salon for 2015.
Owner Trisha Lloyd said

when asked why she thought
her salon was chosen as the
“best. “Every day we do our
best to live up to our name (Che
Bella means ‘how beautiful’ in
Italian).” She continued, “We
want to make every guest in
our salon look and feel more

of 2004. The salon is located at
301 East Fifth Street in Clare
just a couple of blocks east
of downtown. They are open
Tuesday from noon to 5 p.m.;
Wednesday, Thursday and
Friday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.;
and on Saturday from 9 a.m. to
5 p.m.

Lenny The Barber has
been a fixture in the Clare
community since 1974.
No wonder he was the
voters’ choice for Best
of the Best barber in the
area.
Asked why he thinks
he is the readers’ favorite,
owner Lenny Wills said,
“I have had both a barber
and a beauty shop license
for more than 40 years. I
believe I’m the only one
in the area with both.”
He added, “I’m asked
all the time, ‘What’s
the difference between
a barber and a barber
stylist?’.”
He explained, “With a
barber and beauty shop
license the shop offers
complete hair care for
both men and women.”
He said his shop was one
of the first to layer cut hair
and use and sell Redken
and RK products.
Lenny, who still goes
to hair shows regularly
to keep up on the latest
styles and products,
specializes in shampoo,
cut and style. “I have
also sold and fitted hair
pieces for men and am
the only barber to offer
appointments.” He also
has offered tanning for
over 20 years.

AWOL
The AWOL ladies are Owner Dorothy
Davis and Manager Kari Bauer.
AWOL Lawn Maintenance & Janitorial
Service was named the best when it comes
to keeping lawns in shape and looking good.
They have been doing it for 25 years.
Owner Dorothy Davis loves to be outside
and at 68, still loves what she does. She is
always working on lawns, and not always for
pay. She believes in helping the needy like
area seniors who might no longer be able
to keep up with their yard work. She was
a teacher in Clare for 16 years and worked
at the Midland Hospital for 11 years. Her
husband has been an English Teacher at
Clare for 35 years.
Manager Kari Bauer has been with the
company 25 years. Together they work year
round – lawn maintenance during the spring,
summer and fall and the janitorial service
all year.
“Lawn maintenance is a weather
dependent business,” Dorothy said, adding
that this time of year the emphasis is on
their commercial janitorial service, which
includes cleaning the court house. The
cleaning service began in 1997. Their first
janitorial contract was with the City of
Clare.
Their specialty is to provide a service and
help the needy. Dorothy said, “We strive to
be honest and fair. We are not out here to
make a lot of money.” They have a high
work ethic. Dorothy said that is “because
Kari maintains a high standard of how a
yard looks afterwards.” They have a lot of
repeat clients.
Based at the corner of Maple and Grant
Roads in Clare, they have two landscape
trucks (now parked for the winter) and a
pickup for the business. They work seven
days a week with the busiest seasons in the
spring and fall (leaf season).
She said she appreciates all of the people

Captain David Saad
Captain Dave Saad, of the Clare Police
Department was the voter’s Best of the
Best choice for their favorite police officer.
Originally from Marine City south of
Port Huron, he graduated from police
school at 19 and came to Clare for his first
job. He has been here ever since.
He first worked at the Clare County
Sheriff’s Department under Sheriff Jeff
Goyt in 1998 and 1999 and from there
came to the Clare Police Department.
Since his start with the Clare Police in
1999, Dave has been promoted from road
officer to Sergeant than Captain. He was

Mallory McDowell
Mallory McDowell was the
voter’s choice as the Best Musician
in the area in the Review’s Best of
the Best Contest.
Mallory has been singing virtually
her entire life. Her first public
performance was at age three when
she sang at a Gateway Lanes karaoke
program. Since then, Mallory has
sung at many events in Clare County
and throughout mid-Michigan.
Mallory’s biggest performance
was when she sang our National
Anthem at the Palace of Auburn
Hills for the MHSAA State
Wrestling Finals last March. She
has sung our National Anthem
several times at Great Lakes Loons
semi-professional baseball games
too. Since age nine, Mallory has
also been a regular performer at the
annual Classic Country Reunion in
Freeland.
Mallory is 16 years old and a
junior at Clare High School. She
said “I am grateful for the good
fortune I’ve had singing locally and
at larger events, and I look forward
to other singing opportunities in the
future.”

Brown Corners United Brethren, located
on Old U.S. 27 five miles north of Clare, was
voted Best of the Best for 2015 by area voters.
Pastor Jeremiah Ketchum said that is
because of the wonderful congregation. “We
have some awesome people here. It’s our
people that make the church so wonderful.” He
continued, “When my wife and I attended here
before I was the pastor that is what attracted
us to this church. It was a neat answer to our
prayers. The people were wonderful and we
felt very welcome here.”
Pastor Jeremiah and his wife Elisa attended
Brown Corners while he was the chaplain at
Eagle Village for 2 ½ years in Hersey. Before
that he was the pastor at Colonville Bible
Church for two years. He is originally from
Lake Odessa, west of Lansing. The couple
have four sons ages 12, 10, 7, and 2.
He has been pastor at Brown Corners nearly
a year.
Brown Corners was established in 1886 on
the corner of Brown’s Road and is now located
at 5540 South Clare Avenue. Sunday Services
are held at 8:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. with Sunday
School at 10 a.m. There is also a Children’s
and Teen’s Youth Program on Sunday evenings
from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Office hours are 9 a.m. to 3
p.m. Monday through Friday.
“Our hope is to reach our community with
the gospel of Jesus Christ,” Pastor Ketchum
said.

Best of the Best voters have named K’s
Diner, located about two miles west of
Farwell, the best family restaurant in the
area and the one that has the best Friday
night fish fry in the area as well.
K’s Diner is well known for their great
breakfasts and home style dinners. They
were voted “best fish fry in the area”
in 2013 and they have many unique
sandwiches. The diner is located just
two miles west of Farwell at 2015 West
Ludington Drive.
Owner Karen Hubble said, “I believe
we were picked because we continue to
do our best at keeping things the same.
Our fish is liked by many people and they
would hate to see us change anything.”
Karen said the diner also features a
“big breakfast with ‘taters,’ eggs, meat,
toast and pancakes. Our specialty is our
customers’ satisfaction.”
Karen opened K’s Diner (formerly
George’s) in 2009. They also have the
Mad Café, located right in Farwell.
K’s winter hours are Sunday from 7
a.m. to 3 p.m.; Monday through Thursday
and Saturday from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m.; and
on Friday from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. You can
