FEBRUARY 2015 MISSION STATEMENT “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” - John 3:16 We, the men, women and children of Faith, united in the knowledge that faith in Jesus Christ as Savior from sin is the only way to enter heaven, exist as a congregation to proclaim the message of salvation to the world by reaching out to those who do not know Christ and by nurturing those who do, encouraging them to lead lives of Christian service, all to the glory of God. Someone counted them once and came up with over 80 times recorded for us in the gospels. “I tell you the truth.” During our Lenten season this year we are going to focus on some of those times, on some of the things Jesus said that he wanted to emphasize by starting out with the words, “I tell you the truth.” Interesting that it’s just one word in the original language of the Bible. Whenever Jesus started out saying something with the phrase, “I tell you the truth,” it’s really the word Amen. We use that word often in our worship services. Especially after our prayers, but other times too. After our pastors forgive our sins in God’s name, we say “Amen.” After the final blessing, we sing it three times. When we do, we mean, “it is true.” We mean that we believe it, that we are certain that God has heard our prayers, that he has forgiven our sins, that the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit have all placed their blessing on us before we leave church. Can you see why we say Amen after hearing things, while Jesus said Amen before saying things? The answer has to do with the truth. Jesus is the giver of truth. We are the receivers of truth. When Jesus said something and started out with the word Amen (often he started out with two Amens — the second one gets lost in our English translation), he is trying especially hard to get us to pay attention and believe what he says. When we listen to something and say Amen, we are saying that we did pay attention and do believe what was said. With Jesus’ Amen he called for faith in the words to come. With our Amen we respond with faith in the words just heard. Our eternal future really all depends on that little word Amen. If Jesus didn’t tell the truth, then all is lost. And without faith in the truth, people are lost as well. We know that Jesus did tell the truth. That’s why this Lenten season promises to be one where we can grow, yes grow in the truth, for Jesus is the truth. Amen to that! THE ONE THING NEEDED Samuel was one of the spiritual giants of the Old Testament, whose life story is told in the first of two books that bear his name. God speaking to him, literally. As a result, he had many years, even a whole lifetime of fostering an intimate walk with God. His entire life was dedicated to serving God. Even his birth was a result of the prayers of his mother, Hannah, who had never been able to have children. But the encouraging thing about Samuel is that he was no different from us. He had no unusual intelligence or ability to hear from God. He simply developed his relationship with God at a young age and nurtured it through the study of the Word. Blessed by the Spirit, Samuel became one of the great saints of the Bible. As a result, Samuel knew beyond a shadow of a doubt—from a young age—that God had a purpose for his life. In accordance with his mother’s prayers, he even went to live full-time in the temple as a youth, learning at the feet of godly leaders and discovering how to hear Too many parents today look for greatness for their children in the wrong places. They think greatness St. John’s— John’s—Antigua Board of Education Tid Bits St. John’s mission collection this semester will be used to support another St. John’s . . . in Antigua. Our world mission there has helped establish a congregation of 600 souls that works to support a school of over 200 students. We also have a special connection to St. John’s, Antiqua with one of our congregation’s daughters serving there—Emily Marggraf. It is a great privilege to be able to give back and support such work. Please pray for all of our synod’s world mission efforts to “go and make disciples of all nations.” ⇒ Our Board of Education is evalu- ating the long-term staffing needs of our school. Needs identified include Science, Technology, and administration. ⇒ Persistent in our mission, the board has also been looking at ways to focus on the spiritual health of our school and our partnership with families. This has led us to discuss the possibility of having a school pastor and what impact it would have on our school and congregations. is hidden in the right colleges, athletic clubs, or social settings. They commit priority and resources just for the opportunity to mine these empty caverns. If success is found, it is only fool’s gold offered by the world, keeping them from their real eternal treasure. Greatness for our kids comes only through Jesus. It will always be that way. It can’t be earned through a degree, won in a competition, or found in the right philosophy of man. It is a free gift. Through insane love shown on the cross, Jesus makes our sinful kids sons and daughters of God—heirs of His eternal wealth.
