News from the 7th grade Language Arts Dept.
Seventh grade world language students will be off to a busy start after the holiday break! First up will be a free choice
project where Spanish students can showcase their knowledge of Chile, family, homes, and chores. French students
will produce a similar project on the topic of pastime activities, weather, and making and accepting invitations. Then
it's time to get ready for the midterm exam before moving on to learning about everyone's favorite topic: food!
Bonne année! ¡Prospero año nuevo!
The Sedgwick coat drive was a huge success!
The Sedgwick Student Council and Zeke McDonough, chairperson of the coat drive . Would like to thank you

2015 Standardized Testing Schedule at Sedgwick Middle School
Below is important information regarding standardized testing dates and how to access further information about the tests
Sedgwick students will be taking this year. Please be aware of these dates when scheduling vacation and appointments for your
child.
January 30, 2015: NAEP test administered to 90 randomly selected 8 th grade students
March 17, 2015: CMT Science test administered to all 8 th grade students
April 20 – May 15, 2015: SBAC test administered to all students
NAEP
The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) is commonly referred to as the Nation’s Report Card because it tells us
how students across the country, not just one particular school or state, are doing. The test has been around since 1969 and
provides valuable data regarding student progress. NAEP tests small samples of students. Sedgwick was selected to participate
because our demographics represent the State as a whole. NAEP’s student selection process is unrelated to any demographic
characteristics. Ninety 8th grade Sedgwick students will be selected to participate and parents will be informed by mail. Each
student will be randomly assigned one subject area test: math, science or reading. NAEP does not report individual scores or
school results, but we will play an important role in measuring student achievement nationally.
More information can be found on the National Center for Education Statistics website: http://nces.ed.gov/nationsreportcard/
CMT Science
The Connecticut Mastery Test (CMT) science assessment measures what Connecticut students have learned over several years
about core science concepts and about the scientific process. The assessment includes questions related to concepts in life
science, physical science and earth science. All eighth grade students will take this test. Individual test results will be mailed
home in the summer. We continue to use this CMT subtest because the SBAC test does not assess science.
More information can be found on the CT State Department of Education website: http://www.csde.state.ct.us/public/csde/
cedar/assessment/cmt/science_handbook.htm
SBAC—Literacy and Mathematics
This will be the first year for full implementation of CT’s new state testing platform, Smarter Balanced Assessments (SBAC)
aligned to the Connecticut State Standards in English language arts/literacy and mathematics. All Sedgwick students will take
this computer based adaptive test that goes beyond multiple-choice questions to include technology enhanced items and performance tasks that allow students to demonstrate critical thinking and problem solving skills. Individual student results will be
provided to parents.
More information can be found on the CT State Department of Education website: http://www.sde.ct.gov/sde/cwp/view.asp?
a=2748&q=334488 or on the Smarter Balanced website at www.smarterbalanced.org.
Testing Coordinator at Sedgwick Middle School is Mrs. Sue Henneberry, Assistant Principal.
News from the Nurse’s Office
As some of you may already have heard, Angela Colossale, the part time nurse at Sedgwick, and accepted the full time school nursing position at Morley Elementary School. While she will be missed,
Morley is very lucky to be getting a wonderful nurse!
Fortunately for Sedgwick (and for me), we will not be without a part time nurse. Please join me in welcoming Carolyn (Carrie) Anderson to the Sedgwick community.
6th GRADE PARENTS
Prior to the holiday break, letters were sent to parents of 6th graders who do not have the CT
State mandated physicals and immunizations required for entry to 7th grade, on file in the
health room. We have mailed these letters now to give parents plenty of time to obtain the
needed items. If you have any questions regarding these requirements or believe you have received this letter in error, please contact us.
If you have not already done so, please check out the Sedgwick Nurse Blog. It can be found on the
Sedgwick home page under Departments/Support Services or you can go to the blog directly by following the link http://blog.whps.org/Sedgwicknurse/
This blog is where you can find needed forms, school health policies and general health information
related to teens.
Please feel free to let us know if you would like to see additional information or topics accessible
through the blog!
Please feel free to contact us at any time if you have concerns regarding your child’s health.
