A program conducted nationally by the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, a not-for-profit arts organization.
The Alliance for Young Artists & Writers
The Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, a not-for-profit organization, was formed in 1944 to build
a network of support for aspiring young American artists and writers through the distinguished
Scholastic Art & Writing Awards.
The Alliance for Young Artists and Writers celebrates the critical role of creative development
over the course of a student’s education. The Alliance broadly encourages artistic growth by
providing inspiration for the next generation of artists and writers, a place for exploration and
experimentation, a vehicle for recognition and scholarships, and entrée into the larger arts
community.
Jury Procedure, Regional
Students submit artwork in a variety of categories including architecture, comic art, ceramics & glass, digital art,
product design, drawing, fashion, film & animation, jewelry, mixed media, painting, photography, printmaking,
sculpture, video games, and art portfolio.
Before arriving, the six jurors are provided with literature to familiarize them with the history and goals of The
Scholastic Art Awards program. Entries are classified according to media, and artworks by students in grades 9­– 12
are judged separately from those submitted from grades 7 – 8. Digital images of these artworks will be sent for
consideration in the national awards jury process. National award-winning artworks are shipped to New York for the
national exhibition.
The jurors invariably favor originality, good craftsmanship, successful design, and artistic voice. Gold Key and Silver
Key artworks are installed in the Virginia Thompson Graves and the Lula E. Rackley Galleries, Case Art Building, on the
Barton College campus. Awardees and their families, teachers, and principals attend the Regional Awards Ceremony
on Sunday, February 1st in Wilson Gymnasium (on the College campus).
Regional Honorable Mention winners receive certificates and their artwork is documented on the web site’s online
gallery at www.barton.edu.
From the Gold Key artworks, the jury selects five American Vision Award Nominees (Best of Show), The North Carolina
Art Education Association Award, The Wilson Times Award, the Governor’s Student Achievement Award, the Jurors’
Choice Portfolio Award, the Emerging Vision Award, the Vollis Simpson Whirligig Park Recycled Materials Award, and
the Edward C. Brown Award.
Speaker
Susan W. Kluttz, on January 5, 2013, took the oath of office,
becoming the eighth Secretary of the Department of Cultural
Resources. She brought to the position keen interests in historic
preservation and the arts, along with commitments to bolster
economic development and education.
Secretary Kluttz brings a wealth of leadership experience to the
Department. From 1997 until 2011, she was Mayor of Salisbury,
after years of volunteer work in many areas, including serving
as president of the Rowan Arts Council and board member of
the Waterworks Visual Arts Center. She had also been personally
involved in Salisbury’s historic preservation and downtown revitalization for over 30 years. As Mayor, she oversaw initiatives
that developed the city’s cultural arts plan, reorganized the Arts
Council, and created a master tourism plan.
A graduate of University of North Carolina at Greensboro, Secretary Kluttz has served on her alma mater’s board
of visitors. She was a trustee of Rowan-Cabarrus Community College, was honored with an endowed scholarship
in her name at Catawba College, and was awarded an honorary doctorate from Livingstone College.
Secretary Kluttz is married to District Court Judge William C. Kluttz, Jr. Their family includes son Commander William C. Kluttz III and wife MacLean Clinard Kluttz of Norfolk, Virginia; daughter Susan Kluttz Smith and husband
William H. Smith of Greensboro, and grandson William C. Kluttz, IV.

The Scholastic Art Awards, INC.
The Scholastic Art Awards, Inc., with the cooperation of civic-minded sponsors, is conducting for the 91th year a visual art awards program for middle and high
school students. All 50 states participate in this program, the most respected and prestigious of its kind in our country.
The Awards have encouraged more than 12 million student participants, recognized more than two million young artists and writers, and distributed more
than $30 million in awards and scholarships. Local and national exhibitions and annual catalogs serve as a record of student achievement since the late 1920s,
chronicling early work from some of our nation’s most accomplished artists and writers including Richard Avedon, Truman Capote, Frances Farmer, Joyce
Maynard, Joyce Carol Oates, Sylvia Plath, Robert Redford, and Andy Warhol.
The Scholastic Art Awards program aims to encourage student achievement, to recognize our fine art teachers, and to emphasize the importance of the visual
arts in the school curriculum. North Carolina, with a rich tradition as the State of the Arts, has three regional districts. The Eastern/Central regional district
includes 62 counties from Winston-Salem to the Coast. Barton College has hosted The Awards since 1979. Students from our Eastern/Central North Carolina
region create strong, innovative, original art – a reflection on the talent of our region’s young artists and the high quality of instruction by our art teachers.
Across the nation, about 250,000 entries are received each year on the regional level. Of these entries, approximately 25,000 are designated as Gold Key Finalists.
The national exhibition will include about 500 winning entries. In addition to this honor, many students are offered college scholarships. The extra teacher effort
that The Scholastic Art Awards program demands is considerable, and we commend our regional teachers for their dedication and professionalism.

Edward C. Brown Award
During Edward C. Brown 37-year tenure at Barton, he served
the College in a number of roles including Professor of Art,
Ch air of the Art Department, and Director of the Barton Art
Galleries. Brown earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the
University of Texas in Austin and a Master of Fine Arts degree
from Columbia University in New York. Ed Brown initiated the
idea for Barton College to become the regional sponsor for
The Scholastic Art Awards, and Brown served as its director
for 18 years. In appreciation of his leadership and service, The
Scholastic Art Awards Teacher Advisory Committee initiated the
annual Edward C. Brown Award.

Jill Eberle, who was raised in a beach town in southern Connecticut, began modeling as a teenager for noted artist
and teacher Robert Brackman. Lingering in the studio after classes, she became enamored with the oily smell and
process of painting. However, college led her to Ithaca, N.Y., and in a different artistic direction: her initial training
was in set design and scene painting for theatre. Like many others on a journey in the arts, Eberle has engaged
in a remarkable number of occupations, including scene painter, illustrator, prop builder, architectural draftsman,
counselor, and sailmaker. More than a decade of work in New York City was followed by a six-year stint in the
Caribbean living on a sailboat. It was there that she started painting. Eventually returning to the United States and
settling in North Carolina, Eberle began producing art full time. After earning her Master of Fine Arts degree at
East Carolina University, she was hired to teach in the school’s art program. For the past decade, Eberle has taught
drawing, painting, illustration, and artistic anatomy. Eberle also taught at the Penland School of Crafts in Bakersville.
Most recently, she spent the fall 2014 semester in Italy with ECU’s study abroad program. Eberle is a realist painter
who produces figurative narratives, still life paintings, and commissioned portraits. In addition to her fine art work,
she also designs commercial illustrations. While her paintings are created with traditional materials and techniques,
illustrations are painted digitally using Photoshop. Recent exhibits include the Greenhill Center in Greensboro,
the Elder Gallery in Charlotte, High Point’s TAG Gallery, and the Greenville Museum of Art, along with solo shows
mounted at the Imperial Centre in Rocky Mount, and Fine Art at Baxters in New Bern. Eberle maintains a studio in

Born in Belgium, Jerome De Perlinghi began shooting photographs at the age of 15. He was raised
in a family where images were part of daily life. His father worked for a Belgian television network as
a cinematographer, and the teenage photographer benefitted from having a darkroom in the house.
In 1984, De Perlinghi graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Photography. After literally touring
the world, trekking across the globe in 361 days, he started working for several newspapers and
magazines. As a freelance photojournalist, De Perlinghi received his first assignments in the fall of 1989
for Liberation, a trendy, liberal French paper; a publication he still works for some 25 years later. In the
summer of 2000, De Perlinghi moved with his wife Rosa and three children to the United States. They
called Chicago home for nearly 12 years, before moving to Wilson in the spring of 2011 and restoring
an old house in the city’s historic district. De Perlinghi has taught photojournalism classes at Loyola
College in Chicago since 2010, and gives workshops on street photography at Columbia College. He is
the artistic director of Eyes on Main Street, a large outdoor photo festival in Wilson beginning this May.
Born and reared in Nashville, N.C., Pat Montgomery studied at Meredith College for two years before
transferring to Barton College, where she earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Art Education
with a concentration in painting, and later a Bachelor of Science degree in Early Childhood Education.
She spent her 27-year career in the Nash-Rocky Mount Public School System teaching art. She is
currently a freelance artist. Exercising her art skills mostly in acrylic and clay, Montgomery also works
in fabric dying and photography. Her painting revolves mostly around scenes she photographs during
her travels, here and abroad. However, she also creates portraits on a regular basis. Working in an
impressionistic style in her landscapes and still life renderings, she leans more to the realistic with her
portraits. Montgomery has shown her work in many group invitational exhibitions as well as duo and
trio invitationals across eastern North Carolina. She sings, speaks, and does potter’s wheel and painting
demonstrations at conventions, seminars, in churches, and small group settings all over the state on a
regular basis. Since retiring, she is now affiliated with Inner Banks Artisans' Center, an artist cooperative
in Washington, N.C., where she has a small gallery to display her artwork. Her work can be found in
private and corporate collections across the state and along the eastern seaboard, and she is associated
with a number of galleries in eastern North Carolina.
Ollie Wagner was born in California and moved to North Carolina while in the fourth grade. He lived in
Raleigh until his junior year of high school, when he moved to Winston-Salem to attend the University
of North Carolina School of the Arts. Wagner went on to attend Corcoran College of Art and Design,
where he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. He then enrolled in the School of the Museum of Fine
Arts, Boston, where he received a Master of Fine Arts degree and a certificate in Museum Studies.While
in Boston, Wagner curated and co-curated exhibitions for 57 Dell Gallery as well as several student
shows. Wagner has worked at the Smithsonian’s Freer and Sackler Galleries, The Phillips Collection
in Washington, D.C., and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. In 2002, he participated in the Regional
Emerging Artist program at Artspace in Raleigh, and, in 2013, he was selected to participate in the
organization’s Artist-in-Residency program. In addition to exhibiting work in Raleigh, Wagner’s work
has been on view in Washington, D.C., Boston, Providence, and Philadelphia. He has taught art at the
School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and Johnston County Community College in Smithfield. He
is currently an adjunct faculty member at Peace University and Barton College, where he teaches Art
Appreciation and 2-D Design.Wagner’s studio is located at Artspace in Raleigh. His current body of work
is comprised of paintings in acrylic and enamel on a foundation of collaged plywood. The subjects of
his paintings are taken from mid-century textbooks and advertising, and are concerned with various
interpretations of American history and the language of advertising.
With a career spanning 38 years and filled with joy and creativity, Dr. Karen Thorsen continues to stay
active since retiring in 2008.Thorsen earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Art Education from the
Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, N.Y., and pursued a teaching career for four years, before returning to school
herself. She earned a Master of Arts degree at New York University, and later a Ph.D. in Folklore and
Folklife at the University of Pennsylvania. Thorsen began her career as an educator at St. David’s Boys
School, a private elementary school in New York City, and in the summer art program at the Museum
of Modern Art. Teaching has taken her to Summit Senior High School in New Jersey, Milton College
in Wisconsin, Beloit College in Illinois, Rocky Mount Academy, Barton College, Meredith College, and
Ligon Magnet Middle School in Raleigh. While at Pratt, Thorsen became a member of the National Art
Education Association (NAEA) in 1963, and later the North Carolina Art Education Association (NCAEA)
in 1983. She served as a board member of the NCAEA for many years, and has been honored with
NCAEA Teacher of the Year and NAEA Middle Level Teacher of the Year awards.Retirement definitely
hasn’t slowed down Thorsen. She earned a National Board for Professional Teaching Standards
certification and became a scorer for three summers in Arizona and Texas. She continues to substitute
for art classes across all grade levels. She now serves as treasurer for the Fond Doux Foundation, an
organization whose mission is to bring nutrition and wellness to the village of Fond Doux in Haiti.
Thorsen has traveled to Fond Doux four times since 2009 and is raising funds to build a soccer field for
the community.
Leigh Ann Hallberg is an artist living in Winston Salem.Hallberg is an Associate Teaching Professor
of Art at Wake Forest University, where she teaches Drawing. She earned her Master of Fine Arts
degree from the University of Colorado Boulder. An exhibition of her Cereal Bag drawings was recently
included in the Verge Art Fair in New York City. Her drawings and sculptures have been exhibited across
the United States, Italy, and Germany.
Regional Teacher Advisory Committee
The Eastern/Central North Carolina Region of The Scholastic Art Awards Advisory Committee of art teachers reviews regional and
national exhibition procedures, makes suggestions for improvements in the regional program, and nominates a six-member jury
of professionals who view all entries.
