of Dance On By (Sadler’s Wells), a sister to High Chaparral (Sadler’s
Wells), that was purchased by DGR Thoroughbred Services for
NZ$600,000.
A Group One winner as a two-year-old, Il Quello Veloce went on
to win the Manawatu Challenge Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) before being
runner-up in the 2008 New Zealand 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m).
Ellis could not conceal his delight at securing another sale topper,
his third in the last five years.
“I’ve bought at this sale since about 1988 and I can’t remember
a filly with more class than this filly,” Ellis told ANZ Bloodstock News.
“She’s a beautiful filly. She’s by a sire that is really internationally
sought-after and she is out of a Group One-winning two-year-old.”
Ellis was familiar with Il Quello Veloce’s class, having beaten the
John Sargent-trained filly by the barest of margins with the Te Akau

to get involved in this family. I think it’s a great family.”
As is the case with all Ellis’ purchases, the filly is being syndicated.
“There are ten shares and already five of them have been sold,” he
said.
Sir Owen Glenn had his Group One winner Criterion (Sebring)
on his mind when he struck it lucky with his first throw of the dice
at Karaka yesterday, securing the eventual third top-priced yearling.
With prominent bloodstock agent Paul Moroney acting on
Ellis has been the leading buyer at Karaka for the past nine years,
purchasing 35 horses for NZ$6,420,000 at the Premier Sale last year,
and he has once again successfully defended the title.
“We’ve bought 24 yearlings ranging from NZ$30,000 up to
NZ$800,000 and they’ll all head back to Te Akau Stud for a month in
the paddock then the breaking-in process will begin,” said Ellis.
Ellis was also the underbidder on the second top priced lot, the
Fastnet Rock colt out of Dance On By, but at the conclusion of the

bidding it was Australian agent Duncan Ramage, acting on behalf
of Bart and James Cummings, who got the deciding NZ$600,000

It was left to James Cummings to face the media scrum after the

draft.
“He is a beautiful colt from a family that has produced 27 per
cent stakes winners to runners and, with his outstanding extended
pedigree, he is an exciting stallion proposition if he can be successful
on the track,” he said.
“We’ve trained an Australian Guineas winner in Rock Classic from
the sire and if this colt could win a race like that then the sky’s the limit
for his future.
“He looks the complete package as he’s very athletic, with a lovely
walk and a great nature on what we have seen to date.”
Brendan Lindsay had initially hoped for a bigger price for the colt,
but was more than satisfied with the outcome.
“I’m pleased,” he told ANZ Bloodstock News. “All the good judges
were on him and he fetched what they thought he was worth. It was
a nice price and it’s good to see him going to the Cummings stable.

chase.
“Owen wanted to get some fillies together to support Criterion
when he goes to stud and he came out yesterday and looked at the
short list of six that I’d put together and this filly was also his pick of
them.
“She was clearly the top of the list and we really wanted her. Our
strategy was to have a decent go at securing her and if we missed out
then we would have a closer look at the others but the reality was this
one was our goal.
“She is tremendously athletic and has a quality pedigree behind
her and I felt she was the best filly in the sale, which I guess was
apparent as there was plenty of interest during the bidding.
“We probably blew our budget to get her but that’s what you have
to do sometimes.”
The filly is out of a half-sister to the dam of the champion filly
Atlantic Jewel (Fastnet Rock) and Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m)
winner Commanding Jewel (Commands).
Moroney’s association with Sir Owen goes back to the late 90s,
when the bloodstock agent sold him part of his share in Second

A
nother slice of history will be made when Inglewood Stud
is represented by the first crop of young sire Zacinto
(Dansili) at the National Yearling Sales at Karaka, Writes
Wally O’Hearn.
It was 75 years ago that the stud’s founder, Ken Austin, put the initial
draft of Inglewood Stud’s yearlings by his first stallion through the New
Zealand’s National Yearling Sales and now Gus Wigley, Austin’s great
grandson, is taking the same step with a draft of eight yearlings by
Zacinto in the Select Sale, which begins this morning.
Austin was a key figure in the history of New Zealand thoroughbred
breeding. He was co-founder of the New Zealand Thoroughbred
Breeders’ Association, bred and raced several successful horses,

he will continue to shuttle to New Zealand
even if his future results in the northern
hemisphere make him more valuable there.
Well supported in his early seasons
at Haunui, Showcasing last season was
attractively priced at NZ$7,500 plus GST,
good value for a horse with his pedigree and
race performance.
At two in Britain in 2009, Showcasing
won two of his four starts including the
historic Gimcrack Stakes (Gr 2, 6f) at York, a
race also won by the legendary Star Kingdom
(Stardust). He was also placed at his two
other appearances, notably when third in the
Middle Park Stakes (Gr 1, 6f) but as a threeyear-old he failed to add significantly to his
record, his best effort being when second in
the Duke Of York Stakes (Gr 2, 6f) again at
York.
Showcasing is one of 91 stakes winners
– among them 12 Group One winners – to
represent his highly successful sire Oasis
Dream (Green Desert) out of the Listed
winner Arabesque (Zafonic), a half-sister

Another of her daughters, Midnight

It is interesting to briefly look back on the
stud career of Hardline’s maternal grandsire
Housebuster (Mt Livermore), champion
sprinter in the United States in both 1990
and 1991.
From the Blushing Groom (Red God)
male line, Housebuster was only moderately
successful as a sire in the United States and
in New Zealand where, like Showcasing, he
stood at Haunui Farm.

to Hardline’s pedigree a female strain of Sir

It is also worthy of note that Showcasing
is linebred 4m x 4f to the diminutive but
highly influential sire Lyphard (Northern

ABLE FRIEND HEADLINES
BIG AUSTRALIA DAY
WEEKEND
The Australia Day weekend could hardly
have been commemorated in better style
with horses bred Down Under scoring
feature race victories in four countries on
three continents.
And in the process, the NSW Ramsey
Pastoral-bred, Hong Kong-trained Able
Friend staked a serious claim to the title of
the world’s best racehorse.
At the end of a week in which the world
racehorse rankings listed the Australian
sprinters Lankan Rupee and Terravista as
the best short-course Thoroughbreds in the
world and placed Able Friend (Shamardal)
among the best three on earth, the Aussie
product stepped up, claiming Group 1
victories in South Africa and Hong Kong,
Group 2 and 3 wins in New Zealand and 10
of the 11 stakes races on offer at home.
