Steve Elkins has provided all the information from the different clubs regarding their Mammoth trips so pick the dates that work for you and go play on the mountain. We also have carpooling hook up with your club member, this is a great way to keep in touch with members and get outdoors. Your programs chair is hard at work planning a lot of activities; please remember to print the calendar so you don’t miss out. There is no way I can list everything that is going on. Our next general meeting is February 4th at the Marina City Club. We will continue to have meetings every other month. So to recap we will have meetings every even month and newsletters every odd month. The Annual Ski Trip is to Taos, New Mexico from March 14-21, 2015. Please look at the flyer in the newsletter and sign up today. This trip will sell out fast as not only can you ski but you can look around the towns and truly be a tourist seeing the sites. The Annual Election meeting will be April 1, 2015 this year due to the Club Annual trip will fall over the normal date we would have our vote. So please mark your calendar and think about becoming a Board member. It’s a great way to keep active in our club. As you know our club is made up of volunteers, remember that without you this club cannot grow. Please take time to help your club continue to be a source of activity, fun and exciting events. As we live our life we continue to make memories, let’s keep making the best memories we can. Please feel free to contact me or e-mail any suggestions you have. TH E SINGLE SKIER 5 J A N U A R Y- FE B R U A R Y 2 0 1 5 Toys for Tots Night with the Marines by Linda Mero Single Ski Club hosted its annual Toys for Tots night on December 3rd at our meeting at the Marina City Club. As always, it was a well attended event and 2 Marine sergeants joined us for dinner and to gather the toys and monetary gifts our membership donated. Singles donated $410 from the Club treasury that Becky Schreiber used to purchase toys and games to start things off. Then, as people came into the meeting they brought either an unwrapped new toy worth $20 or a monetary gift of $20 or more. This year, those monetary gifts amounted to $345. So, in addition to the toys brought in that night, SSC contributed $755 in gifts to underprivileged children in the Los Angeles area. Since we did not have our usual full-blown Holiday Party this year, SSC gave each attendee a ticket for a free drink and an assortment of yummy desserts was served at the end of the meeting. Thanks to all who contributed to this event, and thank you, Becky, for playing Santa this year! Pre-Season Kick-off Party & Bylaws Vote by Linda Mero Then dinner. We had lasagna with all the fixings and everyone ate their fill. It didn’t stop anyone, though, from lining up again for Wags’ wonderful homemade desserts. During dinner Sharon Schneider and I counted the ballots addressing the proposed changes in the SSC Bylaws, which were designed to bring the Club up to date and make it easier to run. They passed unanimously. I want to thank the Party Committee for all their help in organizing the food for the party: BJ for the great salads, Uta for the bread and running around and help with planning and Wags for all the appetizers and fabulous desserts! I also want to thank Sharon who, with me reviewed the Bylaws and proposed the changes that were made. Thank you all! The Pre-Season Party was held this year at my house. Mother Nature cooperated with a perfect day and we had a great turnout. Everyone enjoyed socializing with their regular buddies and catching up with some we don’t see as regularly. After an afternoon of appetizers and drinks Laura Priess told us all about the upcoming Rokka Race season and the two opportunities everyone will have to go to Mammoth for Ski and Race Camp this winter. Race fees will be paid by the Club for SSC racers. Uta Buschor talked to us about our annual trip this year. We will be going to Taos and Santa Fe. If you haven’t signed up yet you had better contact Uta right away to put your name on the list. Paula Correia talked to us about the upcoming Toys for Tots meeting and the Holiday Potluck to be held at Charlie Repp’s home. With a base area elevation of 10,350 feet, Ski Santa Fe is among the highest ski areas in the continental United States. The Millennium Triple Chairlift will take snow sport enthusiasts to a new height of 12,075 feet and some of the southwest's finest skiing. The vistas atop Ski Santa Fe are unsurpassed and act as the gateway for thrills including steep bump runs, powder filled chutes, gladed tree-skiing, and plenty of groomers. TAOS - Located in the Sangre de Cristo Mountain range in New Mexico, the “big snow basin north of Wheeler Peak in La Cal Basin” became the home of Taos Ski Valley in 1954. Fueled by Ernie Blake’s desire to have a ski resort of his own, Ernie and Rhoda Blake lived in an 11-foot camper in the base area and began to build the worldclass ski resort. Today, from the top of Kachina Peak at 12,481 feet (3804 meters), skiers and riders can access steep chutes, big bumps, cornices, and glades. For the less adventurous, Taos Ski Valley offers skiers and riders of every ability level perfectly maintained groomers to carve on. Offering 1,294 acres of accessible terrain, and 305 inches of snow annually, skiers and snowboarders will find Taos Ski Valley’s rugged, authentic terrain a great place to play.
