She revealed the expected decision at a crowded press meet here, on a day when her letter to Congress president Sonia Gandhi, in which she expressed her ‘agony’ in detail, was published in the media. Echoing the contents of the letter, she said, ‘This is an extremely painful moment and heart wrenching time for me. My family has been associated with Congress for a long time. I am fourth generation Congress worker.’ Stating that she came from a family that had Congress blood flowing in the veins, she said, ‘it is extremely anguishing that I have to rethink my association with Congress. ‘The Congress is no longer the Congress that I joined. I had a 30,year old association with the party.’ Joy for Paes, not so much for Sania Melbourne, Jan 30 (PTI): Leander Paes kept himself in line for his 15th Grand Slam title by reaching the Australian Open mixed doubles final with Martina Hingis as they defeated Su-Wei Hsieh and Pablo Cuevas in straight sets, here today. Expectations of seeing another Indian in the final of the same event, went up in smoke as the top-seeded duo of Sania Mirza and Bruno Soares crashed out after winPORT ning the set to third-seeded Kristina Mladenovic and Daniel Nestor 6-2, 3-6, 8-10. S Perth, Jan 30 (PTI): India’s uninspiring batting show continued as they threw away a decent start to be all out for a meagre 200 against England in a virtual semifinal clash of the cricket tri-series, here today. Ajinkya Rahane (73) was the topscorer of the innings but no other batsman crossed the 40-run mark as England’s pace battery initiated a batting collapse after India were placed comfortably at 83 for one. Steve Finn (3 for 36) took three wickets while Chris Woakes (2 for 47), Stuart Broad (2 for 56) and spinner Moeen Ali (2 for 35) claimed two scalps each after inviting India to bat. Out-of-form Shikhar Dhawan (38) and Rahane got off to a slow start but they batted to a plan, rotating the strike to good effect and slowly the runs started coming, albeit in a tickle as the first 10 overs yielded only 34 runs. Thereafter Rahane looked in good touch, as the openers brought up their 50-run stand in the 14th over. Even Dhawan play some good shots after spending time at the crease, cutting and driving with much more ease. comply with the wishes of the Congress president.’ Specific requests In her letter, Jayanthi stated that ‘specific requests’ were issued in projects like Vedanta’s Rs 30,000 crore investment, Adani projects, GVK power project regarding the Dhari Devi temple in Himachal Pradesh, the Lavasa project in Maharashtra, the Nirma cement plant in Gujarat. Accusations Jayanthi said she received ‘specific requests’ from Rahul on environmental clearances. Further, she stated that Rahul’s decisions were dumped on her and she has proof to back her claims. She has stated that she was asked to resign (as she was needed by the party) but the party work was never given to her. She noted that Rahul’s office planted negative stories about her. Centre reacts Even as Jayanthi Natarajan made a series of serious allegations against the Congress, Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley today said the Environment Ministry should look into clearances granted during UPA regime. S NT Bureau Chennai, Jan 30: Former Union Environment Minister Jayanthi Natarajan, who announced quitting the Congress today, has penned an emotional letter to Congress president Sonia Gandhi, taking potshots at party vice-president Rahul Gandhi. She blamed Rahul for her removal as Environment Minister in 2013, when she rejected big ticket projects as they were against norms. Behind the closed door She wrote,’When I entered he (Manmohan Singh) stood up from his chair, looking tense and grim, and uttered these exact words. He said ‘Jayanthi, I have been told by the Congress president, that your services are required for party work.’ I was puzzled, and I said, ‘Yes sir. So what should I do?’ He replied, ‘She wants you to resign.’ I was shocked and said, ‘Resign Sir? But when?’ He replied ‘Today.’ I once again asked him if this was what the Congress president wished. He answered in the affirmative. Unsuspecting, and trusting you totally, I did not utter a single word, but smiled at him and said I would And after... ormer Union Environment Minister Jayanthi Natarajan today quit the Congress after making a series of charges against Rahul Gandhi and said ‘it was an extremely painful day. I am a fourth generation congress worker. I come from a family which has congress blood.’ Terming Jayanthi Natarajan’s charge of specific requests on green clearances as a ‘serious issue’, Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar today said he would review the files where allegations of extraneous influence have been mentioned. ‘The revelations made by Jayanthi Natarajan in her letter to Sonia Gandhi, which have become public today, are a matter of great concern and is a serious issue,’ he said in Delhi. He said as Environment Minister, it is his duty to review those specific files where extraneous influence has been alleged as per the letter. Jayanthi Natarajan had written a letter to Congress president Sonia Gandhi alleging that she had received specific requests from Rahul Gandhi on environmental clearances and consequently had rejected big ticket projects. Meanwhile in the world of sports, there were mixed fortunes for India. While veteran tennis star Leander Paes made yet another grand slam final, reaching the mixed doubles summit clash at the Australian Open along with Martina Hingis, the cricket team folded for 200 in their must-win cricket tri-series match against England at Perth. Jayanthi Natarajan at a press meet in Chennai today She however said: I have been spokesperson for 10 years. I am extremely grateful to my party for giving me all the opportunities. It is with extreme gratitude that I say that I have served without a single blemish. Recalling her tenure as Environment Minister, Jayanthi said she ensured that every single step she took was according to the law. ‘I did my duty with due diligence. I ‘A day after I was asked to resign (by the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Sonia), Rahul told a FICCI meet that environmental bottlenecks would be cleared soon. But I only did what his office asked me to (in stalling projects)’ had projects investigated. Many of my colleagues in cabinet protested strongly. Very often I had to face anger and wrath because economic progress has been stopped. But I have to tell them that environment cannot be compromised.’ She added: ‘I followed the party line. Madam (Sonia) Gandhi wrote to me several times on forest right. Rahul Gandhi was interested in tribal rights. All these made me stop the Vedanta project. She said she served the country and was good Environment Minister following party line despite objection from cabinet colleagues. Stating that she had no issues with the State party, Jayanthi said, ‘I was sidelined in national level. ‘Rahul Gandhi ruined my reputation. A day after I was asked to resign (by the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Sonia), he told a FICCI meet that environmental bottlenecks would be cleared soon. But I only did what his office asked me to (in stalling projects),’ she said. Jayanthi also said she was forced by the Congress leadership to launch an attack on (the then) Prime Minister (candidate) Narendra Modi in the ‘snoopgate’ issue. She said she has resigned from the primary membership of the party and from the Congress trust at the State level. She also said she had no plans to join any other party. But fill them with artwork, everyone would pay some attention. For art on the wall breathes out life, this can leave a lasting impression on our minds’. Artistes from Delhi, Mumbai, Germany, Spain and USA apart from Chennai were given the choice of picking spots in the city and escalator wall was one of them and they were free to churn out art work as per their desire. It was not easy for artists to work for Nijanthan some eight or 10 hours amid the buzz of activity. ‘Ever since painting work began, we had lot of encouraging response from public, some of them even had a word of praise too. Railway authorities too deserve a pat, they were very encouraging.’ he said. This art work is not restricted to Egmore Railway Station alone. Blend 4 FRIDAY 30 JANUARY 2015 WHAT WH AT NEW N NEWS EWS EW S TO TODA TODAY DAY DA Y PR PRIN PRINTS INTS IN TS IS IS NE NEWS WS TTHA THAT HATT CO HA COUN COUNTS UNTS UN TS Right move The decision not to challenge the Bombay High Court ruling in the Vodafone case is both bold and correct. Bold, because partisan critics could still accuse the government of a sell-out to foreign companies; correct, because it would reassure foreign investors keen to do business here that there is transparency and predictability in our tax regime. Under the UPA, erratic and whimsical taxation decisions marred the investment climate. No one did more damage in this regard than Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, who resorted to retrospective amendments to undo the verdict of higher courts. This caused a fright in the corporate boardrooms across the globe, consequently slowing down the flow of funds into the country. In the latest decision, the Cabinet on Wednesday decided not to challenge the Bombay High Court order of 10 October, ruling in favour of Vodafone India Services Pvt. Ltd. The company had issued shares to its parent in 2009-10 and 2010-11 at a premium of Rs 8,509 per share, receiving a consideration of Rs 246.30 crore from the parent company. The relevant tax authorities, however, accused Vodafone India of under-pricing the shares. Tacking on an additional Rs. 1,397 crore to the company’s income, it raised a tax demand of Rs. 3,200 crore in the transfer pricing case. Vodafone challenged the demand in the high court. The court order setting aside the additional tax demand last October and its endorsement by the Cabinet on Wednesday ought to help clear up the confusion on the prevailing tax regime. The uncertainty, nay, the opacity of the UPA years, can now become a thing of the past. As Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said after the Cabinet meeting, a transparent and fair tax regime would prevail, which is not vulnerable to retrospective and quirky decisions. In fact, the Cabinet decision went further, deciding to accept orders of courts, Income Tax Appellate Tribunal and Dispute Resolution Panel in case of other taxpayers where similar transfer policy adjustments have been made and the courts, ITAT or DRP have decided in favour of the taxpayer. Investors, both Indian and foreign, could not have asked for more transparency. The firmness with which the Cabinet undertook to privilege clarity and predictably in such tax matters is commendable. Vitally, Modi’s Make-in-India push for its success would require a stable, fair and predictable tax regime, something which had become scarce in the previous regime and which the NDA Government is keen to restore, in order to put the country back on the high growth trajectory. Frivolous litigation caused by quirky decisions of the UPA too would be unnecessary, once clear-cut taxation policies are in place. Disputes over transfer pricing had involved a number of foreign firms. All those stand to get relief from the Cabinet’s bold decision. The woman has not been named in the 36-page lawsuit filed in the California federal court against the San Francisco- based firm and has been identified only as ‘Jane Doe’. She is seeking an unspecified amount of damages that should be determined at a jury trial and compensation for the ‘physical and monetary’ harm and for harm to her ‘professional and personal reputations’ the assault caused her. She is also seeking a permanent injunction directing that Uber take all affirmative steps necessary to remedy the effects of the unlawful conduct alleged in the lawsuit and to ‘prevent repeated occurrences in the future.’ Following the filing of the lawsuit, the victim’s lawyer, prominent New York Attorney Douglas Wigdor said Uber’s focus on its ‘bottom line over the safety of its passengers has resulted in what can only be described as modern day electronic hitchhiking.’ Bluetooth handset that takes & record calls Bluewire is a Bluetooth headset with a really intelligent party trick. It can record the audio from each side of a phone name and can even seize the sound from a Skype or FaceTime chat too. As such, it’s the one Bluetooth headset available on the market with such capabilities. Nevertheless, with over half of the funding goal already pledged inside its first 24 hours on the location, there’s an excellent probability that will probably be making an enormous distinction to journalists’ legal professionals’ and argumentative couples’ lives very quickly. The headset data audio to its inner 16GB SD card - which can be transferred to a pc by way of USB or copied routinely to a smartphone by way of the supporting app - and can even be used as a dictaphone for capturing voice memos of as much as 5 minutes in size on the fly. KISSING GOODBYE The case seeks to ‘slam the brakes’ on Uber’s reckless worldwide expansion at the ‘unfortunate expense of basic customer safety’ ‘...We intend to hold Uber responsible for the significant physical and emotional harm it has caused to our client, while simultaneously seeking a court order mandating that Uber initiate certain safety precautions that they appear unwilling to do voluntarily,’ he said. Wigdor hoped that the lawsuit would bring about positive change that will ultimately protect people worldwide who are unaware of the ‘serious risks of entering into an Uber car.’ Jeanne Christensen, a partner at the Wigdor law firm, said Uber executives’ decisions to cut costs at the expense of customer safety forced the young woman to ‘pay the ultimate cost.’ ‘Her brutal rape by an Uber driver who was a known repeat sexual predator was a result of a global Uber policy that has far-reaching consequences. We intend to hold Uber accountable for violence that could easily have been avoided had even a minimal background check been conducted,’ Christensen said. Wigdor added that the lawsuit seeks to ‘slam the brakes’ on Uber’s reckless worldwide expansion at the ‘unfortunate expense of basic customer safety.’ It demanded that Uber must implement necessary safety measures including opening dedicated 24/7 customer support centres in every city that it operates in, requiring all its drivers to install GPS tracking systems and tamper-proof video cameras and providing female drivers. It said Uber’s ‘negligence, fraud Kerry fined for failing to remove snow outside WASHINGTON: US Secretary of State John Kerry has been fined a penalty of $50 by the Boston City officials for not removing snow dumped on the side street in front of his house which was formed due to the massive snowstorm this week. The city officials yesterday slapped Kerry with a $50 fine for C failing to clear the snow-clogged sidewalk on the Pinckney Street side of his Beacon Hill mansion, The Boston Globe reported. Kerry’s spokesperson Glen Johnson said the Secretary of State would promptly pay the fine. ‘Diplomats -- they’re just like us. Secretary Kerry was working overseas while the blizzard packed a wallop back home,’ Johnson was quoted as saying. The Secretary of State was not at the Boston home when the massive snowstorm hit the city. He was in Saudi Arabia along with President Barack Obama to express condolences over the death of the King and meeting the new King. ‘It was a very public rebuke of one of the city’s most famous dwellers,’ the daily reported. and other unlawful actions’ caused the woman’s sexual assault, which has ‘humiliated, degraded, violated and robbed’ her of her dignity. Uber must also perform thorough character checks on prospective drivers that go beyond mere criminal background checks to ensure that the victim’s ‘harrowing ordeal is never repeated’. The lawsuit alleges that Uber’s claims of customer safety being its top priority have proven to be ‘false and hollow’ as investigations into its safety measures reveal that the company routinely fails to have systems in place to adequately monitor and trace Uber trips. Uber does not adequately screen its drivers, regularly employing drivers with known criminal histories, ‘risking the safety of its customers,’ it added. Seeking declaratory and injunctive relief, Wigdor said in the lawsuit that Uber should be held accountable ‘so that no person will ever have to undergo the traumatic and harrowing, life-changing ordeal’ that his client had to endure. The lawsuit added that had Uber done a basic background check on its driver Shiv Kumar Yadav, it would have found that Yadav had provided fraudulent documents and had a ‘known propensity’ for ‘violent and deviant conduct, including numerous arrests for rape and assault.’ Winston Churchill still looms large over Britain LONDON: Fifty years after Winston Churchill`s death, the wartime prime minister remains a touchstone of British political life -- and a reminder of a faded age of global influence. HEALTH Today VOICE MAIL Rich tribute Sir, One feels sad to know that the legendary cartoonist R K Laxman is no more. He embodied the hopes, aspirations and troubles of Indians for over half a century. He always cared for the plight of common man through his immortal cartoons. Though the common man character in the cartoons was always silent, the intended message was very loud and clear. R K Laxman will always be remembered for his early morning dose of laughter. His cartoons would bring a smile even on the faces of people who didn’t know to read or were in a hurry. If a picture is worth a thousand words, a cartoon is worth a thousand pictures. The nation will definitely miss him. May his soul rest in peace. Raul Castro to US: Return Gitmo, end embargo C uban President Raul Castro demanded on Wednesday that the United States return the US base at Guantanamo Bay, lift the half-century trade embargo on Cuba and compensate his country for damages before the two nations re-establish normal relations. Castro told a summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States that Cuba and the US are working toward full diplomatic relations but ‘if these problems aren’t resolved, this diplomatic rapprochement wouldn’t make any sense.’ No way, the White House said Thursday. The president’s spokesman affirmed that Obama ‘does believe that the prison at Guantanamo Bay should be closed down. ‘But the naval base is not something we’re interested in closing,’ he clarified. Castro and US President Barack Obama announced on 17 December that they would move toward renewing full diplomatic relations by reopening embassies in each other’s countries. The two governments held negotiations in Havana last week to discuss both the reopening of the embassies and the broader agenda of re-establishing normal relations. Cuba has said it welcomes the measures but has no intention of changing its system. Without establishing specific conditions, Castro’s government has increasingly linked the negotiations with the U.S. to a set of longstanding demands that include an end to U.S. support for Cuban dissidents and Cuba’s removal from the U.S. list of state sponsors of terrorism. On Wednesday, Castro emphasized an even broader list of Cuban demands, saying that while diplomatic ties may be re-established, normal relations with the U.S. depend on a series of concessions that appear highly unlikely in the near future. The US established the military base in 1903, and the current Cuban government has been demanding the land’s return since the 1959 revolution that brought it to power. Cuba also wants the US to pay hundreds of millions of dollars in damages for losses caused by the embargo. Now she’s on the verge of a 19th major championship after beating 19-year-old Madison Keys 7-6 (5), 6-2 on Thursday and setting up an Australian Open final against long-time rival Maria Sharapova. Berdych rues another missed chance Melbourne, Jan 30: Tomas Berdych blamed ‘one bad set’ for his defeat by Andy Murray at the Australian Open on Thursday when his dreams of a maiden grand slam title were again crushed at the semi-final stage. The Czech seventh seed played some brilliant tennis to edge Murray in a marathon first set but was on the back foot thereafter to lose 6-7 (6), 6-0, 6-3, 7-5 on a chilly night at Rod Laver Arena. ‘I’m really not happy and not really in a good mood,’ a downcast Berdych told reporters. ‘I’m very disappointed to lose this match. It was a big match. I just need to come back stronger. ‘What was the difference? I had one bad set for the second set and that’s it. I was just trying to get my ‘Starc will be key to Oz success in WC’ Melbourne, Jan 30 (PTI): Australia’s bowling coach Craig McDermott says in-form pacer Mitchell Starc must be consistent throughout the 44day long Cricket World Cup to give co-hosts the best chance of winning the coveted title. Starc, with 12 wickets, is the leading wicket-taker in the ongoing tri-series including India and England, performing the role of pace spearhead well in the absence of Mitchell Johnson. ‘We do have two spearheads from that point of view,’ McDermott told the Herald Sun. ‘Mitchell Starc is swinging the new ball. It is certainly going to swing for him in Perth. He is a real weapon if he gets it right and the ball is swinging early. ‘There is no point having two good games and two mediocre games. Giving an update on Mitchell Starc Johnson’s fitness ahead of the final in Perth on Sunday, McDermott said the left-arm pacer has been working up good pace in the nets. ‘He has had a lot of cricket over the last little while and he is always bearing the brunt of a lot of overs. His rhythm looked good. ‘He bowled all his different variations and everything came out beautifully. Mitchell is always We are going into a World Cup. Ex-players back Aamir’s return Karachi, Jan 30 (PTI): Banned pace bowler Muhammad Aamir has found some support in his comeback to cricket announced by the International Cricket Council (ICC) yesterday. At a time when a strong lobby, which includes former Pakistan captain Rameez Raja, is not in favour of allowing Aamir back into cricket, the 22-year old youngster has found much needed support in some quarters. Pakistan legend Wasim Akram said that he was happy to hear about Aamir being allowed to play domestic cricket. ‘He made a mistake at a very young age and I think he has learnt from it. It would not be fair to now stop him from making a come- back,’ Wasim said on a Pakistani channel. ‘I think he deserves another chance as he was very young when he got involved in this spot fixing scandal. ‘Even our religion allows and promotes forgiveness and I appeal to the Pakistani nation to forgive Aamir for his mistakes and support him now,’ the former pacer said. Another former captain Rashid Latif said that playing domestic cricket was the right of Aamir once he was given permission by the ICC. ‘The ICC anti-corruption unit has given him this relaxation so it is only fair he plays domestic cricket,’ he said. Cricket Maria Sharapova Tomas Berdych chances, trying to fight for it, but it was not enough.’ The big-serving Czech thrashed third seed Rafa Nadal in straight sets in the previous round, ending a 17-match losing streak to the Spaniard. Much has been made of coach Dani Vallverdu’s part in Berdych’s run in Melbourne, having joined the Czech after leaving Murray’s camp. Berdych credited Vallverdu for helping him devise a master plan for Nadal but the respected Venezuelan was unable to make the difference against the sixth seed. The glaring streetfighter that punched hard in the opening set was replaced by a lumbering giant in subsequent sets as Berdych was thrown by the Scot’s superior court speed. Murray appeared fired up after an exchange between the first and second sets but his opponent said he was misunderstood. ‘I say to myself, ‘Well done, Tomas.’ Berdych said. ‘I think I’m allowed to do that when I win a set. That was it. ‘There is no really big deal about anything that was happening today on the court. Sydney, Jan 30: Asia’s football chief has admitted there is groundswell of opinion in the west of the continent that Australia’s membership of the confederation has not worked out and they should be kicked out. Australia will play South Korea for the Asian Cup on Saturday after what is widely regarded as a successful hosting of the tournament, the second time they have reached the final in three attempts since they switched from Oceania in 2006. Asian Football Confederation (AFC) president Salman Bin Ibrahim AlKhalifa said in an interview with Dubai newspaper Al-Ittihad that there was a desire by Gulf Arab federations to review Australia’s membership. ‘Yes, it is true, there are indications that confirm that there is a desire among West Asian federations to remove Australia from the AFC,’ he told the paper on Wednesday. ‘But I also know that the Arabs are not the only ones that are not convinced with the value of Australia staying within the Asian football family.’ Critics of Australia’s move to Asia, which they undertook to seeking more competitive football and an easier route to the World Cup finals, say the benefits have been all one way. The Socceroos have reached the last two World Cup finals through Asian qualifying, while the Arabian Gulf, which had one team in soccer’s showpiece event from 1990 to 2006, was not represented in South Africa or Brazil. Qatar host the World Cup in 2022 and if they cannot qualify for Russia in 2018 would become the first host nation since the earliest days of the tournament never to have competed in a finals before welcoming it to their own shores. Asia has four qualifying spots for the World Cup with a fifth country getting a shot at the finals through an intercontinental playoff. Bahraini Al-Khalifa, who took over the AFC in 2013, said no mechanism had been put in place to review Australia’s membership when it was agreed in 2005. ‘The decision to include Australia was taken many years ago, before I became head of the AFC and at the time,’ he added. ‘The decision by the general assembly did not stipulate that this was an experiment that would be evaluated to see whether Australia would continue with the AFC. McLaren unveils car for 2015 season London, Jan 30 (AFP): McLaren unveiled their new car, the MP4-30, which will be piloted by former world champions Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button in 2015, in an online presentation on Thursday. The British marque will be running Honda engines for the first time since 1992 and they hope that Alonso and Button will help them end two years in the Formula One wilderness. But despite resuming their partnership with Japanese engine manufacturer Honda, the new car retains the predominantly grey livery synonymous with the team’s 20-year partnership with Mercedes. ‘Although our renewed alliance began again many months ago, the launch of the McLaren-Honda MP4-30 marks the start of a lengthy journey,’ said chief executive Ron Dennis in a statement. ‘We’ve come a long way already and, although there’s a lot of work to do before we can expect to repeat the level of success we enjoyed together 25 or so years ago, it’s already clear that there’s enormous synergy and potential in our partnership. No. TN / PMG / (CCR) / WPP-470 / 15-17 Jyothika ready for the act Two to tango Suryah upbeat about Isai S J Suryah is all thrilled for his Isai is hitting the screens today. The movie is directed and enacted by him. He has also scored music for the movie. Sathyaraj and newcomer Savithri play prominent roles in the movie. Says Suryah, ‘Rahman asked me once why I didn’t try composing. He said I had a good sense of music. I told him not to joke and even asked him to tell me straight if he didn’t have the dates to spare.’ On the delay in completion, Suryah, says, ‘I’ve finished it fast actually! I knew this movie would be heavy and would take three-and-a-half years to complete. I didn’t realise that to play a music director, I would have to become a music director from scratch’. — NT Bureau (Touring Talkies) A ctor-filmmaker-producer S A Chandrasekhar seems to have followed the footsteps of legendary director K Balachander. His directorial venture Touring Talkies has two stories in one film seemingly inspired by KB’s Oru Veedu Iru Vaasal.. Touring Talkies has two stories and SAC plays the hero in one of them. In the post-interval story, Sunulakshmi is the heroine. Ilayaraja has scored the music. The movie(s) has different storyline and is set in different milieu. The first story narrates the love story of 75-year-old Antony (S A Cha- drasekhar), who comes to Shimla in search of his love Hema Malini (Papri Ghosh) whom he missed in life. His journey is told in a very light manner and the best thing is that SAC has played his age. The second story is set in a remote village where a powerful family of upper caste men (Aadukalam Jayabalan, Robo Shankar and Sevvalai), let loose a reign of terror. He has portrayed a revolutionary theme with child molestation as the core issue in a hard hitting manner. New face Sunulakshmi shines and Robo Dhanush impresses Kajal Ma Ka Pa Anand to romance Aishwarya K ajal Aggarwal, who is working with Dhanush for the first time in Maari, says he is a very talented actor. Heaping praises on the National Award winning artiste, she says, ‘He is certainly one of the best actors I have worked with till date.’ Maari is directed by Balaji Mohan of Kadhalil Sodhapuvadhu Yeppadi and Vaayai Moodi Pesavum fame. It is produced by Sarathkumar. — NT Bureau Ma Ka Pa Anand and Aishwarya Rajesh will share the screen space in a film titled Deepavali Thupakki, which is said to be a comical one. According to sources, the radio jockey turned actor, who became popular with Vanavarayan Vallavarayan, has bagged an interesting role in Deepavali Thupakki. Aishwarya has been given an equally interesting role. Shooting for the film will take place in and around Chennai, add sources. — NT Bureau Shankar as the baddie is good. SAC has done his act well. The first story seemingly an inspiration films like Titanic and Cheran’s Pokkisham, has some entertaining moments. But the second story is more serious and carries a strong theme. Among the highlights of the film are its technical brilliance, music by Ilayaraja and editing by Sreekar Prasad. Touring Talkies has some moments that keeps the audience interested. — M BHARAT KUMAR S hooting of How Old Are You, the Tamil remake of the Malayalam blockbuster is complete. Postproduction is on and the team is planning to release the film sometime in March or April. The remake is directed by Rosshan Andrews, who helmed the original as well. Jyothika, who is making a comeback with this film, will be reprising the role of Manju Warrier in the Tamil adaptation. Also, Rahman, Sanjay Bharathi and Virumaandi Abirami are a part of the supporting cast. Produced by Suriyas’s 2D Entertainment, this untitled film has Santhosh Narayanan as the music director. — NT Bureau Fox Star to distribute Rajathandiram F ox Star Studios has bagged the distribution rights of upcoming Tamil heist-thriller Rajathandiram, which is a citybased con caper, and is slated for release in March. We are proud to be associated with Fox Star Studios for our debut production Rajathandiram. Thanks to our association with the legendary studio, this film will have an extended reach, (giving us) more viewers from a lot of places, and giving us greater exposure, the film’s producer Senthil Veeraasamy said in a statement. The film garnered lot of attention when the makers released six character teasers followed by the final trailer. Directed by A.G. Amid, the film features Veera, Regina Cassan- dra, Ajai Prasath and Darbuka Siva. While G.V. Prakash Kumar has composed the tunes, Sandeep Chowta has taken care of the background score for the movie. Filmmaker Gautham Vasudev Menon is also associated with the film as its creative producer. — NT Bureau Published by K.
