
The majority of us would never aspire to stepping up to lead our country. But, in the everyday moments of our
lives, we are all called to lead. God calls us to a greatness that must be lived right where we are.
This, and only this, does the Lord God ask of us… “to act justly, love tenderly and walk humbly with our God.”
No involved political policies... just policies of the heart! May these inspirational words of scripture empower us
all where ever we are in the circle of life.
Playgroup starting…
A great opportunity for our little ones to have some fun.
www.stbenedicts.qld.edu.au
We are pleased to announce that playgroup will be starting for our little ones at
our St Benedict’s OSHC facility as from Tuesday 10th February. Playgroup will
begin at 8.45am and finish at 10.15am. Sandra Price (OSHC staff member) will
coordinate this wonderful opportunity for all interested families. Sandra will set
up different activities for the children to enjoy. Great chance for the adults to
have a cuppa and meet new families in a relaxed setting. All parents will be
responsible for their own child/ren during playgroup time. We ask that a $2 coin
donation be given each week to assist with tea, coffee and craft expenses. Play
and socialising with other children is so important during the early years. It’s a
great way for our younger children to make friends that they’ll possibly meet again
in Prep at St. Benedict’s in the years ahead. All that’s left to be said… Let the good
times roll!!
If you are interested in this weekly Playgroup opportunity please email –
[email protected] or just come on Tuesday 10th February and enjoy!
Please spread the word with anyone who has pre prep age children.
Peace & blessings,
Helen

2015 Begins
This year has already begun with a great deal of joy and excitement. We have welcomed
into the College three streams of Year 7, three streams of Year 8 with an additional six
new students to Year 9 and six new students to Year 10. This has seen our enrolments
more than double which required an increase in our teaching and support staff.
The students in Years 7 and 8 form our Middle School; and students in Years 9 and 10 form our Lower Senior
Phase. For the younger students we will focus on helping them settle into secondary college life – organisation,
time management, making friends, exploring new subjects and having fun whilst learning. The older students
have been asked to be good role models to the younger students, act as buddies, and to get the best out of these
lower senior years in readiness for selecting senior pathways and various courses of study.

construction and scheduled for completion by Term 2 (weather permitting). Our students are very fortunate not

Century learning.

Welcome to Term 1 of 2015!
Over the Christmas holidays we had so much fun! We visited Seaworld, went horse
riding, went swimming at Currimundi Lake and paddling at Bribie Island, along with
much more! But the biggest thing of all that happened was that we adopted 2 tiny
guinea pigs! Our two girls are named Popcorn and Teddy and have happily settled
into our OSHC family alongside Bumble Bee the budgie! A huge thank you must be
extended to the Cramond Family (Mackenzie 6B, Meghan 3B and Ryan PW) for kindly letting us adopt our new
furry friends! Every weekend our pets are taken home by students who attend OSHC so they are certainly not left
to their own devices over the weekend period. They get very spoilt and well cared for! (insert pic!!)
This year at OSHC we have welcomed 28 new families to our community which has seen the service grown to
over 90 children per afternoon! Our OSHC Educators will certainly be busy this year!! Should your circumstances
change and you require Before or After School Care please do not hesitate to contact me for an enrolment
package via the numbers above as there are still a few spaces left to fill. Have a great year and keep smiling!!

Sport Update
Laurel Creese
If future any sporting updates will be covered in the APA section of the weekly Wednesday
newsletter. This ‘Sport Update’ an introduction to our new Physical Education teacher Laurel
Creese with an emphasis on preparation for the Yr 3-6 Swimming Carnival next Tuesday, 10
February.
Introduction
I have nearly acclimatised to the Queensland heat after moving back home in January after living and teaching in
Melbourne for 5 years. Prior to moving, I taught at St Bernardine’s at Regents Park. I really love cycling and
swimming and after a bit of a rest from tennis am going to take it up again as soon as I can. I used to play
tournaments with Pat Rafter and have played in the Australian Open Juniors. This information also tells you my
vintage!!!!
I am really looking forward to helping students develop their physical skills in my
role as the Physical Education teacher at St Benedict’s in 2015. My role also
includes the busy job of Sports Coordination at a School, District and Catholic Zone
level and I’m excited about helping students develop their sports skills through
different programs and events. Many thanks to Mrs Sherie Hogan who will be
assisting me in my endeavours.

Swimming Carnival
Our first event for this year is the Swimming Carnival for our students who are in
Years 3-6 and we also have some Year 2 students who are eligible to participate as
they are born in 2007. It is being held at the Lawnton Aquatic Centre,Cnr of
Gympie Rd and Lawnton Pocket Rds, Lawnton QLD.
To create that team feeling right from the beginning we are asking that all students travel on the bus with the
staff to and from the venue. We ask that you support us with this decision.
All students have received information and nomination forms. We hope you can come to support your child and
their team. Please see the timetables below to help you plan your day.
You’re invited to Wednesday Morning Assembly at 8.30a.m for the Presentation of the House Trophy and Age
Champion Medallions.

Sporting Interests and Talents
I would also like to provide opportunities for students to compete at District and higher levels and would like
identify students at St Benedict’s who play competitive sport or have a special talent and may be eligible to be
nominated by our School for Pine Rivers District Trials throughout 2015. These trials are usually for the older
students in the school (2003 and 2004 born) and I will be checking this information at the District Meeting
next week.
I will be sending a form home this week to gather some information regarding this. Please look out for it!

I have already met some Parents in our school community who have offered their help with Sport and it would
