TH The third Monday in February, which this year happens to be February 16th, is the statutory holiday we know as Family Day.This holiday was first celebrated in 1990. Alberta was the first and only province in Canada to have a statutory holiday during the month of February, until Saskatchewan also began observing it as recently as 2007. It was originally proclaimed in our province by Lieutenant Governor Helen Hunley on the advice of our then-Premier, the honorable Don Getty. The Premier felt that it was important enough for Albertans to spend time with their families, in the dead of winter, two months after the holiday season, that he should declare a holiday that emphasized family values. We all look forward to this long weekend now and kind of take it for granted. It didn’t even exist that long ago, however, and many would be rather surprised to know how much flack the Premier actually took at the time for this decision. Employers felt that it was a rather unnecessary financial burden to add yet one more statutory holiday to the list. As a result of the fuss this was creating, the public holiday which we call Heritage Day, which typically falls on the first Monday of August every year, was downgraded from a public holiday to a civic holiday. In other words, it is no longer statutory. Workers in different provinces of Canada may actually have to choose one or the other. In Alberta specifically, employers may still choose to observe Heritage Day as a general holiday, in which case the rules governing general holiday pay are to be followed. Now on board for the Family Day long weekend, we have the provinces of Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island. In Manitoba, Nova Less than Perfect Credit? Alberta was the first province in Canada to have a statutory holiday during the month of February Scotia, and P.E.I., it is actually called Louis Riel Day, Nova Scotia Heritage Day, and Islander Day respectively. British Columbia just began observing a Family Day on the second Monday of February, only as recently as 2013, making for a total of 2/3rds of Canadians living in a province which celebrates a February statutory holiday. It also happens to coincide with President’s Day in the U.S. for everyone except for British Columbians, who observe it the week before. In B.C. they had introduced a private member’s bill as far back as 1994, just four years after we started observing the holiday here in Alberta, requesting a Family Day holiday. It failed dismally, however, and it wasn’t until between 2007 and 2011 that there were any renewed efforts on its behalf. Once again, it was opposed not only by the Campbell government, but also by business interests, namely the British Columbia Chamber of Commerce. Finally, in January of 2011, Christy Clark, who was running for the leadership of the Liberal Party at the time, made the issue a part of her platform. When she subsequently became the Premier, the speech from the throne delivered on October 3, 2011, confirmed the first Family Day to be February 18, 2013. Many schools across Canada for years, especially post-secondary schools, had already recognized the importance of taking a mini mid-winter sanity break in February. It was officially called reading week when I attended university, although we students called it skiing week. Whatever you decided to do with it, it was a very welcome thing in the dead of winter to just be able to kind of regroup. You could catch up on some assignments or even just some sleep. Now with the Family Day holiday, also coinciding with these other scholastic breaks, students can run home for a long weekend and a homecooked meal, families can get together, and everyone has something to look forward to during that long monotonous home stretch that seems to go on forever from New Year’s until spring. I don’t have any children in school, but I just found out recently that it’s not just the post secondary institutions. No phone calls please. references—people who know you and your work. Employers usually ask for your references after they’ve interviewed you and formed an opinion about you. They want to contact your references to check what you’ve said about yourself and see if you’re a good fit for the job and the organization. Employers use references in different ways: • Some employers won’t interview you until they’ve checked your references. • Some employers prefer not to accept references from out of province or out of the country. • Some employers hire new staff on probation because they don’t trust references, expecting them to exaggerate the positives. 516 - 13 St. North, Lethbridge & 1212 - 19A Ave. Coaldale NOW HIRING FULL TIME Front Counter Attendants - $11.89/hr Supervisors - $14.55/hr Email: [email protected] Email: [email protected] When you fill out an application or go to an interview, you won’t know ahead of time how the employer deals with references. Your best approach is to be prepared. Making the most of your situation The following suggestions will help you overcome problem references or lack of available references: Polish your career planning and job search skills! Use other contacts or documents as an acceptable alternative to an employment reference. Material or documents you’ve produced or projects you’ve been involved in can demonstrate your skills and attitudes. Copies of evaluations, letters of recognition, thank-you letters, written comments from customers or clients, and awards can show your value as an employee. Manage your references Offer references only when requested. Instead of listing references on an application, attach a resumé that includes the statement, "References available upon request." Always ask potential references for permission before using their names and tell them when an employer may be contacting them. Ask your references what contact information (home phone or cell phone) you should give to the employer. Coach your references. Share relevant information about the position you’re applying for to help them prepare for the kinds of questions the employer will likely ask. You want what they say about you to help you get the job. When your references have retired, relocated or are otherwise unavailable Larger companies keep human resources files. In this case, employers can talk to human resources staff with access to your file. If your reference has retired or moved to a different company and you know how to reach that person at home, do so. Find out if the retired reference is comfortable with being contacted by phone or email. When you don’t want your current employer to know you’re looking for work Most potential employers are sensitive to this situation—they know you want to keep your job search confidential. If you’re short-listed or have been offered a position and the employer insists on contacting your current employer, ask that you be notified first. This will allow you to talk to your current employer before the reference check is made. When you’ve left a job on bad terms or been fired If you’re on good terms with other former employers, use them as references instead. If you feel you have to include a reference from a job where you were fired or left on bad terms, try these suggestions: • Contact your previous employer and see if you can reach an understanding about what happened. Explain that you know the reasons you were fired.Talk about the steps you’ve taken to change. Ask if they’d be willing, on the basis of your conversation, to provide a reference. • If you’re uncomfortable with the previous approach, is there someone else in the organization you’re on good terms with who would be a reference? • If a potential employer insists on contacting this reference, be honest about the situation.Think of how to describe what happened without blame. References can play an important role in your job search. The suggestions in this tip will help you gather the best references available to you. Strong job search skills will bring you face-to-face with an employer who’s looking for what you have to offer. At that point, your enthusiasm and attitude will go a long way towards emphasizing your potential and making your references work for you. ~alis.alberta.ca Page 10, THE LETHBRIDGE SHOPPER, Week of January 31, 2015 For the Week of January 31 ARIES - Mar 21/Apr 20 Put your vitality and conspicuous nature to good use, Aries.
