These Area Groups have a representative on the National Dressage Committee (Area Delegate). The National Committee and area groups work together to schedule qualifiers for National Events, recruit and train judges and technical officials, and encourage new members to the sport. By joining your local group, you can also have an input into the future of your sport at area and national level. Area Group newsletters often include schedules for local events. Contact and join your local dressage group – find out what opportunities are provided in your area. Every area group relies on local membership to provide quality competition and training opportunities - please join up now All–In–Flex Judges & Volunteers Accolades for Involvement Awards Saskia Ostermeier and Betty Brown from All-in-Flex have both been in the sport for many years and recognise the huge contribution made by Judges and Volunteers so vital to the existence of our sport. At many events there are nearly as many judges and volunteers as there are competitors when it’s all added up Dressage currently has an annual Volunteer of the Year Award and Area awards for all nominees. Judges are nominated by area groups for the annual Judge of the Year Award The All-In-Flex aim is for an increase in area group awareness and recognition of the contribution that these two groups make to the sport and their goal to have EVERY area group nominate both a Judge and a Volunteer So All-In-Flex have committed to provide product prizes and a special memento for ALL 20 nominees in both Judge and Volunteer categories for 2015 National Winners will each receive twelve months supply, and Area Winners three months supply of All-In-Flex Hominis. Dressage and All-In-Flex look forward to being able to recognise this group of special supporters of dressage. Nomination Forms will be available on the website, and nominations will be called for in February 2015. 5 DRESSAGE NZ 2014 - 2015 BOARD & COMMITTEES Chairman Karen Trotter PO Box 209 Paraparaumu Ph 04 ESNZ Community Membership is free and will be compulsory to compete in non-graded competitions from 1 Jan 2015 Full competitive rider ESNZ membership fee, and ESNZ horse/pony registration fee, allocates you and your horse each a unique registration number. These are only some extracts from the rules and it is important to check the appropriate complete rule if a query or conflict arises and understand the full wording of the rule in the correct context. The Article (ART) refers to the rule and the book to look in. (DR = Dressage, ESNZ = General Regs) These are not all the rules for Dressage Events and therefore riders cannot use these limited extracts to claim lack of knowledge if they are found to be non compliant. Extracts from ESNZ General Regulations & Dressage Rule Book. DEFINITIONS Event : Refers to the complete meeting Competition: Refers to the individual classes at the event Grade: Refers to the grade of horse according to the number of points earned in competitions. (Ref page 16) Level: The level of competition = degree of difficulty of the tests (Ref page 16) Category: Refers to a group of competitors and or horses/ponies for whom an event or competition is organised 15 DRESSAGE COMPETITIONS Dressage has 20 Area Groups located throughout New Zealand. These Area Groups organise local, regional and national competitions throughout the year. Dressage competition is also provided by ESNZ affiliated and member organisations. The North and South Island Championships, the Prydes Easifeed FEI World Dressage Challenge, the Bates National Championships and the Farmlands Horse of the Year Show are all key events. Competitions are based on a national system of horse grading & rider category. The levels become progressively more difficult thus testing the progress of horse and rider. Rider categories are based on rider experience Dressage Tests follow a set pattern of movements that the horse and rider must complete in an arena, usually 60 x 20m. Letters are placed at precise points around the arena which define where the movements must be performed. Each test is judged by one or more judges who score every movement. Score sheets are then given a percentage score and placings are determined by highest percentage. Reference Art DR 460.1 Horse / Pony Grades. A horse/pony moves from one grade to the next once a predetermined number of points are accumulated. Inexperienced riders may, under certain conditions as per Rule ART 464, downgrade more experienced horses to use as schoolmasters. Refer to Rule Book for FULL details and more guidelines page 18 of this Year Book . Grading Points are allocated based on the % gained in each test. These points are recorded on the Equestrian Sports NZ horse database 57 - 59.99% = 1pt; 63 - 66.99% = 5 pts; HORSE/PONY GRADE 60 - 62.99% = 3pts; >67% = 7pts TESTS GRADING POINTS Level 1 Level 1 Less than 30 points in Level 2 or above Level 2 Level 2 Less than 30 points in Level 3 or above Level 3 Level 3 Less than 30 points in Level 4 or above Level 4 Level 4 Less than 30 points in Level 5 or above Level 5 Level 5 Less than 30 points in Advanced Grade Advanced Grade Levels 6 – 9 inclusive Prix St Georges, L6 Tests Level 6 Intermediate I, L7 Tests Level 7 Levels 6 & 7 are referred to as “Small Tour” the first international level Intermediate A,B, L8 Tests Level 8 Levels 8 is referred to as “Intermediate Tour” Grand Prix & GPS Level 9 Levels 9 is referred to as “Big Tour” Advanced Grade Horses may compete in any levels they are eligible for within Advanced Grade at any event. A horse’s grade for the purposes of this restriction be determined as follows (this includes all Freestyle points) Level 6 - Not more than 60 points in Level 7 or above Level 7 - Not more than 60 points in Level 8 or above Level 8 - Not more than 60 points in Level 9 These restrictions will not apply if a horse is competed by another rider of Category C7 or below 16 DRESSAGE RIDER CATEGORIES DRESSAGE RIDER CATEGORIES EXPLAINED Reference Art DR 463.7 A national standard of DRESSAGE rider categories has been implemented. Rider categories have nothing to do with the level or grading points of a horse, but just the points gained in a particular level by the rider ON ANY HORSE AT ANY TIME . Why did Dressage NZ do this? It gives the sport a chance to offer classes defined by rider experience. For example Organisers can offer a Level 1 Test 1.1 ( old name preliminary) class restricted to CN and C1 riders, and then another class, Level 1 Test 1.1 for riders C2 and above , so that an experienced rider doesn’t compete on a lower graded horse against an inexperienced rider on a lower graded horse. This does not mean that experienced riders can never bring out their young horses at Level 1. It does mean that more experienced riders will not be able to enter classes offered to a lower category of riders Dressage Rider Categories Category N (CN) Newcomers. For riders who have never earned grading points at any Level Category 1 (C1) For riders who have never earned grading points at any level above Level 1 Category 2 (C2) For riders who have never earned grading points at any level above Level 2 and riders who have ridden at ESNZ Novice Horse Trials Category 3 (C3) For riders who have never earned grading points at any level above Level 3 and riders who have ridden at ESNZ Intermediate Horse Trials Category 4 (C4) For riders who have never earned grading points at any level above Level 4 Category 5 (C5) For riders who have never earned grading points at any level above Level 5 and riders who have ridden at ESNZ Advanced Horse Trials Category 6 (C6) For riders who have never earned grading points at any level above Level 6 Category 7 (C7) For riders who have never earned grading points at any level above Level 7 Category 8 (C8) For riders who have never earned grading points at any level above Level 8 Category 9 Category M (C9) For riders who have earned grading points at Level 9 (CM) Masters. For Riders 55yrs & over (age from the beginning of the calendar year that the rider turns 55) 17 BEFORE YOUR EVENT GUIDELINES Horse /Pony Minimum Age to Compete Ref DR Art 462.3 The official date of birth for all horses & ponies is 1 st August (Sth Hemisphere) & 1st January Nth Hemisphere. Adults on Ponies Ref DR Art 463.6 Riders over the maximum age to be eligible to ride in pony competitions may ride ponies in open competition, but not in competitions restricted to ponies and pony riders. Rider Categories Ref DR Art 463 & Year Book P17 Competitions / Series may be restricted to specific categories of riders See Year Book from page 38 for SERIES If you want to check the number of points a rider horse / pony has go to www.nzequestrian.co.nz / what’s new rider profile or horse profile Horse /Pony Eligibility Ref DR Art 460 & Year Book P16 When entering an event make sure the horse has not won more than 30 grading points in the level above that of the competition you are entering – see Year Book page 16 for definition of levels. If you want to check the number of points a horse / pony has go to www.nzequestrian.co.nz / what’s new /horse profile. Where points have to be entered manually by ESNZ, recent events may not yet show up Downgrading of Horses & Ponies Ref DR Art 464 Horses or Ponies may be downgraded, following an application to the Dressage NZ on the prescribed form together with any due fee. It may be downgraded to the highest level at which the applicant rider has competed, but not below Level 2. Once registered as downgraded the horse/pony will not be allowed to compete at all in Island, National Championship event, or other event /series/class specified by DNZ, for twelve months regardless of points gained or level ridden. This applies regardless of ownership or any rider. Only the approved rider may compete the horse at the downgraded level. If the horse/pony is competed by any other rider, the horse/pony automatically reverts to having its original points and the downgraded status is revoked . Before a new rider can compete on the horse/pony at any level lower than its original grade, the process of downgrading must recommence. 18 AT YOUR EVENT GUIDELINES Horse and Pony Identification Numbers DR Art 478.14 These MUST be worn at all times whilst exercising and competing at Events run under ESNZ rules for Dressage. Numbers must be worn either attached to the bridle on the side of the face below the ear, or, attached to the lower rear corner of the saddle cloth. Stallions – ESNZ GR’s A stallion must wear a tag with a red “S” on white background on each side of the bridle or head collar at all times when on the grounds. A stallion needs to have both the rider and a handler wearing approved red and armbands or sash can be removed just prior to the horse going around the arena prior to the test. Refer also to ESNZ Web Site & General Regs for complete Stallion Handling Rules & Guidelines Use of Arena – Ref DR Art 473 Do not use an arena to work in unless specifically advised by the OC . Prohibited Schooling - Ref DR Art 474 Do not allow your horse to be ridden (other than walked on a long rein) by any other rider. A horse can be ridden in a different discipline (exception para–equestrian dressage) by another rider at the same event eg A & P Show but this must not be used as an opportunity for prohibited schooling Whips : Ref DR Art 479.1 A whip may be carried in any test except “the FEI tests” at the NZ Dressage Championships and the HOY Show. When a whip is permitted to be used, the use of one whip with a total maximum length of 120cm (including flapper) for horses, and 100cm (including flapper) for ponies may be used. Ref DR Art 479.3 Do not allow anyone to use a whip from the ground to train the horse whether a rider is mounted or not. Lunging the horse must be without the rider and a lunge whip can be used. Ref ESNZ GR 174.7 Any over-use or mis-use of whip or spur may result in involvement from a steward or official and may be penalised up to and including elimination, and or an official warning which is recorded at national office (a yellow card). Lunging - Ref DR Art 478.11 When lunging, single direct side reins, or double sliding side reins (triangle) are permitted Lungeing is allowed with one lunge line only. Note it is not allowed to ride a horse or pony in single direct side reins or double sliding ( triangle reins) 19 Warm Up Arena Etiquette Sometimes, surviving the warm up arena can be more difficult than getting through your test! l Busy periods require “arena etiquette” to ensure everyone has a safe, stress-free warm up. Here are some guidelines to keep in mind next time you find yourself in the warm up arena. LOOK UP ! Many riders are so focused on their own horse – watching their neck and head – they forget to look around. Awareness of other horses and riders around you is crucial if you want to avoid accidents (or the odd word of abuse!). Does your horse need brake lights? Don’t stop suddenly without being aware of who is behind you. If you need to stop to adjust equipment or dismount, move to the centre of the warm up arena or exit the warm up arena. If you do accidentally happen to cut someone off or force them to halt, quick “sorry!” is polite. LUNGING Try to stay as far as possible from other horses if you’re lunging. Keep to the outskirts of the warm up area, or the designated lunging area if one exists. COACHING/LESSONS If a coach is warming you up, make sure they are standing on the edge of the area, not in the middle. Make sure your coach is discrete! Shouting across the arena may provide others with a free lesson, but they may not appreciate it at the time! KEEP YOUR VOICE DOWN! Remember that the sounds you may make (clicking, growling or whatever!) may help your horse, but may not help another rider whose horse may not react the same way. LEFT SHOULDER TO LEFT SHOULDER When you and another rider are approaching head on, stay on the “right side of the road”, with your left shoulder toward the approaching rider’s left shoulder. If you’re walking or doing slow work, keep to the inside track/centre of the arena. KEEPING A DISTANCE In a busy warm up arena, it’s difficult to do, but try to avoid riding too close to another horse. Particularly when passing from behind; the horse you are passing may feel threatened and decide to kick or panic and run off. Many horses get upset when another horse crowds its space. Just use your common sense – don’t ride up another horse’s rear end don’t pass too close – we’re not playing dodgem cars! MISBEHAVING HORSES If your horse is having “behavioural problems”, please move to the edge of the arena so as not to upset other horses. Likewise, if you see another horse misbehaving, stay away and if you have to ride near it, do so quietly. If a rider falls off or there is a loose horse, you should halt until the situation is under control. A horse may be requested to leave the warm up area by a steward if it is considered it’s behaviour is disruptive to other combinations. RIDE IN YOUR DESIGNATED WARM UP AREA IF THERE IS ONE Check if the show has designated any particular area for your level and or for lunging 20 BE CONSIDERATE OF OTHERS AT ALL TIMES Everyone has equal right in the warm up area. FEI and junior riders alike. Always give way if a collision is likely – even if you’re in the “right”. Everyone has special “needs” so please bear the following in mind Juniors and beginners – less experienced, may not have much control over there mount, may be intimidated by other riders. Be aware they may unknowingly get in the way, please show some tolerance. Young/green horses – inexperienced, easily upset by other horses. Ride quietly around them and keep your distance. FEI riders - lower level riders must be aware of an upper level rider who is practicing a movement – they are expected to have more precision and their movements are more complicated. Let them complete the movement by giving them a little extra space. Lateral work always has right of way. NO GALLOPING ! Above all, use your common sense and make it a safe environment for everyone to enjoy. SADDLERY – BITS - BRIDLES Ref DR Art 478.9 Saddlery that is not permitted to be used on the grounds at any time are Bit guards, any kind of gadgets (such as bearing, side, running or balancing reins etc), any form of blinkers including hoods & shadow blinds. Male riders may if they wish, remove their hat in the traditional manner PENALTY POINTS & ELIMINATION EXPLANATION ART 451 – Errors of Course and Test If the rider turns the wrong way, forgets where they are going etc it is a “course error” and marked accordingly. If they make an “error of the test” – rise instead of sit, do not hold the reins and whip in one hand at the salute etc then it is marked exactly the same – a “course error”. The course error box at the bottom of the sheet will be ticked in the same way as for an actual deviation of the course. In fairness to riders it is suggested the bell should be rung for any course error to give them the chance not to repeat the fault should they be likely to do so, for example at the initial halt and salute. If the rider rises when they should be sitting at the trot, the bell SHOULD be rung, a course error given, and the rider should then perform the movement again for a mark as in a normal deviation of course error. However, ART 451 says a Judge may decide when a rider makes an “error of test”, for example transition/pirouette eg at V instead of K, not to ring the bell, BUT the rider will still incur a “course error”. In that example the rider will get the course error, but the original movement can be fairly marked as the transition/pirouette etc can be marked as if it was in the correct place. If the bell has not been rung but a course error penalty has been given and the rider makes the same mistake when the same movement is repeated on the opposite rein, then they cannot be given another “course error”. Of course in this situation if the bell has been rung the first time, then the rider WILL incur another course error. 28 INCORRECT SADDLERY Bit guards, martingale, bearing side or running reins, boots, bandages, blinkers – USED IN TEST Bits Not permitted type Bridle Not permitted type Incorrect colour, decorated Bridle indiscreet padding Bridle Padded cheek pieces Commercial logo on No sponsorship agreement saddle cloth Used at Level 4 or below in Double Bridle warm up or in test Used in competition.
