All three are on their way to the regional swim and dive meet on February 6 & 7. “Gladys Baggett humanitarian Employee of the Month” ORHS- 9th grade Campus … Mr. Mason Peters Mr. Mason Peters, an outstanding Algebra I teacher and Freshmen Football and Soccer Coach, epitomizes Gladys Baggett’s strength to help and encourage our Oak Ridge War Eagles to succeed. His favorite part of the day includes … any time he finds free cookies in the Teacher’s Lounge and; on a more serious note, any time that he can succeed in an opportunity to help a student or a staff member. Coach Peters, a graduate of Conroe High School (GO Gold and White Tigers!), is inspired greatly by the following quote: “Consider the turtle, he only gets ahead when he sticks his neck out.” This saying can “put us in mind” of Mr. Mason Peters previous job as Director at Camp Ozark. This job required Mr. Peters to hold certifications such as a CDL, a High Ropes Course Facilitator and a Federal Pyrotechnics License (Professional Fireworks). Camp Ozark also wanted Coach Peters to be lifeguard certified but when he attempted to acquire the title, he showed the world that he “swims like a brick!” Lucky us, we got him at ORHS. ORHS- Senior Campus … Ms. Shannon MacDonald In her third year at Oak Ridge High School, Ms. Shannon MacDonald enjoys crying at the yearly graduation ceremonies as she watches her War Eagles “take flight into the world” and follow his/her path onward and upward. Ms. MacDonald teaches all four grade levels of Social Studies and works with the Special Education Department on both of the ORHS Campuses. Ms. MacDonald is a graduate of New Braunfels High School (GO Blue and White Unicorns!), but did attend Conroe High for her first two years of secondary education. Some interesting facts about Ms. Macdonald are … she graduated as a member of the Corps of Cadets at TAMU (Army Company’s W-1 and G-1 after integration.), she has lived and taught overseas in Burkina Faso (formerly known as Upper Volta in West Africa) and in Israel and she served as a Governess for the children of the U.S. Ambassador (and his wife) to Botswana. Ms. Shannon MacDonald is most inspired by the saying: “Get busy living or get busy dying” from her most favorite movie of hope – The Shawshank Redemption. New Traffic Signs! Students: Please take advantage of the new safe crossing signs that were installed this past weekend. Each sign has a push button to press when you are going to cross the street. Contact Coach Christensen for more details SCI://TECH Exposition Volunteers Needed SCI://TECH volunteers are needed support a variety of STEM events from January 23, 2015, through February 14, 2015. While volunteers are needed for all 14 SCI://TECH events, the greatest volunteer need is for science fair judges on Friday, January 30, 2015. While a scientific background may be helpful, it is not a necessity. If you are a novice or science is not your expertise, use your critical thinking skills to judge Junior High projects. To learn more, please visit the website at: www.efta-us.org/volunteer. It is a great opportunity to interact with and support local students. Please join Education for Tomorrow Alliance (EfTA) in encouraging bright minds. For more information please contact Monica Bomkamp Enia at: [email protected] or 936-273-7087. The 25th Annual SCI://TECH Exposition, themed Igniting Inspiration for a Generation, is a partnership between EfTA and area schools, and includes nearly 5,000 students engaging in STEM events with the support of hundreds of volunteers.
