Lent
A SEASON OF PREPARATION
Have you ever noticed the majority of the church's worship
calendar moves through the
events of Jesus’ life? The cycle
of Advent, Christmas and
Epiphany then seasons of Lent,
Easter, and Pentecost. They all
closely follow Jesus birth, life,
his ministry, finally his death
and resurrection. This year is
no different, we have been
through Epiphany, the coming
of the wise ones to the Christ
child and the points along the
way that reveal Jesus as the
Christ.
This month Lent begins on
February 18th with Ash
Wednesday. The church will
be invited to observe a Holy
Lent and practice spiritual disciplines of self examination,
repentance,
fasting,
selfdenial, meditation, prayer,
reading and study of scripture. These Lenten disciplines
are not a self-improvement
program, but a call to radical
discipleship that could transform not only ourselves, but
our world.
A Note From Pastor Scott
Dear Members and Friends of Solon UMC,
Ash Wednesday is February 18th and we will begin the journey of
Lent at our Services of Ashes at 7 PM. It will be our congregation’s first
step into the journey.
Lent is a time for us to enter into spiritual disciplines as a community of faith and as individuals. The spiritual disciplines of prayer, meditation and study of scripture, fasting, communal and self-reflection and
more mark the season of Lent. Such disciplines are meant to quench our
thirst for God. And our thirst is great.
It seems that more than ever people are interested in their spiritual life, there is yearning and thirst to know God. There is a sense that
spirituality offers resources for the contemporary world that have been
unfairly neglected. The question is, are folks looking for spiritual practices or a quick fix?
When it comes to beginning a spiritual discipline Lent is as good a
time as any. Further Lent is a season when you don’t have to get everything perfect, it’s OK to make a few mistakes. We need to release our
need to be perfect, just give a spiritual discipline your best effort. It is not
a quick fix, but it is a beginning.
A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step. One step
could be joining a small group, or commit to a spiritual practice of your
choice. Come take a step this season of Lent towards an enlivened spiritual life.
Blessings,
Pastor Scott Keele Kober

A Note from the
Trustees about the
Family Life Center
(FLC)
The Church and Trustees are
asking for financial donations to
help with security for the FLC.
Over Christmas break we had
vandalism at the FLC. We are
currently keeping the building
locked due to these concerns.
You can still use the FLC by
checking out a key from Jenny
Vang (with a $20 deposit) that
is refunded when the key is returned to the Church office. The
trustees would like to place
security cameras in the FLC
building. We need your support
for this project to happen.
Please write “security camera”
on the memo line to direct it to
this account.
Financials
Contributions and tax deductions for 2015
Beginning in 2015, it will be necessary for
us to change the way we treat non-cash
gifts to the church in reporting contributions to donors. By law, non-profit organizations, including churches, cannot provide
a donor with the dollar value of a non-cash
or “in-kind” gift. (These are gifts other than
currency or checks. Examples include desserts donated for a meal, crafts made and
given for sale, and supplies given for use in
the office or kitchen.) In instances where
time and service are donated, no tax deduction is permitted: IRS Publication 526
states, "You cannot deduct the value of
your time or services…” A donor may request that the church acknowledge contributions of time or services, but it will be up
to the donor to decide whether to use such
donations for tax purposes. Donors should
consult an accountant for answers to questions related to tax deductions for contributions.
In 2015, non-cash contributions of goods,
whether or not they are accompanied by a
receipt, will be acknowledged by a letter
that the donor can use to support whatever
tax deduction they choose to include on
their tax return. The letter will describe the
nature of the contribution and the date on
which it was given. It is up to the donor, in
such cases, to determine the monetary
value of the non-cash contribution for tax
purposes. If the donor has a receipt for the
goods donated or for supplies or ingredients used to make the donated goods, the
receipt could be kept with the acknowledgement letter to support the donation as
a tax deduction.
Donations made by mission-trip participants are considered by the IRS to be contributions (and therefore tax deductible)
only if a substantial portion of the trip is
missionary in nature and not vacation or
pleasure. It is up to the donor to determine
the extent to which such contributions are
tax deductible. Donations of nonparticipants on the trip will appear on
statements of contributions. For example, if
the parent of a participating child donates
to the church for the child’s trip, the donation will appear on the parent’s contribution statement.
There are no changes in the way gifts of
cash—currency or checks—are reported on
contribution statements. As long as your
name is on a check or on the envelope in
which currency is placed, your cash gift will
be included on your contribution statement.
If you need further information about contributions of any kind to the Solon United
Methodist Church, please talk with a member of the Finance Committee (Dave Frisbie,
Dave Weetman, Hal Kleinsmith, Penny
Tompkins, or Scott Johanningmeier) our
Office Administrator, Jenny Vang.

THANK YOU
Dear Adopt-A-Family participantsThere are not enough words to express our sincere gratitude and appreciation for your participation in our
Adopt-A-Family program. This year, we
were able to help 22 families (61 kids)
in the Solon community. Without people like you, this program would not
exist.
We wanted to share with you some
observations from the family pick-up:
 Some families could not put into
words how they were feeling.
 Some families expressed their
amazement of this community and
what is done for those in need.
 Some only had tears at the site of
the gifts, blankets, books, and gift
cards we were able to provide to
each family.
It was heartwarming to see the genuine feelings of thankfulness towards
everyone involved in this project.
We are all very grateful for your kindness and generosity. From the bottom
of our hearts, THANK YOU! THANK
YOU! THANK YOU!
With Sincere gratitude:
