kulanu INDIANAPOLIS HEBREW CONGREGATION ALL of US IHC's mission...sustaining and building a progressive Jewish community through Torah, T'fila, and Tikkun Olam February, 2015 • Shevat/Adar 5775 Rabbi Brett Krichiver CLERGY VOICE VOTE FOR ARZA “It is not your duty to complete the work, neither are you free to desist from it.” Many of us know this verse from Pirkei Avot, the Chapters of our Ancestors, as a song we learned as children (Lo alecha ham’lacha ligmor). The words are often lost amidst a bouncy melody. But that verse contains a powerful comfort for those of us who see our world’s problems as insurmountable. It is easy to feel that there is nothing we can do to help our society move forward. It is difficult not to allow the enormity of war and terrorism to cause us to freeze up and become numb. Our ancestors knew this frustration as well and tried to remind us that we cannot allow apathy and fear to direct our efforts. Instead we must continually respond to the still small voice that compels us to work for change, even in the face of overwhelming odds. For many years we have longed for a democratic State of Israel, and watched with growing weariness as right-wing radical Jews strengthened their power base instead. But today, there is a growing majority who share a strong progressive voice for Israel. Right now, the American Zionist Movement is holding elections to determine US Jewish representation to the World Zionist Congress, which will decide how resources from American Jewish communities are allocated in Israel. In short, the more seats won by the Reform movement in America, the more the Reform movement in Israel will be strengthened. If we believe in justice, equality and democracy for Israel, now is the time to make our voices heard. ARZA, the American Reform Zionists of America, is the Zionist arm of the Reform movement, representing 1.5 million Reform Jews in North America. To be clear, a vote for ARZA is a vote for women’s rights, gender equality, religious equality, and a two-state solution for peace among Jews and Palestinians. It is not necessary to be a member of ARZA to vote. Any Jewish U.S. citizen over the age of 18 can vote. There is nothing more tangible, more concrete you can do today to live your values. Cast your vote and then encourage others to vote. If social activism inspires you, ARZA’s website has tools for informing others about ARZA’s mission through social media, and there are suggestions for additional ways to get more involved with the campaign. When we strengthen ARZA’s voice in the World Zionist Organization, funds from the Jewish National Fund, the Jewish Agency, and the Israeli government flow towards Israeli agencies that advocate for Reform Jewish values throughout Israeli society. In addition to visiting and fundraising, this vote is the most important way to move Israel toward the Jewish homeland we still dream is can become. To vote before the end of April, visit one of these websites: www.reformjews4israel.org OR www.arza.org Bar/Bat Mitzvah.................................................................................2 Calendar...............................................................................................2 Worship................................................................................................2 Chants Encounter.............................................................................3 Library..................................................................................................3 Library Book Club.............................................................................4 Sisterhood...........................................................................................4 Brotherhood.......................................................................................6 Social Justice......................................................................................7 Youth Group.......................................................................................7 Adult Education................................................................................8 Religious School...............................................................................8 Temple Donations............................................................................9 Yahrzeit............................................................................................. 10 FEBRUARY CALENDAR OF EVENTS Sunday, 1 9:00 am & 11:15 am – Religious School 9:15 am – Mitzvah Stitchers 9:30 am – Sundays with the Rabbi 11:00 am – Klezmer Rehearsal 2:00 pm – JIFTY Board Meeting Tuesday, 3 5:30 pm – Social Justice Committee Meeting 6:00 pm – Beginning Hebrew Reading 6:00 pm – The ABCs of Being Jewish Wednesday, 4 9:15 am – Torah Talk with Rabbi Krichiver 6:30 pm – Derech Torah 7:00 pm – Choir Rehearsal Sunday, 8 9:00 am & 11:15 am – Religious School 9:15 am – Mitzvah Stitchers 11:00 am – Klezmer Rehearsal 3:00 pm – Rishonim Event Tuesday, 10 12:00 pm – Jewish Book Club 6:00 pm – Beginning Hebrew Reading 6:00 pm – The ABC’s of Being Jewish Wednesday, 11 9:15 am – Torah Talk with Rabbi Krichiver 6:30 pm – Derech Torah 7:00 pm – Choir Rehearsal Mazel Tov Thursday, 12 5:30 pm – Executive Committee Meeting Sunday, 15 NO Religious School - Winter Break Tuesday, 17 6:00 pm – Beginning Hebrew Reading 6:00 pm – The ABC’s of Being Jewish 6:30 pm – Indy Can Wednesday, 18 9:15 am – Torah Talk with Rabbi Krichiver 6:30 pm – Derech Torah 7:00 pm – Choir Rehearsal Thursday, 19 6:00 pm – IHC Board Meeting Sunday, 22 9:00 am & 11:15 am – Religious School 9:15 am – Mitzvah Stitchers 9:30 am – Grade 2 Parents Meeting Hebrew School Info 11:00 am – Klezmer Rehearsal 2:00 pm – IFTY Board Meeting Tuesday, 24 6:00 pm – Beginning Hebrew Reading 6:00 pm – The ABC’s of Being Jewish Wednesday, 25 6:30 pm – Derech Torah 7:00 pm – Choir Rehearsal We announce with joy the Bar/Bat Mitzvah of… Samantha Rose Mears will be called to the Torah on February 7, 2015. It is the last of the 12 months of the calendar year. According to rabbinic tradition, Moses died on the seventh of Adar. However, the month of Adar is when we celebrate the holiday of Purim—the most joyous feast day in our annual cycle. Of this month, it is said, “When Adar arrives, joy increases.” According to the Sefer Y’tzirah—the Book of Creation (a mystical text)—each month has a corresponding letter of the Hebrew alphabet, a zodiac sign, one of the twelve tribes of Israel, a sense, and a controlling organ/limb of the body. Exploring a few of these opens up our eyes to new elements of the month of Adar as well as the Purim story. 65TH STREET KLEZMORIM ON THE ROAD The letter which relates to Adar is the kuf; the word "kuf" means "monkey." Monkeys often clown around and make people laugh—a fitting activity for the month when joy increases. The shape of the letter resembles a mask on a stick. Wearing costumes, masking one’s identity, also is part of Purim festivities. The masquerade reflects the element of the story whereby Esther is instructed (by Mordecai) not to reveal that she is a Jew. Pisces, the sign of the Zodiac represented by a fish, is assigned to the month of Adar. In Kabbalah, fish swimming in the sea symbolize a concealed reality. The Hebrew word for "fish"—dag—is similar to the word for "worry"—da’ag. On Purim, Esther’s hidden identity, when revealed, changes the worry of potential annihilation into the joy of redemption. Finally, laughter is the sense which is associated with the month of Adar. It is our exuberant laughter as we read of the foibles of Achashveirosh, as we hear once again that good has triumphed over evil that expresses the true joy of Adar. The tradition of the Purimspiel—the play which pokes fun at the ancient story—is a valuable addition to our arsenal of behaviors for a joyous Purim. As Adar begins, may it truly be a month when our joy increases! TEMPLE LIBRARY It’s February and we are in the midst of the annual Religious School-Temple Library sponsored reading incentive program. This year’s theme is based on a very popular movie and encourages wintertime reading; FROZEN??? Read Jewish Books— They’re THAWsome! We hope your children are participating. Many students use this opportunity to earn reading credits for their weekday schools as well as credit toward a Religious School grade pizza party and individual toy and book prizes. Contact the librarian with any questions. WHAT’S NEW One of the larger groupings in the nonfiction section of the library focuses on books highlighting Jewish history. Here is a short tour of some representative titles. Jewish History in 100 Nutshells, by Naomi Pasachoff and Robert J. Littman, covers events in the Jewish world from biblical times to the end of the 20th century. Chapters are brief and easy to read. The Origins of the Inquisition in Fifteenth Century Spain, is B. (Benzion) Netanyahu’s controversial magnum opus on the plight of the conversos and the role of anti-semitism in Spain. A scholar IHC’s klezmer band has gotten its act together and is taking it on the road. Sunday, February 22, the band will be featured at the Strand Theatre in Shelbyville, Indiana. Appearing on the same bill will be violinist Steven Greenman along with Kurt Bjorling, clarinet, and Annette Bjorling, harp. The concert is open to the public and free! The Holocaust, compiled and presented by Jeff Hill, is a primary sourcebook for high school students and adults and contains many notable documents including the Nuremberg laws, Nazi instructions for Kristalnacht, and memoirs from the Warsaw Ghetto. For a personal Holocaust recollection, read Shanghai Refuge: A Memoir of the World War II Jewish Ghetto, written by Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation member Ernest G. Heppner in the early1990s. Ernie died in 2004, so for many of our newer congregants this would be a first opportunity to encounter a fascinating remembrance of what happened to him at age 14 in Breslau, Germany after being expelled from school because he was a Jew. Six Days of War: June 1967 and the Making of the Modern Middle East, is former Israeli Ambassador to the United States Michael B. Oren’s astute and dramatic history of the war and its ramifications. Oren, American-born and educated, served as a paratrooper in the Israel Defense Forces during the 1982 Lebanon War. SISTERHOOD Amy Isaacs, IHC Sisterhood President; [email protected] OUR MISSION To join together in Sisterhood and, guided by the principles of Reform Judaism, to strengthen our congregation, our community and ourselves. MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT Message from the President: At this time, all women of IHC should have received the 2015 Sisterhood dues statement that was mailed in December. I want to thank everyone who has already taken care of their dues for 2015! We have many plans for this New Year and we cannot achieve our goals without your support. If you have not yet sent in your dues I hope that this will be the gentle reminder you need. If you are still deciding if you want to join, here is a recap of the last few months of Sisterhood activities to entice you. Sisterhood has had a very busy past few months. We celebrated Sukkot with our Sisters in the Sukkah event; we published and distributed our new Sisterhood cookbook (which is full of wonderful recipes from Sisterhood members and still available for purchase); we served many pancakes to our Religious School children and families; along with Brotherhood, we hosted a staff appreciation lunch; we offered beautiful furs, purses, and jewelry for our two-day Collectors Closet event where $10,000 was collected from our sales; we had our second annual Hanukkah sale in the Gift Shop for Sisterhood members; we collected gifts for two families in need in our community to help make their holidays just a bit happier; and we collected over 800 books which were distributed at Greenbriar Elementary School the week before the school’s holiday vacation. Each student was able to select one book to take home. That same week we also provided bags of food to more than 90 Greenbriar students, many of whom do not have meals for the weekends. We have been able to receive enough donations to provide food for these families during their fall and winter breaks and will be doing the same in the spring. As you can see, we have so many opportunities for our Sisterhood members to be a part of something. From social activities to social action, and from fun to fundraising: please join us! There are many ways to find your niche in Sisterhood. I want to take a minute to acknowledge everyone who has helped with the Greenbriar Project; your contributions led to a wonderful morning filled with so many smiles: 4 IHC KULANU • FEBRUARY 2015 FEBRUARY BIRTHDAYS Happy Birthday to our Sisterhood members celebrating February birthdays! The Search Committees for both the Associate Rabbi and Director of Life Long Learning have been busy over the holidays. We hope to announce the hiring of a new Associate Rabbi in the next week or so. I want to thank in advance the diligent work of the committee. They interviewed many candidates. Once they knew who they wanted they executed a plan and went out and wowed him. We all should be proud as he had many choices and when it came down to decision time he felt the IHC family was the easy choice. We are welcoming to the congregation, the weekend of Feb 6th-8th, Rabbi Lauren Cohn and her husband Matt. Rabbi Lauren is a candidate for the DLL position.
