From the Pastor
Tomorrow, February 2nd, the secular world celebrates Groundhog Day, when we give weather credence to a large rodent who may or may not see his/her shadow. In fact, it is a far more significant day for us Catholics. February 2nd is the Feast of the Presentation of the Child Jesus in the Temple, also known as Candlemas Day. On this day we com‐
memorate the obedience and humility of the Holy Family, who faithfully observed the law of Moses and presented their first born son, Jesus, to the Lord and offered the gift of two turtle doves in gratitude for the gift of their son. While they were there in the Temple in Jerusalem, two people came upon the young family and spoke prophetically of what they saw. Simeon, an elderly man of prayer, had been promised by God that he would not die until he saw the Messiah. Moved by the Holy Spirit, he comes upon the Holy Family making their offering and im‐
mediately recognizes the child Jesus as the promised Messiah, the Light of the World. Likewise Anna, a widow of great prayer and faith, also recognizes the true identity of the child and proclaims his praises in the Temple. Since both of them speak of Jesus as the Light of the World, this is the day on which the Church has traditionally blessed all of the candles that will be used in our Church services and litur‐
gies during the coming year. That is why the old name for this Feast day is Candlemas. If you don’t have blessed candles in your home, this Feast is a good reminder of the importance of having these sacramentals in your home. Sacramentals are blessed objects that lead us to a deeper appreciation of the sacred dimension of life. Holy Water, a crucifix, a statue or image of one of the saints, Blessed Palm, a Miraculous Medal, a scapula: these are all sacramentals—they should be blessed and dis‐
played with reverence in our homes or worn on our person to remind us of the sacred dimension of life. Blessed candles may be used during prayer and should always be lit when communion is brought into your home to someone who is sick or dying. These candles would ordinarily be blessed on Candle‐
mas Day. The next day we use two of these candles, held in the form of a cross, to bless our throats on the Feast of St Blaise, the patron saint of illnesses of the throat. Throats will be blessed at all of the morning Masses on Tuesday, February 3rd at 7 and at 9 AM. As you all know, the Bishop has asked me to assume new responsibilities in June, when I will be‐
come the Vicar for Senior Priests. I am humbled by the Bishop’s confidence in me and happy to be able to care for our senior priests who have given their entire lives to the service of the Church. There is a process to the appointment of a new pastor. I have given the Director of Priest Personnel, Msgr Peter Pflomm, my report on the parish and the needs of Our Lady of Mercy. In addition I had to give Msgr Pflomm the names of at least 16 people from different ministry groups in the parish who have been asked to write about what they feel the needs of the parish are. But to make a good decision on a new pastor, Monsignor Pflomm will be hosting an open meeting here in the parish. Monsignor McNamara who is the episcopal vicar, or the Bishop’s representative, here in the Central Vicariate (the 34 parishes along the Nassau‐Suffolk border) and Father John Derasmo, the pastor of St James in Seaford is our Dean, or the coordinator for the 14 parishes of the Hicksville Deanery, which goes along the center of the island from Carle Place to Farmingdale. These three men, Msgr Pflomm, Msgr McNamara, and Fa‐
ther Derasmo will moderate a kind of Town Hall open meeting here in the parish to give as many peo‐
ple as possible the opportunity to give their input into the process of choosing a new pastor. Your in‐
put is given to the Priest Personnel Board as the consider the candidate who have applied to come to Our Lady of Mercy and the input will be given to the new pastor to help him become acclimated to the needs of the parish. I invite you all to participate: your input is very important and I can tell you that the information was very helpful to me when I arrived in Our Lady of Mercy four years ago. Please give your new pastor the same assistance and advice. Please see page 20 of this bulletin for all the informa‐
tion. God bless, Monsignor Thom Our Lady of Mercy, Pray for us

On Stewardship
I should like you to be free of anxieties… I am telling you this for your own bene‐
fit, not to impose a restraint on you, but for the sake of propriety and adherence to the Lord without distraction. ‐Corinthians 7: 32 Make the commitment! Belong More Deeply
To Christ and His Church—
our Church; “If today you hear His voice, harden not your hearts. Let
us come into His presence with thanksgiving; let us joyfully
sing psalms to Him.” —Psalm 95: 1-2
Last week the Gospel spoke of being fishers of men, and
that is a pretty straightforward message. But if you were
listening to St Paul, he was telling the Corinthians to behave differently—those rejoicing as not rejoicing, those
weeping as not weeping, those having wives as not having
wives. Hmmm… that doesn’t seem to fit (I refer you back
to the not rejoicing part, gentlemen). This week Paul continues, explaining that as married people—men and
women— we are concerned with our spouse and our family first and God may
take a back seat. Those who are without a spouse have fewer distractions, he
says, to take them away from the work of the Lord. Paul reminds us that we are
all called as disciples—men and women, married and unmarried.
Stewardship
Living
Stewardship—A Call To Discipleship
This can be a difficulty for us: to understand that God is so important in our
lives that He should always come first. When it comes to carrying that out, to
becoming the disciples and stewards that Jesus calls us to be, we may not be
able to get past the fact that we have everyday things to attend to. If we trust in
God, and can commit to Him, we will find that our other relationships and
commitments will fall into place. We will see that those things that are most
important are served by our best stewardship attitude.
Marriage is a sacrament, as is Holy Orders. We are all called, in different ways
but not to a different end. We are capable of doing great things if we allow our
hearts to be open and allow our Lord to work through us. We need to trust in
Him.
~Contact us at [email protected] for more on Stewardship!
The Sacrament of Marriage is a Discipleship
St Paul explained that all are called to be disciples. He understood that worldly matters could be a distraction in remaining faithful to God’s work. Remember to act as Christ
did: respect your spouse, treat your children as holy. Think
always, what would Jesus want me to do or say? When you
put Christ first, you honor your family and your God.

NEW EXPERIMENTAL ADULT STEM CELL TREATMENT
HELPS THOSE WITH MS
There maybe new hope for the millions of patients worldwide that suffer from multiple sclerosis, better known as
MS. MS is a debilitating and progressive disease where a patient’s own immune system attacks the protective
covering around the cells of the nervous system. This causes a wide range of varying and unpredictable symptoms including fatigue, decreased mobility, and visual disturbances.
There is no cure for MS. Often patients are put on drugs that suppress the immune system to try and slow progression of the disease.
Researchers have published a study of a handful of MS patients in the Journal of the American Medical Association Neurology that indicates immunosuppressive drugs in combination with an adult stem cell transplant may
significantly improve the treatment. These stem cells came from the patient’s own body, and in combination with
high-dose immunosuppressive therapy, the majority of the 24 patients in the study experienced benefits.
CBSNews has the details:
The researchers found that nearly 79 percent of the patients who underwent the procedure sustained full neurologic function for the three years following the treatment and symptoms of their disease
did not progress. Additional, patients in that time period did not develop any new lesions
related to their disease.
More than 90 percent of patients did not experience disease progression, while 86 percent
did not have any periods of relapse. Though a small number of patients did have side effects from the immunosuppressive drugs, they were no different than the side effects typically experienced by MS patients taking the drugs who haven’t undergone stem cell therapy. Longer follow-up is
needed to determine the durability of the response. Careful comparison of the results of this investigation and
other ongoing studies will be needed to identify the best approaches for high-dose immunosuppressive therapies
for MS and plan the next clinical studies.”
This study is only three years into the five year trial period, but this is potentially good news for those diagnosed
with MS. Adult stem cell transplants maybe particularly helpful for those who do not respond to normal drug
therapies. More research is needed since adult stem cell transplants for the treatment of MS in not currently approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). If this small study can be replicated, adult stem cells maybe
on their way to helping even more patients that suffer from debilitating disease.

PRAYER FOR THOSE SERVING OUR
COUNTRY THROUGHOUT THE WORLD
As we live daily enjoying the freedom of this country, many
loved ones are giving themselves with unselfish love in places
of perilous action. Lord, hold in your loving hands our troops
and all those who try to respond to the needs of the less fortunate throughout the world. Bless them and their families for
the unselfish acts they perform as they attempt to alleviate
many global concerns. We ask this in the name of Jesus, our
Lord and Savior. AMEN.
Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time
In the Gospel today we read that because Jesus
spoke with authority his reputation spread throughout
the surrounding region of Galilee. As his disciples, we can also
speak with authority when we put our faith into actions by helping the poor and suffering.
Have you considered answering the call to serve the
poor by joining the Society of St. Vincent de Paul?
Our Lady of Mercy school would like to
Thank the Intindoli Family for their generous donation of a wheelchair.
At just $25.00 per ticket, the Super Bonanza is the perfect gift. We will

Arbor Day or just because you care!
We will also have them available after Mass and at the Rectory Office
During regular business hours.

UPDATE ON MSGR BOESEL As many of you know Monsignor Boesel was taken to St Joseph’s Hospital just before the Christmas holi‐
days. He was there in the hospital being treated for a severe respiratory infection. After his recovery, his physical condition was considerably weakened and he was transferred to Maria Regina Rehabilitation and Long Term Care Facility for rehab, physical therapy, and evaluation. Over the last several months, Monsignor has been becoming more frail physically and, unfortunately, also cognitively. On December 8 we were so happy to have him home with us to celebrate his 86th birthday and we were blessed with two wonderful aides who were here to care for Monsignor seven days a week. However, his condition has changed to the point where Monsignor now needs full time skilled nursing care. Therefore his family has made the decision for Monsignor to remain at Maria Regina as a permanent resident. He is there with our beloved Sister Joanne, who is also a resident at Maria Regina, a wonderful facility run by the Sisters of St Joseph on the grounds of their motherhouse in Brentwood, LI. Maria Regina is very close to Monsignor ‘s family home in Commack and he is doing well and is very happy there. We were blessed to have Monsignor with us in Our Lady of Mercy for 40 years, since July of 1974 when he arrived as our pastor. All of us priests who have lived with him or worked with him over the years have been blessed by his priestly example. His enthusiasm for ministry and his love for the Church. Please keep Monsignor in your prayers. He will be able to have visitors and to receive mail at Maria Regina, 1725 Brentwood Road, Brentwood NY 11717. He will be missed and will always be greatly loved by us all. I know he will be praying for us. Our Lady of Mercy, Pray for us
