(Courtesy Photo) Editor, The Independent: This year marks the 70th anniversary of the events that freed civilian and military Allied POWs from camps in the South Pacific that had been held under Japanese oppression from January 1942 until March 3, 1945. General Douglas MacArthur’s 1st Calvary Division landed at Lingayen on the island of Leyte in late January 1945. He had a special job for them. Two squadrons of the 5th and 8th Cavalry, reinforced by tanks of the 44th Tank Battalion, were sent in a flying column to Manila. He told the 1st Cavalry Commander, Major General Verne Mudge to “go around the Japs” and rescue the civilian internees at the prison camp at Santo Tomas University and secure Malacanan Palace. He sent other soldiers to other parts of Manila to free other POW camps. I was one of those prisoners along with my parents, two sisters and my grandfather. While I was born there, most of the prisoners were there since January 1942, when Japan occupied the Philippines, and much of the South Pacific. Our Liberation Day was Feb. 3, 1945. At Santo Tomas, 3,540 civilian POWs and 228 civilian hostages were freed. At Cabanatuan, 528 military POWs; Bilibid, 800 military/500 civilian POWs; Los Banos, 2,176 civilian POWs; and in the city of Manila, over 1 million civilians. The men who fought so hard and made the sacrifices to liberate us were 6th Ranger Battalion, 1st Cavalry Division, 37th Infantry Division, 11th Airborne Division, 44th Tank Battalion and the Philippine Scouts and Guerrillas. We then had to survive the bombing of Manila which lasted until early March. We mourn untold hundreds of thousands who died by torture, disease and starvation in the Bataan Death March, POW camps, in cities and countrysides through this occupation of the Philippines and South Pacific. Thank you, Liberators. Thank you for our lives. Shelah Hockman, Owosso The Independent Newsgroup • 1907 W. James is survived by his daughter Naomi (Rick) Thayer of Ionia; four sons James (Brenda) McKay, Peter B. (Cindy) McKay both of Owosso, Brian L. (Diane) McKay of Durand and Rev. Mark A.
