Welcome to the 2015
Vermont Farm Show!
This year we are focusing on our event as the “One Stop Shopping” trade show! We have
everything from seed to feed, health care to taxes, banking to education and much, much more!
The place to be from the 27th through the 29th, the Show will again host many association
meetings, including the Dairy Banquet and the Sugar Makers Meeting as well as the all day
FFA competition on Wednesday.
It’s free parking and free admittance again this year, although we are partnering once more
with the Vermont FoodBank. Please bring a canned or nonperishable item to donate, and
there will also be a donation jar for cash on the volunteer table in the entryway.
There will be equipment outside and inside and we are chock full of exhibitors.
The Farm Show will really miss the LW Greenwood display in the middle of the Miller
Building, but we are hoping to see Ron and Lillian sometime during the event.
I’d also like to take this opportunity to thank Teresa Doyle and Chris Reed, workers
extraordinaire for many years and the behind the scenes folks who make the Farm Show
so much easier for me!
Consumer Night will be taking place on Wednesday from 4-7 in the Pavilion Building, and
one change is that the Farm Show itself will close at 6:00 p.m. so our vendors can enjoy
the activities. Anybody attending Consumer Night—hosted by the Vermont Agency of
Agriculture—will be asked to come in prior to 6:00 p.m. and will be exiting out the door
of the Pavilion Building when the evening concludes.
Come and visit—old friends and new, neighbors and exhibitors, animals and associates.
We will have something for everyone—it’s one stop shopping at Champlain Valley Exposition
during the 2015 Vermont Farm Show!

Consumer Night
When: 4-7 p.m. Wednesday, January 28
Where: Buy Local Market: Enter the Main entrance and head to the Blue Ribbon Pavilion.
Come celebrate the diversity of Vermont’s agricultural products January 28th, 2015 at the 4th annual
Consumer Night at the Vermont Farm Show. On the
second night of the farm show, attendees will have the
opportunity to attend the Buy Local Market where they
can learn about, sample and purchase a broad range
of products made within the state. Attendees will also
have the opportunity to watch state Representatives,
Senators and employees of the Agency of Agriculture,
Food and Markets compete in the annual Capital
Cook-off—an Iron-chef style cooking challenge. Farm
Show patrons can enter the main entrance and head
towards the Blue Ribbon Pavilion at the Champlain
Valley Expo Center starting at 4:00 pm.
The Buy Local Market gives 56 Vermont producers
the opportunity to engage with new customers through
sampling and conversation. As well it provides customers
a unique time to learn about new products and purchase
goods from around the state. At the market, one can find
ice creams, cheeses, wines, beers, meats, fruits, vegetables,
maple syrups, honeys, and more. A number of vendors
also specialize in handmade crafts, like textiles, candles
and jewelry—all the best products under one roof.
At 5:15 pm the Capital Cook-off will begin with the
unveiling of the evening’s local ingredients. The cooking
challenge continues until 6:30 pm at which point the
contestants must submit their dishes for review by a
panel of judges—which could include you! The Agency
is excited to announce a vendor scavenger hunt open to
all Consumer Night attendees. Those who complete the
scavenger hunt will be entered to win the final seat on
the esteemed judging panel that includes area restaurant
owners, chefs and public officials.
Event highlights and winners will be announced live
on WCAX during the evening news, but don’t miss the
opportunity to sample and learn about Vermont’s products in person—perhaps even pick up a recipe or two from
the Capital Cook-off winners!
Everyone knows the parking and admission to the
Vermont Farm Show is always FREE! But we’d like to
give something back, and what better way than food!
Please bring a non-perishable item to the Farm Show as a
donation. Vermont Farm Show personnel will collect all
donations for shipment to the Vermont Foodbank.

The New Hampshire-Vermont
Christmas Tree Association
The New Hampshire-Vermont Christmas Tree Association (NHVTCTA) was founded in 1956,
and since that time has continually provided its membership with educational, marketing, and
technical support. With approximately 200 members, NHVTCTA counts among its membership
the majority of those engaged in the production and sale of trees, wreaths, brush and ancillary products in the two state area. We host three meetings a year, held in January, June and September. The
January meeting is held each year in conjunction with the Vermont Farm Show, while the June and
September meetings are held at member farms.
For further information visit our website at www.nh-vtchristmastree.org or call 802-447-0660.
Vermont FFA
Vermont FFA has been very busy this past year. We
have hosted two National officers who had the opportunity to meet and get to know our members. We are
working on building a great partnership with Shelburne Farms as the host of our annual state convention. Over 200 members and guests attended our state
convention last year. They were given an opportunity to
work the land with staff from Shelburne Farms, attend
workshops, career and education fairs as well as a bonfire with s’mores completed their time. The state officer
team although small in numbers has done extensive
travel—from Canaan to White River Junction, Vermont
to Camp Oswegatchie, NY, DC and to Louisville, Kentucky for National Convention. Speaking of National
Convention we added to our roles of American Degree
winners and a Honorary American Degree. Other recipient; which means an individual that has given of
themselves on the local, state and national level.
Vermont FFA is on the move and looking forward to
new friends, members and leaders of tomorrow.
The FFA day at the Farm Show will highlight only
some of the learning that the students participate in
over the course of their time in agricultural education.
First, many will compete in Winter Forestry where they
are asked to identify trees, bushes, grade syrup, and
many other indoor aspects of Forestry. The second
contest is our Milk Products—here members are looking to identify a variety of cheeses, milk issues, understand somatic cell counts, etc. Only the Milk contest
winners continue onto National competitions.
Come visit us during the show at our FFA Foundation table and find out how you can continue to be a
part of a young persons FFA career in “Giving Back the
Blue.” See you at the show!
The Vermont Beef Producers’ Association
The Vermont Beef Producers’ Association (VBPA) will be having their Annual Meeting
on Wednesday, January 28 at the Vermont Farm Show in Essex Junction. The meeting, to
be held in the Blue Ribbon Pavilion of the Champlain Valley Expo Center, will commence
at 1 p.m. Arion Thibourney of Vermont Packing House will speak about “Marketing Beef
for Small-Scale Producers.” This program will address the marketing options for producers
of less than 100 beef a year. Direct marketing in halves, quarters and bundles is a profitable
and efficient method and Arion will discuss how to sell, educate customers and grow your
business. This will be a perfect opportunity to enjoy the popular Farm Show on Consumer
Day and meet old friends and gain new ones. The VBPA welcomes all beef producers and
those curious about the industry whether a member or not. The programs alone will be
worth the visit. Lunch is available in the Expo Center. For further information contact Bill
Emmons at 802-457-1520.

Dairy Farmers’
Appreciation Banquet
Hosted by Vermont Dairy Industry Association
(VDIA) in cooperation with the Vermont Farm Show
and Vermont Agency of Agriculture, 2015 Dairy Farmers’
Appreciation Banquet will be held on noon, Thursday,
January 29 at the Champlain Valley Exposition during
the Vermont Farm Show. This annual mid-day celebration recognizes Vermont’s Highest-Quality-Milk award
winners, Finley Award recipient and Vermont Dairy Farm
of the Year. Governor Peter Shumlin and Secretary Chuck
Ross will be the special guests.
Presented annually by VDIA, the 2014 John C. Finley
Award recognizes that person whose character, whose dedication to Vermont agriculture and education, and whose
accomplishments most closely resemble those goals, ideals
and achievements that were so important to John Finley.
Presented each year by UVM Extension and VDIA, the
Vermont Dairy Farmer of the Year Award is part of the
New England Green Pastures Program. All aspects of farm
management are evaluated in selecting the winner.
Also sponsored by VDIA, the Highest-Quality-Milk
award is given to the cow and goat dairy farmers who
have been documented to produce Vermont’s best quality milk. Runners-up are also recognized.
Tickets to the banquet are $10 in advance or at
the door (cash/check). Seating is limited. Contact Alan
Curler at 802-828-0325 or [email protected] to reserve
tickets in advance.
The Vermont Dairy Industry Association also sponsors the FFA Dairy Foods Career Development Event
that is held during the Farm Show. For more information about the Vermont Dairy Industry Association,

The Vermont Sheep and Goat Association
The Vermont Sheep and Goat Association is a
non-profit agricultural membership organization and
has been in existence for more than 100 years. We are
incorporated in the State of Vermont, have a Board of
Directors and a written set of by-laws. In addition to
soliciting our membership on an annual basis for dues
to sustain our administrative services and publications,
we write for grants to support our programs.
As a volunteer organization, we could do nothing
without the good will, ideas and support of our membership.

Annually we elect a Board of directors, four of whom
are officers. Our purpose is to support, improve and
strengthen the diverse community of sheep and goat
breeders in Vermont and to work to insure a viable
infrastructure to produce healthy animals and get our
products to market. We produce lamb, chevon, cheese,
breeding stock and wool. Although geared primarily
towards the needs of sheep and goat producers, we
also welcome members with animals that produce
fine fibers, including angora goats, alpaca, llamas and
angora rabbits.
Our membership is made up of sheep and goat
producers with many different breeds, farm sizes and
farming philosophies. Our aim is to promote humane
treatment of animals, a high-level of animal health,
and sustainable farmland stewardship on all farms.
Through the educational, technical assistance and marketing opportunities that we with others provide, we
strive to help our members gain satisfaction as shepherds as well attain profitability in their businesses.
We work collaboratively with a number of sister organizations and institutions. The University of Vermont
Extension Services, Vermont Technical College, Vermont Grass Farmers Association and the Vermont
Agency of Agriculture are among the organizations that
provide education and technical assistance.
Marketing assistance and market opportunities come
from a variety of sources, including the Vermont Lamb
Promotion Board, Vermont Cheese Council, Northeast
Center for Food Entrepreneurship, and the Vermont
Fresh Network. Cooperatives such as Vermont Quality
Meats and Pride of Vermont offer members profitable
markets for lamb. Vermont’s sheep and goat milk cheeses are among the best in the world.
We also share expertise and experience among our
members through workshops and on-farm mentoring,
as well as invite experts in production and marketing to educational events and workshops throughout
the year. Conferences include successful entrepreneurs,
renowned small ruminant dairy experts, cheese makers
and spinners from around the world. VSGA’s Sheep
and Wool Festival in October is celebrated as one of
Vermont’s premier agricultural events.
We have many opportunities for members to provide
useful services, including tours of their farms, service
on the board of directors and committees, assistance
with the Sheep and Wool Festival, mentoring of new
sheep and goat producers, articles in our newsletter,
information for our website, membership development,
and educational workshops.

History of
the Vermont
Farm Show
The Vermont Farm Show was formed by the old Vermont Dairymen’s Association and Maple Sugar Makers’
Association meeting.
In 1930, the Memorial Auditorium in Burlington
was only a few years old, and the Dairymen’s and Maple
Sugar Makers’ winter meetings were held there.
Orlando Martin of Plainfield had served as secretary
of the Dairymen’s Association for several years. He
published a small program booklet containing a few
advertisements and sold exhibit space to a half dozen
or more dairy and farm equipment people along the
outside walls of the basement of the auditorium. The
income was used to cover program speaker expenses,
printing the booklet, and sharing in program expense
for the sister organization known as Wives and Daughters of Vermont Dairymen, who met with them in the
three- or four-day event.
In late 1930, Martin asked Harold Dwinell, director
of the Department of Agriculture, Division of Markets, if he would put on an educational exhibit in the
basement of the auditorium. Then Commissioner of
Agriculture Edward H. Jones considered it an excellent
opportunity to publicize the department and the newly
created Division of Markets.
During that time sugar makers were just beginning
to use glass for packing syrup, potato growers were
just beginning to experiment with packing potatoes in
15-pound bags for sale in stores, and poultry farmers
were starting to use cartons for packing eggs for sale
in stores. So Dwinell made a display of syrup in glass
bottles, potatoes in burlap peck bags, a dozen eggs in
both 3x4 and 2x6 fancily colored and marked cartons,
and McIntosh apples in colored peck-size baskets. The
display was placed on a table against a section of wall
with Division of Market identification.
Dwinell soon started discussing the idea of a products competition with Commissioner Jones and other
prominent Vermont agriculturists. The resulting consensus was “Let’s go.”
The Vermont Farm Products Contest was launched
in 1932, three years prior to the first Vermont Farm
Show. About 50 entries were displayed just outside
the ropes of the fighting ring in the center of the

Burlington Memorial Auditorium basement. Extension
Service, Experiment Station and Department of Agriculture personnel served as judges.
The general attendance at the meetings of the dairyman and sugar makers was the largest ever. Potato
growers asked, “Why can’t we have a program?” Poultry growers asked if in another year they could have
a program also. And the apple growers, although the
Horticulture Society usually held a meeting later in the
spring, said they would like to have a program. Discussions led to the belief that there should be a new overall
organization to operate the whole affair in which all
of the Vermont farm enterprise organizations could
participate.
UVM Agricultural College Dean Joseph Carrigan and
Commissioner Jones had discussed the possibility of
drawing the various agricultural enterprise organizations in Vermont into a council through which a large
mid-winter show could be held, and Ed Jones was the
guiding spirit in bringing it about.
Carrigan, Jones and Dwinell can rightfully be called
the founders of the Vermont Farm Show. Their efforts
led to the formation of the Vermont Union Agricultural
Council. Its chief objective was to foster the Farm Products Show and conduct a commercial and educational
exhibit of farm and home equipment and supplies.

The Council established itself in the first Union
Agricultural Program held in Burlington in January
1935. The Council membership included the Vermont
Dairymen’s Association, Vermont Maple Sugar Makers’ Association, Vermont Poultry and Egg Producers’
Association, Vermont Certified Seed Potato Growers’
Association and the Vermont Horticultural Society.
The active executive delegates were the president and
secretary of each organization, the Commissioner of
Agriculture and the Director of the Extension Service.
The Director of the Bureau of Markets was made general manager. The 1935 meetings were an outstanding
success in every respect, with every member organization participating both in the program and with an
educational exhibit. Every available space for exhibits
was used by commercial concerns.
In 1938, The Vermont Agricultural Extension Service
noted in its annual report that the Vermont Farm Products Show was having a pronounced effect throughout
the state in stimulating the production of quality hay.
During 1937, hay instruction had been added to the
agricultural curriculums statewide. Approximately 65
hay samples were judged at the show. In conjunction
with the show, the 5th Annual Rural Electrification
Institute was held in Burlington under the supervision
of the extension engineer, with the theme “Electric

Agri-Mark is a dairy cooperative owned by farm families
throughout New York and New England. By collectively
marketing their farm-fresh milk under the Agri-Mark
name, these 1,200 farmers have received year-end profit
checks for the last eight years in a row, despite wildly
fluctuating national and international dairy markets.
Agri-Mark farmers own the award-winning Cabot brand
of Vermont Cheddar, Greek-Style Yogurt, butter, and other
dairy products in addition to the McCadam brand of
Cheddar and other New York cheeses. Ownership of these
value-added brands has contributed heavily to the financial
success of Agri-Mark members and their cooperative.
Agri-Mark has also invested in operations to manufacture
and market valuable whey proteins globally, while
continuing to market fresh fluid milk from local farm
families to the region’s largest dairy processors.

Power as a Farm Business Proposition.”
The Union Agricultural Meetings and Farm Products Show
continued to grow and prosper in
Burlington through 1946. They
were held every year except 1943
and 1944, when wartime restrictions prevented the event from
being held.
By 1947, the Vermont Department of Agriculture reported
11,206 dairy farms in the state, but
The Memorial Auditorium in Burlington had been leased to the Veterans Administration. So the Union
Agricultural Meetings and Farm
Products Contest were moved to
the Barre Municipal Auditorium,
where they were held until 2012.
In November 1957, Vermont
Farm Show Inc. was officially
organized and incorporated. The
official bylaws of the organization
were revised and adopted at a meeting held May 15, 1979. For many
years, Barre’s location in central
Vermont, with easy access to the
newly created interstate highway
system, brought visitors from the
south and north to the midwinter
show. For several years after moving to Barre, the four-day show and
meetings were held in February,
but since the early ’80s the show
has been scheduled for the last
Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday
of January.
Due to interior space limitations
and parking constrictions at the
Barre site, the show moved to the
Champlain Valley Exposition in
Essex Junction, Vermont, for the
2012 show. The new, more spacious venue provided a better experience for guests and exhibitors alike,
according to Farm Show management. More than 150 exhibitors participated in the 2014 show.
We look forward to creating
more history at the 2015 Vermont
Farm Show.
