WRITE-IN CANDIDATES
Did you realize that your Elections ballot for the General Election on November 4 th has lines for each race for
voters to vote for write-in candidates? In order to vote for a write-in candidate, the voter must fill in the oval next
to the blank line for that race on the ballot and then write in the person’s name being voted for.
Per the Arizona Revised Statutes, only candidates who have filed as an Official Write-In Candidate with the
Elections Office on or before September 25, 2014 are considered as official write-in candidates and they are the
only write-in names that are eligible to receive votes. Also, if the oval is not filled in (darkened) next to the
candidate’s name, that vote will not be counted even if the candidate’s name is clearly written next to it.

This will take you to a series of links in a list. Under the “November 4, 2014 General Election” link is a
list of 2014 Official Write-In Candidates.
Some people fill in the ovals for a write-in candidate and write in a name like “Mickey Mouse” or “None of the
Above”. While it may seem like a good way to register dissatisfaction with the candidates for that race, that vote
will not be counted or even registered as a vote for that particular race. In other words, if you do not vote for a
candidate or an official write-in candidate in that race, it will have the same effect as not voting at all in that race.
The final result will show each of these ineligible votes as an “under-vote”. Under-votes do not impact the
outcome of a race. If, for example, there are 30 votes for a candidate and 600 under-votes in the same race, since
the under-votes do not count, the candidate would still be elected. The public would only be able to tell the
number of persons who didn’t vote for a listed candidate or an official write-in candidate by looking at the
number of under-votes on the final results.

Furthermore, ballots with write-in votes are separated out by the voting machines and must be counted by an
appointed write-in board after the election. The write-in board can only count those votes cast for official write-in
ballots. Other ballots with bogus or unofficial names will simply be ignored for that race, but there is additional
work and cost involved in sorting out those ballots and separating them from the ballots that can be counted for
that race.

¿Se han dado cuenta que su boleta de elecciones para la Elección General del 4 de Noviembre tiene líneas para
cada raza para los votantes para votar por los candidatos por escrito? Para votar por un candidato por escrito, el
votante debe rellenar el óvalo al lado de la línea en blanco para aquella raza en la votación y luego escribir el
nombre de la persona por cual va votar.
Por los estatutos Revisados de Arizona, se consideran sólo los candidatos que se han presentado como un

no elegibles como un “bajo voto”. Bajo votos no afectan el resultado de una raza. Sí, por ejemplo, hay 30 votos
para un candidato y 600 votos bajo votos en la misma raza, ya que los bajo votos no cuentan, el candidato todavía

sería elegido. El público lo haría sólo será capaz de decir el número de personas que no votaron por un candidato
enumerado o un candidato oficial por escrito al ver el número de bajo votos en los resultados finales.
Por otra parte, boletas con votos por escrito se separan por las máquinas de votación y deben ser contados por un
designado por escrito después de las elecciones. La junta de Escrito sólo puede contar los votos emitidos para
boletas oficiales por escrito. Otras boletas con nombres falsos o no oficiales serán ignorados para esa raza, pero
hay trabajo adicional y el costos implicados en solucionar esas boletas y la separación de las boletas que se
pueden contar para esa raza.
