Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. The overall objective of UNEP's Division of Technology, Industry and Economics (DTIE) is to encourage decision makers in government, local authorities and industry to develop and adopt policies, strategies and practices and technologies that promote sustainable patterns of consumption and production, make efficient use of natural resources, ensure safe management of chemicals and contribute to making trade and environment policies mutually supportive. It promotes the development, use and transfer of policies, technologies, economic instruments, managerial practices and other tools that assist in environmentally sound decision making and the building of corresponding activities. This post is located in UNEP/DTIE in the Paris duty station. The Energy Branch supports developing countries to improve energy efficiency and increase use of renewable energy as part of their effort to achieve low-carbon and climate resilient development pathways. It does so by providing guidance on sound policy, technology and investment choices and thereby assists countries to reduce emissions and drive sustainable development. With its team of experts and a network of partners, it supports the deployment and scaling up of cutting-edge clean energy technologies, and removal of financial and other barriers to renewable energy and energy efficiency. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Under the supervision of the Programme Officer in charge of Gender, the Copenhagen Centre on Energy Efficiency and Branch communications within the Energy Branch, the Junior consultant will support the Energy Branch in two technical areas, namely energy efficiency and gender mainstreaming, so as to achieve the following objectives: Provide support to the Energy Branch to develop, enhance, update, implement and strengthen research and communications efforts in the field of energy efficiency Provide support to the Energy Branch to develop, enhance, update, implement and strengthen research and communications efforts in with regards to mainstreaming gender into energy projects Assist in the development of documents and outreach material as well as the organization of outreach events, supporting UNEP media events and advocacy initiatives on the topics of energy efficiency and gender. Page 1 of 2 To achieve the objectives outlined above, the consultant will undertake the following specific tasks: Undertake research and prepare draft papers for the Global Energy Efficiency Platform and support the platform’s knowledge-sharing events and promotional opportunities. Update and maintain the UNEP Energy contacts database. Collect and develop content for the UNEP Energy Branch and C2E2 website updates Support activities to mainstream gender in UNEP’s Energy Branch and the Division, such as development of training material, development of powerpoint presentations and research on the links between gender and various sub-topics of UNEP’s energy and climate work. Except for a completed bachelor degree and some professional experience demonstrating the ability to adapt to a challenging and dynamic environment, as well as responsibility, maturity and reliability no additional professional experience is needed. Languages: English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in English is required; fluency in French or another United Nations official language is an asset. Preference will be given to equally qualified women candidates.
