Editor, The Independent:
This year marks the 70th anniversary of the
events that freed civilian and military Allied
POWs from camps in the South Pacific that
had been held under Japanese oppression
from January 1942 until March 3, 1945.
General Douglas MacArthur’s 1st Calvary
Division landed at Lingayen on the island of
Leyte in late January 1945. He had a special job for them. Two squadrons of the 5th
and 8th Cavalry, reinforced by tanks of the
44th Tank Battalion, were sent in a flying
column to Manila. He told the 1st Cavalry
Commander, Major General Verne Mudge
to “go around the Japs” and rescue the civilian internees at the prison camp at Santo
Tomas University and secure Malacanan
Palace. He sent other soldiers to other parts
of Manila to free other POW camps.
I was one of those prisoners along with
my parents, two sisters and my grandfather.
While I was born there, most of the prisoners
were there since January 1942, when Japan
occupied the Philippines, and much of the
South Pacific.
Our Liberation Day was Feb. 3, 1945. At Santo
Tomas, 3,540 civilian POWs and 228 civilian
hostages were freed. At Cabanatuan, 528 military POWs; Bilibid, 800 military/500 civilian
POWs; Los Banos, 2,176 civilian POWs; and
in the city of Manila, over 1 million civilians.
The men who fought so hard and made
the sacrifices to liberate us were 6th Ranger
Battalion, 1st Cavalry Division, 37th Infantry Division, 11th Airborne Division, 44th
Tank Battalion and the Philippine Scouts
and Guerrillas.
We then had to survive the bombing of Manila which lasted until early March.
We mourn untold hundreds of thousands
who died by torture, disease and starvation in
the Bataan Death March, POW camps, in cities and countrysides through this occupation
of the Philippines and South Pacific.
Thank you, Liberators. Thank you for
our lives.

JAMES LEWIS McKAY, 97, of Owosso, passed
away Saturday, Jan. 31, 2015
at Hazel Findlay Country
Manor. Funeral Services
were to be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2015 at Northgate Wesleyan Church with
Pastors Ron Heiler and Cal
Emerson officiating with
burial to follow at Hillcrest
Memorial Gardens.
James was born Jan. 2, 1918 in Sanilac County, the son
of William and Ruth (Lewis) McKay. He graduated from
God’s Bible School in Cincinnati, Ohio, and proudly
served in the United States Army during WWII, serving
in Africa and Italy with the 5th Army. He was an active
member of Northgate Wesleyan Church and in fact was
the general contractor in charge of building that church.
James enjoyed hunting and fishing but mostly he loved
his Lord and was quick to proclaim His love. He married
Wanda Boden in Boulder, Colorado on June 28, 1942; she
has predeceased him.
James came to Owosso in 1953 and began working construction for the noted church builder B.R. Sult and Sons.
Later he and Norm Cox Sr. became partners in construction and eventually as general contractor with his son
Jim they formed McKay Construction. In 1980 he retired
from construction and became hardware manager at Lamphere’s (which had acquired Himburg’s in Westown) for
many years.
James is survived by his daughter Naomi (Rick) Thayer
of Ionia; four sons James (Brenda) McKay, Peter B. (Cindy) McKay both of Owosso, Brian L. (Diane) McKay of
Durand and Rev. Mark A. (Dianne) of Powhatan Pt, Ohio;
14 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; two great-great
grandchildren; six sisters Mildred Porter, Louise Barnard,
Mary Arndt, Martha Arndt, Catherine Jefferies and Marguirete Versnick; two brothers Robert and Don McKay;
many nieces, nephews and other loving family and friends.
He was predeceased by his wife Wanda P. McKay, granddaughter Amy Sue and three brothers.
Memorial contributions are suggested to Northgate Wesleyan Church.

SNOW PILED in the middle of Washington Street
was the norm for Monday after Sunday’s snows, as well
as in other downtown Owosso streets. This was the view
Monday afternoon.
In recent years, City Manager Don Crawford, who

of the city’s snow removal in the downtown as well as
residential areas after snowstorms. However, crews were
cleaning up after the storm during the early morning
hours of Monday to assure traffic could use downtown
